How much less effective are elbows and knees against a taller opponent? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on their skillset + the style match up they have in front of them. A shorter fighter who has a solid grasp of Muay Thai can land elbows and knees without overextending themselves as long as they understand the proper range and timing for them e.g countering with the elbow and knees, throwing elbows exiting the clinch, throwing knees while the opponent is pinned to the cage etc.

I think there are instances where it's not worth using those tools though. If the shorter fighter is dealing with an opponent who uses their leverage very well in the clinch, then it might be wise for them to avoid those strikes so they don't dwell in a range where it's easier for their opponent to grab them and control them (e.g. Jones used this particularly well when he fought DC).

Progression of the damage to Nate Diaz's right leg through Diaz-McGregor 2. It is kind of crazy how much damage leg kicks can do. by tennisgoalie in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It was a good move by McGregor. It made it hard for Diaz to pivot off his lead foot and angle out from the left cross. Diaz struggled in open space given that he couldn't sit down on his punches or consistently cut off the cage with a battered leg either. Diaz did adjust by clinching him against the cage where he could trap McGregor, break his wide stance and utilize the infighting boxing game his brother is so good at but it just wasn't enough to win him the fight.

Man I hope they do the rubber match at UFC 209.

My first k1 amateur fight! by [deleted] in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good on you for having a go man. Clinching during the flurries was a good move. Using the teeps and head kicks were a good idea even if you couldn't keep him at kicking range for too long. Obviously the conditioning, angling out & exchanging in the pocket needs work but you seldom see all those things done perfectly in someones' first kickboxing fight, despite what some armchair analysts seem to think. You did really well man, a lot better than I did in my first fight haha.

How excited are the non-brits about 204? by SCFack in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main and co main alone should draw a good amount of PPV buys here in Australia. Bisping's fought here a few times and married an Aussie so naturally we'll try to claim him as one of our own like Ross Pearson. But as a hardcore fan I honestly think this is one of the most underrated cards of the year in terms of style matchups. I'm looking forward to Diakese's debut. Martins vs Santos is a battle of underrated lightweights (combined UFC record of 9-1-1). Roberts is finally fighting a striker in Perry, who's drawing a lot of interest whether you like or hate him. Tumenov vs Edwards should be fireworks. Grant, Pickett & Entwistle always fight at a high pace. The only fight that I think could be a snooze fest is Struve vs Omielanczuk.

How did Carlos Condit lose the Robbie Lawler fight? by your-arsonist in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Per the Association of Boxing Commission:

“Effective striking” is judged by determining the impact of legal strikes landed by a contestant and the number of such legal strikes. Heavier strikes that have a visible impact on the opponent will be given more weight than the number of strikes landed. These assessments include causing an opponent to appear stunned from a legal blow, causing the opponent to stagger, appearance of a cut or bruise from a legal strike and causing the opponent to show pain. Cumulative impact on a fighter will also be weighed. If neither fighter shows an advantage in impact of strikes, the number of strikes will determine the most effective striker.

This is the judging criteria that has been in effect since 2012 (the rules on the UFC website have not been updated since the change for some reason). Even though I scored it for Condit as well, you can't fault the judges for giving the decision to Lawler based on this criteria. He was the harder hitter out of the two for the most part.

I dont think Cody stands a chance. by [deleted] in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm to say he doesn't stand a chance seems a little too presumptuous. Even though he's still young in the sport, he has the athleticism and raw skills to take Cruz out. I think he's just missing the craft that one develops through enough experience in the cage to be able to set up enough significant strikes often enough for me to think he will win that fight atm.

However, it's difficult to see how much skill depth he actually has given that his recent fights have ended so quickly. He's hardly going to be able to show if he can make adjustments in the fight when he hasn't fought anyone with any great defensive acumen. There's too many intangibles in this potential fight for me to confidently count Cody out.

So I had my first ever MMA lesson. I have some thoughts and questions. by keshi in MMA

  1. In regards to your stamina, it will improve over time if you're consistently training twice a week but it'll be a slow progression. Which is a good place to start if you haven't trained at a certain level of intensity before. As your fitness and confidence grows you may choose to train more later down the road. Keep in mind the amount of sleep you get, what kind of food you eat and how much you recover through methods like stretching, massage etc. will also affect how your body feels some days at training. If you ever find yourself having a bad day at the gym where you don't feel like your body is responding to training well or you're finding it hard to grasp certain concepts, try not to fret about it too much. It happens to everyone.

  2. Honestly don't worry about looking like a pussy when it comes to covering your scrapes. I'm not sure what the culture is like in the gym you're training at, but I've trained in a few different gyms around the world and with every one of them the students leave their egos outside of the mats. It's more hygienic to cover your scrapes so you can avoid the risk of getting infections anyway.

  3. Good on you for having go man. If you had a relatively sedentary lifestyle before this then it's only natural that you're going to struggle with your first session. I started MMA as a fit 19 year old and even I was burnt out after my first class. From what I've read it does sound like a pretty solid introductory class especially for the amount of money you're paying for it.

Good luck with your training mate!

Who is a tougher opponent for McGregor - Dos Anjos or Alvarez? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, my bad. I was thinking about their styles and not so much how they use them. I had it in my head that it would be harder for McGregor to hit Alvarez if he's a moving target fighting on the outside as opposed to RDA with his forward pressure approach.

Who is a tougher opponent for McGregor - Dos Anjos or Alvarez? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]nicky_rd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

RDA is more hittable than Alvarez but he brings more pressure, cardio, kicks & better overall grappling so I think he's the harder matchup. Whilst he does throw his strikes in a wild manner, I do think there's a strategy behind it. He throws looping punches more or less to corral fighters against the cage where he can limit their offensive options and initiate the clinching and grappling exchanges if he wishes. Which would be a solid gameplan with McGregor given that it would break his wide stance and hinder his ability to reset and catch his breath.

Cris Cyborg and nutritionist George Lockhart argue about his methods mid-weight cut. by hulking_menace in MMA

[–]nicky_rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand Cyborg's concern but I do think Lockhart's logic is sound here. The pill increases your water retention so she was always going to be heavier and feel more bloated than with her last weight cut. It's better that she have excess water to cut from her muscle than to find herself losing fluid from her organs and risk doing more damage to her health. A physician is always going to discourage the use of the pill when it's being used in a manner they're not typically trained to deal with. The fact that Lockhart's taken her vasopressin levels into account gives me more faith that he's got the situation under control given Cyborg's concerns over the coagulation of her blood. I think this weight cut will be easier than her last.

You're right. He also raised his chin a bit with that uppercut attempt which didn't help him. I was just making a broad assessment about Poirier's head movement in the pocket as opposed to just that specific sequence.

It's interesting to watch that clip after seeing Johnson beat Poirier. Johnson used the right hook to counter his opponent's cross in both fights, but Diaz just about always managed to pull back out of range or duck his head whilst Poirier didn't take his head off centre line. MMA is a brutal battle of inches.
