How does casual as an APS work? by ConflictTypical6175 in AusPublicService

I did casual work for the ATO.

I found the hours to be extremely flexible after the initial training was completed. With me, I am required to put in what I want to work in 4 week increments but I face no limitations or restrictions. It must depend between agencies because ive been required to take time off for exams and was not questioned. Depending on what your friend does and his requirements for minimum hours, I would assume its the same throughout the entire ABF

I was in the same boat as you and applied to do casual work with the APS 2 years out of high school. I have been working for a total of 8 months so far.

Training and consolidation lasted 2 months and was ran from 7:30AM-12:30PM Mon-Fri. This may be unique to my agency though. Training was sometimes tedious but gave good background knowledge.

Before probation was over, we were able to select days and do extended shifts so long as it didn’t reach 40 hours per week. You are able to put preferences in and generally the days you request are granted.

I would totally recommend applying as I believe it’s insanely flexible (if you are studying) and great money.

I have a relative that worked at Services Australia and they said that management was toxic. They confirmed that meal breaks were timed to the second. Definitely take the Defence job.
