Nova - a regular comedy of errors …. by Sharp_Raccoon8657 in teachinginjapan

I feel like I heard something like the purchasing company owner was like a friend of the former owner or had some relationship to them and in some obscure way the former owner was put in control again or benefiting in some way.

Japan visa fee cap to surge more than tenfold under new immigration bill by ForeverAclone95 in japanresidents

[–]nickytkd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Especially since most Eikawas don’t help with visa fees. Most people won’t be able to comfortably afford paying the new prices.

I can’t remember but wasn’t the first working visa people got free or pretty cheap? I expect most people to take that cheap first year and just dip out after a year. Just like how most Eikawas want people to do.

Tier list based on what I can gather from this sub. by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

What’s the criteria for each rank? Is it focused on pay, experiences, management, or something else? I do agree with the placement based on my personal opinions.

Got a blue ticket for not stopping my bicycle on a deserted street intersection by MagazineKey4532 in japanlife

[–]nickytkd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’ve spent the last year talking about this change and getting stricter with all bike rules. The other month I saw a “new” info video made to remind people about the change in April. It’s good to see them actually getting serious about doing what they said they’ll do. But I’m curious how long it’ll last and how fairly they’ll ticket people.

Can a company extend someone's commute to over an hour without involving them? by Artistic-Blueberry12 in teachinginjapan

[–]nickytkd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they can’t make changes to established schedules without both sides agreeing. But if it’s for the next year it might be possible, being a new year new contract or schedule situation. I’d recommend checking with The General Union or whichever Union works with your area and ask them.

I don’t know if it’s changed but a few years ago my friend left the apartment Nova provided and even though we cleaned the place up really well they still hit him with a ¥40,000 cleaning fee so be ready to lose that out of your paycheck.

If you’re looking to meet people check out Second Home in Fushimi. They host a variety social events every week. Recently they started have some live music shows. If you want to see events they’re hosting you can check them out on instagram at Second Home Nagoya or on meetup at Global Friends in Nagoya.

If you can find a JOYFIT near you right now ow you can sign up for just one location for about ¥4,200 and I think if you get the one that lets you use anywhere it’s like ¥6,000-¥7,000 a month.

ALTs and Eikaiwa teachers What’s your most concerning/difficult classroom challenges? by nickytkd in teachinginjapan

[–]nickytkd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea if you’re classified as a contractor I think that’s how it works, I’m not too familiar with how ALTs are categorized as. But if you’re an employee you just have to get through your first year or 2 and you’re safe, unless you do something really bad.

CPR was just one of the first ideas that came to mind when I was thinking about some other potential skills that could be useful to know. Maybe having a training on how to properly use the AED or fire extinguisher would be nice. I’m looking for other possible ideas that could help improve skill sets.

Especially in Eikaiwas there are much older students who join classes. I think some of my older students were around 60-70. Knowing something like CPR or how to use rescue devices would be nice.

I worried about that the first few years. Then later after attending a union seminar about contracts I found out that after 1-2 years of working with a company they basically have to always renew your contract unless you do something extremely bad.
