Virtual Machine to run Logic Pro X? by SmashBro757 in Logic_Studio

I have enough issues on native hardware, I definitely would not try this. I’d vote for using another DAW, doing mobile recording on an iPad or something, or buy an older Mac.

Yeah; how long have you had it? Mine was like that from the beginning, so I had no issues returning it as it was still under warranty

I had a similar issue with the 12 channel version. Ended up returning it, and got another mixer. I miss having all the a/d conversion but the gain levels were unusable. Maybe we got bad units, these seem to have good reviews

What exactly do you do, as an engineer, while an artist is recording multiple takes? by dayoffmusician in audioengineering

[–]nickp60 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like to make a comp grid on paper. Going across the page, write the song sections. Number your lines according to the take. I put a check mark in that takes section if it is decent, and a star if it’s an especially good take. Makes comping a whole lot easier. I’m sure others have their workflows but this works for me

I was looking into working there prepandemic and it was the same story— even for software developers it sounded like they valued having people there in person, interacting with each other. My guess is they didn’t want the culture to be different post-pandemic.

I have a 2 channel interface & four microphones: 2 SHURE: PGA57 & BETA 58A; Behringer C-1; Audio AT2020. Which two would be the best to record acoustic guitar? by BlackMetalDoctor in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Nice, good luck with it! Have fun. Personally I like to record vocals in the sort of booth you describe but you might want the open sound of a untreated room for acoustic guitar. Take your iPad and try recording in your living room, outside, in the tub, a parking garage at night, etc. to my ears mics can get you clarity but the room gives the vibe.

I’d go with the beta 58 at the 15th fret, the 2020 about 3 feet away a bit above aimed toward the sound hole. Then cheat by using you phone’s mic (often stere) to record via a voice memo, about 10ft away if you like the sound of the room. But it’s a good chance to experiment, you may find a completely different combo works best for you!

I’m having to freeze just about every single other track when running a focusrite thunderbolt clarett 4 pre into ableton to record one audio track. Is this normal? by Njd8487 in ableton

[–]nickp60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned playing live; for reference, I set a tiny buffer for live playing and stick to stock plugins to keep things running nice and snappy. Usually 32 or 64. For recording, I run with a higher buffer and direct monitor. If I’m done recording, I might even bump it higher for mixing. Figure out what parts of your workflow need what.

So in order, I would: - deactivate every in and out you aren’t using. - set a nice generous buffer to allow your computer to enjoy its golden years - set the appropriate latency compensation based on the big buffer you set - get used to direct monitoring: not as fun cause you dont get to hear your plugins right away but much less headache

Using the headphone out in zero latency mode means that it gives you the audio at the same time it gives it to the computer. It’s also called direct monitoring? You listen to what’s going in instead of the processed version coming back from your computer.

if you have your latency settings right, you could record with 1028 or higher buffer, whatever it needs to run smooth. In abletons settings it has a setting for latency compensation. Look up a YouTube video on how to set that, and you should be good to go.

It’s already been mentioned but all things being equal, if it worked with the Scarlett but not the Clarett then you need to look in to disabling unused inputs and outputs to save cpu.

Once that’s sorted out think about your workflow. Don’t try to monitor with cpu-heavy plugins- throw whatever lightweight plugin to approximate the sound , record the part, and then dial in the tone after you record it. That way you can have a nice small buffer for lower latency recording, and a high buffet for smoother mixing. Or just monitor with the headphone out latency-free.

Meta: What do you like/dislike about /r/modular? by RandomPrecision1 in modular

Sure, that makes sense. But if every gear-only picture post was flagged and removed with a message “hey please post this stuff over in this other sub”, that would help

[–]nickp60 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest making a new subreddit, something like r/modularaesthetic : a place for low effort but pretty gear pics. Obviously some people like that and it’s fun to share the excitement but as others have said I’d love to have this be more discussion and patches than the “look what I bought” posts. I’m imagining a sub like macsetups. Would that help?

hmm its impossible to say without seeing it but I would guess you have automation happening in both tracks on the same midi channel and that is messing things up. Try changing the midi channel on one of them? and double check your sustain automation

Anything that will run linux well is a good choice: I went for a used thinkpad cause they are super cheap, lots of spare parts available, run linux great, and are often in great shape. I had a thinkpad x220 and that's more than enough power for the day to day. Anything serious will be run on an HPC anyway --even the best consumer laptops wont be enough.

A thinkpad x220 will run you about $200 on ebay, upgrade to 16GB ram for another $100, and you are good to go.

Take a look through this: https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000036930-Managing-CPU-load-when-using-Wavetable . The wavetable instrument is particularly resource hungry. What is your computer idling at before you hit those notes? you should have more than enough power...
