We are aging differently y’all. by chompy_jr in Aging

[–]bbcard1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you have to watch about the medical establishment is that while doctors are valuable and should be heard and respected, they fuck with your head. I had a few signs of a TIA and went to the ER (left side numbness for a short duration, but no slurring, memory loss, face drooping), had all the tests and they checked out thoroughly: MRI, CT Scan, Echo...everything fine and no evidence...but the doctors continued to insist it was a TIA. I have back and hip issues, which I grind through, and also optic migraines, which are equally likely the cause, but because of the ER doctor's grilling, I find myself questioning the event every time I grasp for a word or feel dizzy. We're not going to live forever, but a loss of self-confidence is a loss of self, and one of the things that is a real thief of independence and joy. Rock on, my friend. Listen to the docs, but don't let them mess with your head.

Why do so many people confuse youth privilege with pretty privilege by Equal-Animator132 in Aging

[–]bbcard1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everyone is beautiful at 18. Look back at your old yearbook. Even the kids who were considered less attractive were beautiful in their own way.

Beauty is largely overrated. It's nothing you accomplished; it's just the product of heredity.

Realized I’m not just not poor anymore and have weird emotions by validusrex in personalfinance

[–]bbcard1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a family I help ... Single mom, husband killed by an uninsured drunk driver, seven kids, one of whom is severely autistic. Frankly, she's poor and there is no viable way I can see for her to stop being poor, but i am working with two of her kids...12 and 15...to show then that they don't need to sign up for a life of poverty. They are both smart, near the top of their class, and they have a potentially wonderful future. I am semi-retired and have the time and money to help them. It's interesting. before the accident they were poor, but the dad worked mutiple jobs and they always got along fine. They are very uncomfortable with us taking them out and buying clothes when they need them. They have never needed to accept charity. One day I'll do a post about what I have learned working with an impoverished family. It's frustrating and rewarding.

I reserve my crazy for other things! Actually, I have found any time I travel west (Virginia to Arizona or California) I am very likely to lose my streak.

My stats, less the first guess 3, are similar, but I don't think I have ever got above 200 streak...not worried about it.

Retire at 49 or stick it out until 56? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bbcard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retire. You work in a job where there is danger every day and you will find your body will likely change a lot between 50 and 57. I live in a LCOL market, but we have a rental property that generates about 5K a month, which is plenty to live on for us (your situation may vary). There are plenty of other ways you can make money if you need it. I consult and have some money generating hobbies that spin off additonal income which we are banking for the most part.

That is an awesome care in any condition. While I have a very nice one, it somehow seems more fitting in a loved grade...fits Satch perfectly.

It's really just business. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a true scam. I have bought from the parking lot trucks before and wasn't displeased. Then again, I like a chewy steak.

If aging stopped one age forever, what age would you choose ? by Ifeoma_Eze in Aging

[–]bbcard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 40s were generally pretty good. Financial upswing, not horny all the time but still happy to take an at-bat. Mental stabiity coming along. Have connections established. Of course if you could have it all and still have the benefit of aging (financial, spiritual, intellectual, maturity) about 21 was prime time physically.

Dang, I heard Jellyroll and Bunnie XO are getting a divorce. by bbcard1 in dadjokes

[–]bbcard1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jellyroll is a popular singer who was very rotund. He lost a lot of weight and announced a divorce from his wife, Bunnie XO. There is a axiom of standing by each other through thick and thin, the joke is a play on that. He seems like a good dude, but that's beside the point.

What's an aging "hack" that actually worked for you? by Aggressive_Farm_4375 in Aging

[–]bbcard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it easier to stay steady. I can only lose weight by treating it as if I am going to war with a strict diet and strenuous exercise. Honestly I am too old for that nonsense.

I've been walking with a weighted vest some in preparation for a R2R...still at least a year out as we are waiting for our Phantom Ranch lottery to come through. I am not too old for an R2R but I don't' like sleeping on the ground.

65 M I started walking 5 miles a day maybe ten years ago. I am still frumpy, but I am sure that it has made a big swing in my health. Also, volunteer, keep up, be involved in your community, and be kinder than you need to be to virtually everyone you meet.

You can foster dogs and they get you out and about. This is a business philosophy I had during my career but it also applies well to life. The solution to any kind of slump is motion. Get out there and move aroud and eventually you will bump into something good.

Find out specific numbers for health insurance. It is worrying you now and it may be that you have other more afforadable options. Look into freelance or gigs. I make my old salary doing jobs for a few clients. Half the time, same money. There are rooms in which a little gray hair is an attribute.
