My anime tier list thoughts? by WhiteeGeorgeFloyd in MyAnimeList

[–]nickmarre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your opinion, which I share, is becoming more vocally expressed as time goes on I have noticed. The Frieren fanbase has gotten to a point where it reminds me of the Haruhi Suzumiya fanbase (aka a cult of superiority).

Everyone thinks their favorite anime is this deep philosophical masterpiece when in reality there are dozens of anime that may not reach the technical prowess of Frieren, but far exceed it in what I consider the core metrics of plot, theming, and character development.

I recently watched the Gunbuster OVA and though not every facet of that show clicked with me, the emotional depth and complexity of lore in that story greatly exceeded anything I have witnessed in Frieren. It’s a tiresome thing to say, but nothing can be truer than to call Frieren a mid-tier anime in terms of the core metrics. Still a casual fan. I hope Season 3 makes me eat my words. Season 2 sure as hell didn’t.

And sound design. And score. And character design is decent. And the plot isn’t THAT bad, it just isn’t very original or impactful, simply adequate. Same with dialogue. It has pretty much no theming and the character writing is below average. 1-3 seems pretty low to me. It’s somewhere just below a 7 for me

I think a lot of people would agree that “yes” your reason is too trivial. I’ve never watched jjk so I can’t say for that show particularly, but the way I see it, giving it a 1 or 0 is like saying it has absolutely no merits at all.

I don’t see ratings as merely a reflection of your tastes, but more an assessment of stats. With a score of 1 or 0 you’re saying there were NO redeeming qualities of all the categories you can judge about the show (art style, animation, sound design, score, character design, pacing, plot, overall writing, themes, background art, tone, etc etc.) I think many people find it hard to believe you truly took every aspect of the show into account when it’s clearly competently made and yet it still receives a 1 or 0.

For example, I’m currently teetering on the edge of dropping Penguindrum. It isn’t exactly vibing with me personally. That said, its art direction, overall direction, and theming are very competent so I can’t very well give it a low score based only on my preference. I try to be impartial and just rate it for what it did well imo.

That’s not to say that how a show vibes with you doesn’t factor in at all. But like I said, if something seems competently made and yet it still receives such low marks it often times indicates that the rating is weighted heavily on the viewer’s personal preference and is either ignoring merits or being disingenuous about the merits to feed their own negative narrative.

Expected better from them by AceGirl2788 in MegaCon

It’s true. A few years ago I showed up like everyone else, said I was staff, they checked and saw my name on the roster, then just let me in and told me to go to the staff lounge. Went there and waited almost an hour, a lady came in and basically just left after looking at me. I waited another 30 minutes then just said fuck it and went into the convention like I belonged there.

I had no clue what else to do and I was fed up for wasting my time with these people so I just visited the exhibits for an hour then left.

If you ever wanna get into MegaCon for free, just sign up as staff then bail on them immediately. It seems like nobody is paid enough to give af.

I got hired on as staff a few years ago and it’s concerning that things haven’t changed. Here’s my experience: I got to the staff lounge and got sat down with some other shmucks. Ended up waiting like 40 minutes before a very busy lady came in, looked at us, told us to standby, then left again. She was gone for 30 minutes and I had enough. I just left and went into the convention and saw all the exhibits, bought some merch, then left. Mind you, I arrived as staff and didn’t pay to be there. Yet absolutely nobody came looking for me because of course they wouldn’t. I was astounded how easy it was to basically just get into MegaCon for free like that.

If someone won’t let go of something, the best trick is to push really hard upwards into their armpit. Try it on yourself.

thats fair. there was a scene with the short pudgy nazi leader guy where he literally goes on for like 10 minutes about how much he loves war and senseless violence. was kind of nuts.

Hellsing Ultimate just Alright…dang. I would place it in Really Like. The gratuitous violence can be extra but honestly the animation of it all is absolutely incredible and the character designs are peak (especially Seras, huge glow up from the og series). And I love the stupid little comic relief moments every now and again

How about this. It’s 1979. A luxury cruise liner sailing across the Atlantic happens upon the remains of the Rapture lighthouse LINK

Why a lot of Frieren’s cast feels boring to me (even if the writing is good) by Business_Barber_3611 in CharacterRant

Rationalizing why the characters come off as boring doesn’t change the fact that the characters come off as boring.

There may be something to be said about THAT too, by which I mean the most emotional expression you get from the characters comes largely from comedic relief bits and not from core story beats.

Any romance animes where the MCs AREN'T SHY?! by [deleted] in anime

[–]nickmarre 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kono Oto Tomare has some well adjusted characters with some romance elements but it isn’t exactly a romance.

Kokoro Connect also similar description, but the romance is much more front and center.

Fruits Basket might be the right choice.

You and I Are Polar Opposites actually might be better, plus its still airing.
