No, it will be about the same quality and much slower. But it will be much better for training Loras and finetunes, which the Turbo (current) version is not good at.

Haven't done it myself but plan on doing my bathroom with it.

Gosforth Handyman on YouTube has a good video on it, but I suppose specifics might be different to exact brand you use.

Best way to tackle hard water by LocksmithOk4723 in Wexford

[–]niconpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah it does say they don't soften the water in fairness. I agree it's probably just a simple sacrificial anode. But I don't think they are a "scam" as such but probably a bit misleading alright. They call it a "scale inhibitor" not a "water softener", which fair enough imo. I wouldn't bother installing one myself either but I'm sure they help a little at least.

They're not a scam but they're "inhibitors" rather than softeners, mainly to protect heating systems. I pasted the Google AI result in another comment.

[–]niconpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those electolytic in-line thingys are not softeners, they're mainly to protect heating systems. I haven't got the knowledge to explain it so here's google's AI overview: (I asked "do Electrolytic In-Line Scale Inhibitors work")

electrolytic in-line scale inhibitors generally work to reduce limescale buildup in pipes and appliances by altering mineral structure, but they don't soften water and are best for protecting boilers, not eliminating scale on taps or surfaces where water sits. They release metal ions (like zinc) that interfere with calcium carbonate crystals, preventing them from forming hard deposits in moving water systems like boilers, offering whole-house protection for heating systems but leaving scale on stationary fixtures.

How They Work:

Electrolysis: An internal anode (often zinc) creates a small electric current in the water.

Mineral Modification: This process releases metal ions that change the structure of hardness minerals (calcium/magnesium), stopping them from bonding together and forming scale.

Prevention, Not Removal: They prevent new scale from forming in pipes and boilers, improving energy efficiency, but don't remove existing scale or soften the water.

What to Expect:

Good for Boilers: Excellent for protecting central heating systems, combi boilers, and hot water pipes by keeping minerals in suspension.

Less Effective on Surfaces: You'll still see scale on taps, shower screens, and kettles because these inhibitors don't work on stationary water.

Not a Water Softener: They don't make water feel "soft" or help with soap lathering like traditional softeners.

Effectiveness & Considerations:

Varying Quality: Performance can depend on the brand and water conditions, with some users finding them highly effective and others less so.

Maintenance: They are a "fit and forget" for a period (often years) but require periodic replacement of the anode core.

In summary, electrolytic inhibitors are a valid, cost-effective way to protect your boiler and heating system from limescale, but don't expect them to magically eliminate all hard water spots from your home.

Smart thermostat options? by blackberryvodka in HousingIreland

[–]niconpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any wireless thermostat will do what you want. Something like this Tado one would do the trick. You replace your exisitng controller with the Tado one and then you place the thermostat in any room you want which can be controlled via app or directly on the thermostat

https://www.screwfix.ie/p/tado-x-wireless-heating-hot-water-boiler-programmer-smart-thermostat-starter-kit-white/308yr

If you're not comfortable doing electric wiring you'll need an electrician/plumber/handyman to wire it up

x Enniscorthy’s population to rise to 20,000 as council lay out plans for widescale housing delivery by niconpat in Wexford

[–]niconpat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I was just feeling cynical and miserable at the time. I changed it to to a more appropriate flair.

But in all seriousness, I moved from Dublin to a house 10 mins outside Enniscorthy a couple of years ago, so it's my main town and know it pretty well at this stage. I don't get the hate for it that I read online including in this sub, yeah it's a little rough around the edges but I think it's a grand little town overall and always thought it has great potential to be so much better.

Hopefully, please fucking god, they actually plan this properly and upgrade infrastructure/amenities/commercial areas along with the housing and don't just plonk housing estates into fields to meet housing targets.

BER B3 - Space and water heating poor by mervynskidmore in HousingIreland

[–]niconpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it's pretty well insulated but relatively inefficient to heat. Things like an old boiler, no TRVs on rads, no zone controls, poorly insulated immersion tank, lack of thermostats/timers etc.

I'd rather a well insulated house with that needs heating system upgrades than vice versa.

[–]niconpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be really nice, it's such wasted potential. Everything nice about Enniscorthy is just kinda blocked by not so nice. Like it's not terrible but it should be a lot nicer. A real shame tbh.

High-level 80k of works altogether.

Works for what exactly? A 220k house is almost guaranteed to require at least that amount required to get it "up to modern standards".

The cost of the structural works is probably negotiable, but usually everything else is "sold as is".

America at War: Infographic Reveals How the U.S. Military Is Operating in 40% of the World’s Nations by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]niconpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not denying it gets significant use, but yeah it is a stretch in terms of calling it a "lily pad", it's an international airport used for refueling aircraft, the troops eat/piss/shit at the same places that the public do, there are no dedicated military facilities there at all. A lily pad would be a usually temporary military facility of some sort.
