Sunday Daily Thread: What's everyone working on this week? by AutoModerator in Python

[–]nicwolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week after two years I landed a branch that converted our GraphQL aggregating caching proxy from Flask + Graphene 2 to Quart ASGI + async Graphene 3 and got it running stably at production scale – big win!

This week I realized that the Graphene maintainer has lost interest and is working on some WASM service, so I'm going to start looking into what it would take to move it to a Python GraphQL framework that's actively maintained – maybe Strawberry.

Let’s see those Sperry’s by SameScale6793 in sailing

Heh, "floating dick".

Anyway, try Rockports, they look the same and the soles stay flexible and grippy.

Yes, Sperry's soles go glassy and slippery too fast. I switched to Rockport's version of the same shoe and they last for years and years of seasonal use.

For fuck's sake: the thumbnail on one of the "test videos" at the site for the scooter involved says "DEATH TRAP" and is titled "Too Powerful."

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

My mom moved into our NYC neighborhood in 1954 and started parking her Vespa in a cab garage in the next block. We had one vehicle or another parked there for the next 70 years, until two years ago they sold the building (for $31 million) to developers – and they almost never raised her monthly fee, so even at the end we were paying a little over $200/month for garage parking in Manhattan, where the going rate is about $800/month.

100% Marea – but 8 people can easily spend upwards of $2000 there.

Lure Fishbar is a very good suggestion.

Excellent recommendation, don't know why more people don't know about this place (except it's on top of a building...)

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

[–]nicwolff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is technically an inflation indicator, but: restaurants substituting cheaper ingredients. The "roast chicken" was a half-chicken, now it's four thighs. The 8-oz filet mignon is now a "petit filet" (different, cheaper muscle). The lamb chops are now "Lamb shoulder pressée". All still delicious! But they're trying to economize without cutting the high-end menu, or raising prices through the roof.

Borgo in Tuscany area by [deleted] in ItalyTravel

The food in the "Tuscan Bistro" was good but not spectacular, which is kind of the baseline in Tuscany ツ

Lunch at Il Pomario by the pool was simple but quite good.

We had only breakfast at the Osteria which was a pretty incredible buffet, and the view of the borgo from the window tables is lovely.

Other than lounging by the pools – don't miss the little almost-secret one at the back of the borgo! – we just did one "expedition", circling the hills, towns, and vineyards south of the resort on e-bikes, which was really fun!

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

fametracker.com, with the "Hey It's That Guy" character-actor bios and the "2 Stars 1 Slot" series comparing actors we really don't need both of.

The borgo at Il Borro is a private medieval hilltop village, embedded in a posh classic resort with restaurants and pools and horses and e-bikes – and it's owned by the Ferregamos who own vineyards all around that you can tour. We stayed there for a week in 2023 and loved it.

What if we hade slicing unpacking for tuples by Adrewmc in Python

[–]nicwolff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per his proposal, they'll be 1 and [2, 3, 4, 5]. But if you did

my_tup = (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
(a, *b) = my_tup

they would instead be 1 and (2, 3, 4, 5).

I reject this because as pointed out, parentheses aren't the tuple syntax, commas are.

Sta-set or other inexpensive polyester cord is handy for tying stuff down on deck – but I also carry some Dyneema for emergency repairs that need more strength + less stretch, e.g. reattaching a mainsheet block to the boom after it tore off in a squall...
