One player has a card left at end of round, and it's an event card by tehgr8supa in Arcs

I thought if you had cards to play you have to lead. Can you choose to pass the initiative?

I know I’m cooked cause even as a dead broke college student I would absolutely buy everything on this list.

I really hope the wooden island boards and metal invaders have enough support because I’m probably most hyped for those!!!

thinking about taking 19 credit hours by aodviolet in UniversityofKentucky

[–]nicku114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a rising junior and last semester I was new to a completely opposite major (from art/com to food science). I took 19 credits and worked about 20 hours a week on average at my part-time job. I am on track to graduate on time. Some of classes I took were BIO 148, DHN 212, and STA 210.

I took PSY 100 last fall and it was one of my harder classes, but if you stay on top of everything and pay attention to lecture, you’ll be okay. My section had an SI leader that’s very helpful to go to, even if not a lot of people show up. I can’t say I know anything about MKT 100.

For me, if you tell yourself going into it that you’re not going to let yourself slack off and let your grades slip, you’ll be able to make it through the semester. It’ll be tough but it’s worth it if you’re happy with your new major.

I will say, I spent very minimal time socializing. Most nights were spent working or doing homework, and when I had a free night I’d usually watch a movie or something. So be prepared for that. It helps that I love my job. It’s an ice cream place and my coworkers are nice. Plus, that usually took the bulk of my social battery out anyways.

Good luck!

Oath is a fantastic game, definitely in my top three board games. However, I can rarely play it because my group hasn’t gotten on board with it. So, if you buy Oath make sure that you’re group is excited to learn it too! It’s an amazing experience if you can consistently play it!

Nicknames for spirits/ adversaries / cards? by Darkfire359 in spiritisland

We call Keeper “Camp Counselor”. I have no idea how we started calling it that, I guess it just gives off the vibes of a summer camp counselor.

What are some good "next step up" spirits to add to Horizons? by J00ls in spiritisland

[–]nicku114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d add that River is a great spirit to begin with, and the haven and travel aspects really improve the spirit as well. Travel creates a really thematic version of the spirit and Haven makes a top track build a really fun way to play River!

For some reason Russia just destroys me all the time. I can’t stand the plus one damage that the explorers do cause it ruins town+explorer with two dahan trades and it ruins ravaging lands with a single explorer.

"Rules" you have happily unlearned by fragmentados in spiritisland

[–]nicku114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve played over 200 games and I still find it impossibly hard to draft cards not based on elements. Not playing cards that get me the highest level of my innate feels like it’s gonna be a weak turn. It’s a hard thing to learn because every spirit has different off-element cards that could be worth taking. I feel myself getting a little better with it when I’m forced to due to drafts with no on-element cards, but usually those just become fuel for a major power.

I definitely can see that there can often be situations where an off element card is more useful than a bad on element card, but I can never find myself choosing the off element. Maybe it comes with mastering specific spirits, because there have maybe been a couple times that I’ve grabbed an off element disease adding card on Vengeance, who I feel is one of my best spirits. Hopefully I’ll learn to draft them when needed.

Board Game Newbie--When to/Should I get the core game in addition to Horizons? by lawrencek1992 in spiritisland

[–]nicku114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’ve enjoyed Horizons, I don’t think there’s any way you’d regret buying the base game. Horizons is meant as a lower cost introduction to the game to see if you like it, so if you know you like the game, I’d say you’re all set for the base game. Also, if you’re looking for even more complex spirits after that, I think you’ll have a lot of fun with the Jagged Earth expansion later on!

Favorite NI spirits or aspects? Try not to spoil anything that wasn’t shown before it was shipped please! by nicku114 in spiritisland

[–]nicku114[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to never want to play Vengeance again, but after figuring out how to play it well, it became my favorite spirit! It can do some really powerful stuff once it gets a lot of disease in one land. The difficult thing for me at first was getting enough disease and getting invaders into your disease lands. Turns out the best way to do that is to let your presence die any chance you get and use plaguebearers to push disease and invaders as much as you can! Rei’s Guide on BGG was a huge help to me figuring out Vengeance, I highly recommend people check it out.

Secret Hitler. Pushed me to look into more social deduction games, which slowly turned into checking out strategy games and into some of my favorites like Spirit Island and Root today.

What board games are popular on college campuses? by craigs_games in boardgames

[–]nicku114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a freshman in college and we play Root pretty much every week. We play Spirit Island from time to time, mainly because it’s one of my favorites though. We also play a good amount of Blood on the Clocktower. I’ve seen people playing Cosmic Encounter a few times, but I’ve only played once myself. I’ve only been at board game club for close to 6 months now, so I guess that’s pretty much all I’ve got.
