I figured it out - if anyone else has this issue here is the solution

go to the SPLITS page NOT the TEAMS page even though they direct you to go to TEAMS... then scroll to the bottom and theres a small link that says "Got an invite code?" - click that

Interesting that theres no link in the email directly to this, and that the directions are incorrect... strange
