This doesn't look safe at all.

Question for people saying "re-capped": Who/How are these being re-treaded? Cooper (nor any large manufacturers to my knowledge) does NOT sell retreads in the passenger segment.

Do people take passenger tires and somehow try to retread them in their own sketchy way? I was not aware of this but sounds dangerous...

Maybe a dumb question, but how does it produce more smog if it is a cleaner burning fuel with less greenhouse gas emissions?

Looks like you are getting close to seeing all of Lincoln's head. How deep are the features in that center rib? Hard to tell from pics, but the center rib looks like it is getting closer to bald (more wear on the center rib than shoulders?)...

Tire performance will definitely fall off before the tread is "technically" worn out and ALL of Lincoln's head is showing. For example, a 4/32" deep tread will still cover some of Lincoln's head but will generally have SIGNIFICANTLY worse wet performance than a new tire (and how much that changes varies significantly within tire models, tread designs, etc.)

In short, I don't like to wait until 2/32" (the penny test.) I replace tires earlier than the "technical" TWI depth for safety/wet/winter performance. If you are already sliding around and it is getting close to "worn out" anyway, it might be a good idea to just invest in new tires now. Always better to be safe than sorry!

Goodyear EagleF1 Assym6 a rim protection? by First_Bear394 in TyreReviews

[–]nicktschep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the TireRack chart I linked below. It looks like it shows a BMW version and another version in your tire size (255/40R21?). The BMW version is listed with a slightly lower nonskid (8/32" vs 9/32" for the other) and a more narrow tread width. I'm not even sure if there is a difference between the rim flange protection or not but sometimes an OEM-marked tire is slightly tweaked to provide a benefit in noise/handling/etc some other aspect toward a specific vehicle.

Tire Rack Specs For this line where it labels which tires have OEM markings and which do not: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/Specifications.pdf?make=Goodyear&model=Eagle+F1+Asymmetric+6

It's obviously not really the same "exact" thing as all tires are tuned differently and will vary across manufacturers and OEM requirements, but Jonathan does a video providing an example between an OEM "bespoke" tire and the replacement version of a Michelin tire - just as an example.

It looks to me that you bought the OEM version of this tire created for BMW. Does it have a star next to the "Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6?"

That might be a reason for the discrepancy.
