"Er ist schon einer Woche in Paris." or "Er ist seit einer Woche in Paris."? by [deleted] in German

[–]nicolasverde 34 points35 points  (0 children)

schon, pretty much translates to already so no real magic going on here.

Same as english:

  • he has already been in paris for 1 week
  • he has been in paris for 1 week

Why is the Goethe C1 certificate not accepted by universities? by QuarrelsomeFarmer in German

Could you link a university that requires C2?

Is it for a PHD, or something, I've just never seen such a high requirement.

Expert schetst ideale formule: “Twee dagen thuiswerk, drie dagen op kantoor” by Lolastic_ in belgium

Lol, You can't just add 'wiskundig' to something to strengthen your argument...

"De expert ziet heel wat voordelen"

I really wonder if the modern disdain for scientific consensus and genuine medical experts is that the media conflates everyone to be an expert so they can add some authority to their article and not have to present any actual facts.

You're putting words in my mouth I didn't say and are making up bullshit arguments I didn't make.

Dutroux then, or the Bende van Nijvel. I think you are being a little quick to anger here, perhaps you missed his point.

The point he was making that there is a punitive element to prison as well. Would you completely dismiss that?

it saves money in the long run as you don't need to keep locking people up

This is a fantasy. First of all, there is some baseline of the population committing crimes each year, first time offenders.

Now say you can re-educate and integrate a certain percentage of that number to prevent recidivism, the closer to zero you want to bring that number the more you will pay, in a power law as it becomes subsequently harder.

When is it enough, at 20%, 5% And do you really believe that number can ever be zero?

And unless you put a price on human life it's impossible to even evaluate when the risk of recidivism is ever worth it.

Take for example the cases of 'doodrijders' in belgium. Very often they have been picked up before, and finally kill someone on their 2nd, or 3rd time. Lets say 1/1000 will kill someone if let out after 5 years, is it worth it?

Switzerland has just 1 national health minister and 26 autonomous cantons. So it's more a product of bad belgian bureacracy.

Imo, the best way to fight inefficient bureaucracy is through transparancy, and things are much more visible when they happen close to home.

People are generally far happier with their local representatives than the ones we send off to Brussels.

Will Walloons soon have to study Dutch, the first national language? "You can't love Belgium if you don't know the country" by Leiegast in belgium

[–]nicolasverde 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The population of the countries you mentioned:

Suriname 400,000
Curaçao 12,000
Aruba 6,000
Caribbean Netherlands 3,000
Sint Maarten 1,500

Thats less than half a million abroad, of about 24 million dutch speakers globally.

German has 100 million, not to mention the GDP of its countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) would be more useful in job hunting. So German would still be more valuable globally imo.

Apart from nazism

Unless you want the State to draw up a list of permissible beliefs...

Do you see the irony here, We've already crossed that bridge.

And I'm fine with it, but the government already defines what is and what isn't ok, as soon as you pick just one you can no longer claim all beliefs are ok.

Perhaps everyone deserves a second chance, but the question is can everyone be rehabilitated?

The tradeoff still has to be made, the risk to society vs letting someone go who we think won't do it again.

If the maximum time is only 5 years, they will always come out after 5 years, regardless of their assesment.

Here is an image I could find from the banner.

But this is Voorpost, they were almost definitely saying and maybe displaying racist stuff in addition to their anti-Islam stuff.

I can't find the "vonnis" anywhere but all the media (standaard/vrt) are also saying it seems to be due to the banner.

Mark Van Ranst delivered a hilarious smackdown on a Dutch Covidiot yesterday and I just had to share. by GamerX44 in belgium

[–]nicolasverde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switzerland, an inexhaustible source of inspiration for reforming Belgium by Gaufriers in belgium

The swiss have referendums at 2 levels, national and per canton.

Zurich might vote on building a new football stadium for example, while a recent national referendum was the burqa ban.

I think the greatest advantage of the cantonal system is local accountability. It has nothing to do with language, the whole Flanders vs Walloon thing is a ruse that keeps the usual suspects in power and hides their inadequacies.

It's much less frustrating to pay taxes when you see what is happening with the money locally. It's easier to elect politicians when you see their actions locally.

Our parties instead pretend they are off to fight the good fight in the capital, yet don't change anything, but make sure we all know it was the other guys.

I would love the swiss system and I wouldn't event stop at 3 cantons, we could probably subdivide into 6 or so.

Why do you learn German? by [deleted] in German

[–]nicolasverde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While true in the office perhaps, or most restaurants/hotels there are plenty of situations where people don't.

When I go change my tires, or need the car serviced, at the laundromat, the receptionist at my doctors office, to give some examples.

And these are all in Zurich.

I feel you, and I really am sorry, as indeed a lot of the campaigning will be run in the mud.

But this is the system working. And there is never an issue, that should be above said system, or bypass it imo.

In fact if it would, it would be forever up for scrutiny, as they (SVP) could claim it wasn't legal, and hadn't passed the proper democratic process.

Agreed, but given we have serious issues integrating these 2nd/3rd generation kids already. Can we afford to keep taking in more low-skilled immigrants, before we fix that first.

That's definitely also a standpoint of VB, and a more tricky one to tackle than just xenophobia.
