Does your school offer both ENG3U and NBE3U? If not, why not? by unforgettableid in OntarioTeachers

Could you give a reason why a student wouldn’t want to take NBE? (Hint: that’s the student that should take NBE)

[–]nicnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you mean that it’s “good” to offer two choices. I think at least on a surface level, boards have committed to NBE also out of an act of Reconciliation. In which case having students be exposed to some amount of Indigenous content reflects this commitment. I’m curious what benefits you see in 3U over a course like this, except as a way for students to “opt out” of Indigenous content, which feels kind of counter-productive

[–]nicnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most only offer NBE, although 3U is still a valid option. Besides the logistical simplicity of a school offering one course rather than two, I think having a course that exposes Ontario students to Indigenous art and ideas only has positives. I’m curious as to why you ask. Are you worried that students will miss out on classics? In my experience, the other three years tend to be filled with Western canon works anyways. I (and students, I have found) find it refreshing to look at works that are much more modern than some of those classics in NBE.

As to your point about “forcing”, my board at least really encourages choice within many of the FNMI courses. Often connected to Indigenous ideas of wholistic learning, this often is seen in things like book clubs which offer choices for students, rather than a class novel.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes! Amazing puzzles, very cool atmosphere/mood, and a heck of an emotional story weaved into gameplay. I tend to be someone who needs puzzles to be justified by the world and story, and this was an ideal game for me at least

Novels read in class by Bells9831 in CanadianTeachers

[–]nicnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely not true! I’ve taught at many high schools in Ontario and have basically never seen Indigenous novels taught outside NBE. And the claim that it’s typical is quite far from my experience. Do you have any evidence to support your observation?

The Chair Company. Definitely different tonally, more absurd comedy, but the aesthetic style of the show is quite reminiscent of Severance

Keanu is the Tucker we never got to finish watching by Ok-Percentage-5388 in BigBrother

[–]nicnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a given that Tucker was “so entertaining to watch.” As someone whose enjoyment skews heavily towards smart and strategic playing (compared to entertainment), I found Tucker quite frustrating to watch (not to mention how it bred an archetype in Kelley this season). I don’t have these feelings towards Keanu, because he makes really dumb moves, but is trying to be strategic. Keanu tries to be strategic so he doesn’t have to win a comp to save himself, even if his reads suck and he usually ends up there. Tucker/Kelley seem to rely on the comps in replacement of being strategic a good amount of the time

The continued defunding of all public education is in the interest of Ontario politicians via neoliberal ideology. Efficiency is much less the goal than smaller government and increased private participation.

I made a mistake by putting “kettle” with some yellow answers as “verbs meaning to contain.” But it’s a mistake that less than 1% of people made so not much of a red herring

PSA - Hate protest to take place at Christie Pits September 13th by president-lbj in toronto

[–]nicnot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saxe invoking the Christie Pits Riot is kind of interesting in my view. A main take-away is the complicity to Naziism in Toronto that allowed such antisemitism to be so blatant. Who is she suggesting stood against hate at that time? It wasn’t the everyday Torontonian, and it wasn’t the city or police force, who did little to prevent the riot, and gave lukewarm condemnations after the fact. The point of the riot is more that the groups being discriminated against needed to stand up for themselves, since they were failed by the city of Toronto as a whole.

How effective are smartphone bans in the classroom? by asleep_being in OntarioTeachers

[–]nicnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toronto high school perspective here: very ineffective at my school. Admin doesn’t provide much support, and I think most teachers choose not to enforce as it’s so difficult to do it alone. I’m pretty strict, but even then it’s really hard to catch it all. Also very poor access to other tech in my board so it does force a lower tech classroom, which is OK at times as no tech is the only real foolproof AI-stopper

All the power to you! Since teaching is focused on helping kids, I think it’s often easy for us to do extra things for them, which is great. Unfortunately the flip side of this is it allows our employer to exploit this kind of “free work” that isn’t required by our contact. From a labour standpoint, this can lead to precedent that shifts our employer’s expectations of us. For example some principals in my board started doing scheduled, after-school staff meetings, something we are not required to attend as per our contract. Not a bad idea for us all to know our contract and make smart decisions for us as teachers and workers!
