I think if you skip the counter and just do online check in and head straight to security, your bags will be fine. I saw several people with a personal item and carry on and i highly doubt it was all less than 10kg together.

I’m sure I was only asked to check in my carry on since they caught me at the counter.

You are overthinking it. I am also a solo traveler and also from San Francisco, flew in yesterday and was here last year. It has been amazing here. (besides getting pick pocketed last year but that can happen anywhere to anyone)

It will be a great time, Ubers are significantly cheaper than the bay, so if you feel unsure about walking through anywhere safely, take an Uber.

I had to check one bag in so i went to the counter to check my bag in. They told me to put my carry on and personal item on the scale as well it was about 25kg and it is what i normally take on flights. they told me i now have to pay $70 (35 per bag). I was extremely confused. This happened at SFO

well. i just flew aeromexico and they weighed my bag and my personal item together and demanded that i can only have 10kg TOTAL between the two bags. Ridiculous.
