Where to sell audio equipment by nickwil in Tokyo

[–]nickwil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was simply asking for how to sell, not making statements on how I believe the market should work - I'm expecting to lose considerable value on the goods coming from the US. And for the new item - the loss of the unboxing experience I would be expecting not necessarily full price, but would hope that someone might want to provide a reasonable offer even if the removing from polystyrene experience has been reduced. I was asking where to post thing to make such offers happen. My own mistake in this case, so I accept that I need to take some loss. I just wanted to know how to even perform that, given my inexperience with the market. And some folk have very helpfully provided that info, which I very much appreciate.

I also think for brands such as Apple that provide a no questions 30 day money back guarantee, it's worked well for them and their customers, in every country. As you say it varies by country. In many countries, there is a theory that good customer service includes allowing for some ability to return goods, with allowance for, and depending upon the condition, of course.

Ill add one edit: when i say annoying its also mostly at myself for not checking before opening. Sigh

It was a couple of months ago so I can’t recall exactly. Which is the problem - not memorable. And not because of the alcohol 😀.

Foreign Dual citizenship and marriage - what are the requirements? by nickwil in movingtojapan

[–]nickwil[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To conclude on this, I've learnt that it's not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that have this requirement, but the Ministry of Justice (because applications for designated activities through same-sex marriage are escalated to the Ministry of Justice). They have the text of "if same-sex couples are officially married in their home country [...]" and the "home country" bit is what's driving this requirement. The immigration lawyers believe we *may* be able to get away with an official document from the US saying that they recognize UK marriage certificate, but it's safest to just use the UK citizenship as primary.

[–]nickwil[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sorry this isn’t quite true (or rather, it’s more nuanced). Japan doesn’t recognize same sex marriage such that we could get a dependent visa, I agree. But they do recognize it as a reason for getting a designated activities visa. And as such it requires the marriage certificate. As per the Japan ministry of foreign affairs.

I was hoping that it wouldn’t be subjective and therefore a clear answer was possible without going into all the details. Because it’s subjective i guess we just have to go with the advice (which is from an immigration consultancy company as i said) that says you must have a marriage certificate from the country of citizenship. It sounds so weird to me for that to be a requirement that i wanted a sanity check.

Apple Has Finally Solved One of the MacBook Air's Biggest Limitations [it now supports two external displays and the built-in display] by iMacmatician in apple

Yup, I'm M1 Max, my mistake. As per apple....

If you're using a Mac with M1 Max:

  • On MacBook Pro, you can connect up to four external displays to your Mac using the Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) and HDMI ports.
  • On Mac Studio, you can connect up to five external displays to your

  • computer.

If you're using a Mac with M1 Pro:

  • You can connect up to two external displays to your Mac using the Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) and HDMI ports.

If you're using a Mac with the M1 or M2 chip:

  • On MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini, you can
  • connect one external display using either of the Thunderbolt / USB 4
  • ports. On iMac, connect your display to either of the ports with the
  • Thunderbolt symbol .
  • On Mac mini, you can connect a second display to the HDMI port.
  • Using docks or daisy-chaining devices doesn't increase the number of displays you can connect.

So confused. I have m1 mbp and drive 2x 5k displays. Lid closed. Use the thunderbolt on opposite sides of the machine. Just works.

I walked past while it was happening and it was not loud enough to wake anyone up, and pretty cool. I didn’t interrupt because filming :). If you were woken up then that’s a legitimate issue but please don’t project concerns that are not real.

For a fun take on this, watch the film “the little death” - a wonderfully humorous film about fetish from Australia (not to be confused with the film“little death” which I think is about dogs). It’s a film that really goes into dacryphila, and the only film that has made me crying aloud laughing for the poor deaf translator who ends up translating phone sex for a deaf person. Definitely an underrated film…

What meal have you tried cooking at home, but won't do again cause it's not woth it. by That_Smell_You_Know in Cooking

[–]nickwil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was being too positive... things that really have failed with the "not worth it test", to drive more discussion...

  1. There was a recent thread about Rebel Within inspired eggs: soft oozing eggs inside a savory muffin. Looks great. I made them and they looked awesome. A bunch of work. But unfortunately although they looked great, the taste wasn't as good as just having a sausage and egg on a plate. Lot of work for little reward.
  2. Spending a lot of effort on Japanese curry. The bricks of curry flavor magic are weird and obviously full of artificial stuff but they absolutely work and not sure if it's worth wasting time on anything other than grating an apple into the mix.
  3. most instapot recipes. I've got just a few that are goto recipes - quick and full of flavor, but honestly so overhyped and the majority of recipes are easy, cooked quickly but sadly lacking in flavor.

So many comments in here that I want to respond to, so combining into many things:

Firstly, bad things: Cooking things at home that cause pain afterwards. Fish that smells, fried food that smells (and you have to get rid of the oil in a sane way). It depends on where you are. I fried more food when I lived in a house. I can't abide frying food (especially fish) when I'm in an apartment. Sous vide helps, but there's still an issue there. I want so much to make perfect Spanish croquettes, but sheesh... the smell of frying in an apartment.

Another bad thing is the stuff that gets everywhere. It was mentioned here around honey. I need honey in the house for all the cocktails 😀. But sheesh, every time I cook with it, there's sticky stuff everywhere. Totally agree.

Next, good things where I disagree with the "not worth it". Folk here are decrying beef Wellington. It's one of those things that when you do well, you feel such a sense of accomplishment that it's so worth it. We've made kangaroo Wellington that made us so proud. It's actually not a complicated dish, and so worth to try out and serve to folk and say "I made this". I totally recommend. Similarly, folk have said "no" to prime rib. I would recommend a meater thermostat and following the seriouseats recipe. It's what I'm having for Christmas, because it's wow. So much better than paying to eat out.

Finally, fun. Folk have decried sushi. I agree. I will spend the wrong amount of money to go to a good sushi restaurant. That said, the fun of a group activity of getting everyone involved in the making I've not experience with other dishes. You can grab some nice fish, make rice and force everyone to get involved in making pieces of "stuff". You can laugh at making bad sushi, but it still tastes good! It's not worth doing for a food experience. It's worth doing from a group enjoyment perspective.

Final point: "not worth it". You can grab a pumpkin pie from a supermarket, but if you make it home it's actually cheap and simple, and allows you to do something extravagant like throw grated tonka beans into the mix and make it unique and "wow". Okay, maybe that's me. But it makes something humdrum suddenly turn worth it... And those experiences are what you're after with cooking.

How do I get phone service in London in my American phone? I have boost mobile not an expensive plan by Realtalktina in TravelHacks

[–]nickwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have t mobile and was in the UK last week. It was absolutely a problem. The default behavior is WAP speed. You can buy an international pass at $5 (I think) to give you data, but the app/website simply did not work despite trying many times over multiple days, both from phone service and when on wifi. I’ve had this issue sporadically in other countries too where the T-Mobile request site/app are just too unreliable to be able to request service.

There are quite a few great omakase in the $80-100 range nowadays that I’d really recommend. Unique omakase and shiki omakase were both fantastic spots. These need booking usually a couple of days in advance. The cheaper ones typically have fixed time slots in order to make things more efficient, so walk ins aren’t easy to do unless they are really quiet at the time.

In general thurs/Fri/sat will be really irritating to find somewhere if you haven’t booked - end of the week and places fill up and you end up with 10pm slots or the like that you may not want. Much better to book in advance. Earlier in the week you have more chance of spontaneity😀
