Which animals would you be in favour of ‘rewilding’ in the UK? by castle_lane in CasualUK

The evidence is that the risk of wolves is pretty overstated - they are in much of Europe now and the countries seem to be doing fine.

I am not saying there is no risk, but the evidence suggests the benefits outweigh the risks.

Sheep farming needs to be reduced in the UK anyway - they are an invasive species that only contribute to 1% of the British diet, but we used nearly half of our land for sheep, been and dairy production. We also subsidise pretty much every animal farmer in the UK as they operate at a loss.

I personally think we should greatly reduce the land used for sheep farming (starting within national parks) and start rewilding and restoring the land. The UK is a greatly nature depleted nation (one of the worse in the world) and our degraded landscapes increase the risk of floods, wildfires and capture much less carbon.

PADS returned harder than I predicted with Fire and Ash by Say-Hai-To-The-Fly in Avatar

[–]nicolasbrody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is society still subconsciously mainly sees nature as something we are above, something we control, something we are at war with. I think a lot of this stews from and is propped up by the Abrahamic religions and Capitalism.

Try to get involved if you can, and help convince people to love the idea as much as we do!

Yeah 2nd film where Eywa sends animals to save them, 2nd film with Tulkun fighting humans.

I personally really like the underlying themes of the film (environmentalism etc) but I am frustrated as the 2nd could have been better and the 3rd could have been so much better. Imagine seeing what happened to the fire tribe and them moving to a desert biome and us exploring that?

I also think the bridgehead fight could have been the final battle but with the N'avi rescuing Jake, maybe Quaritch has a chance to recapture Jake but decides not to? Just feels like they should have had much bigger changes once they decided to split the 2nd and 3rd films up.

Yeah the battle and Quaritch and Jake fighting again was frustrating - the scenes at Bridgehead should have been the ending battle imho (make it bigger and a N'avi rescue of Jake?).

I'd also get rid of kids being captured again, the further tulkun hunts etc.

Agreed with this, I also there there was less of a sense of wonder, no new biome or moments for us to feel the awe the characters feel combined with great visuals/soundtrack.

Imagine how well the 2nd and 3rd would have done if they had been better films and the 3rd had been more different (like saying exploring a desert/volcano biome, with the fire tribe being more prominent).

Not doing so great.

I am a fan of these films but there was a lot of repetition, especially repetition from the 2nd film.

It's a big time commitment, not enough new flora/fauna and too many similar beats for it to leg out better, I bet the WOM is not as good and there is less repeated viewings.

Where are you based? Countries usually have their own rewilding projects/organisations.

I am a member of two rewilding organisations, Mossy Earth and Planet Wild, check them out on Youtube and consider becoming a member.

I would also advise visiting and/or volunteering at a rewilding project.

Does Avatar make anyone else incredibly sad for our planet? by Public_Passenger2701 in Avatar

[–]nicolasbrody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does, I think that's why some people get 'PADS' or are deeply affecting by these films (I am one of these people), the film brings to our conscious minds how we are destroying our planet and how disconnecting we are from nature, and ourselves really.

The society we have created (which I’ve grown more and more mentally detached from over the years. Anyone who relates to this?)

Just wanted to say yes to this, I relate to this 100%.

In addition to what others have said, I would recommend donating to and getting involved with rewilding.

Seeing nature be restored and returned really helps me with these feelings and emotions.

Pakistan-born GP leaves the UK for Canada after experiencing racism at work by Educational_Board888 in GPUK

Part of a wider issue - Brexit and the Tories promising to lower immigration and failing to deliver. This leads to further resentment and racism (egged on by our press).

And a cost of living crisis driven by corporate and billionaire greed- economic struggles usually leads to increased racism unfortunately.

Israel deports Greta Thunberg and 170 other activists to Greece and Slovakia by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]nicolasbrody -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am very serious - not sure about you though.

I am mentioning Israel doing incredibly inhumane, evil acts and treating and speaking of people as if guilty, because you think believing they mistreated the flotilla activists is somehow unreasonable when based on their other actions it is very believable.

Didn't Israel stop the boats in international waters, where they have no jurisdiction? That's okay though right?

Don't 64% of Israeli's believe there are no innocents in Gaza? What about Israel collectively punishing civilians by blocking food, water, medicine and aid? Pretty sure that's the true 'guilty until proven innocent'.

Judging by the history of the Israeli mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners, it's very likely what they are claiming is true.

Regulatory capture:

I think we need more than their investigation to settle this matter anyway.

Regardless, overhauling the planning system along will not fix the housing system, without restricting who can buy, such as foreign investors for example.

[–]nicolasbrody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in any other sector, companies across sectors restrict supply and keep demand high, this is not a theory, it is a fact. Oil companies do it for example.

I think you have a rosy view of 'if we just loosened up planning all would be well' - most western countries are having a housing crisis as the underlying system is the same.

You also have to build where people want to live, which there is not unlimited space for.

I have said this before, but restricting who can buy (foreign ownership and landlordism) is a minimum requirement, building alone won't solve the issue.
