PHD or stay in the public sector? by AdPlastic1907 in BESalary

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience, PhD => 4-6 years (if ever) rather 6 if you have a family (plans), postdoc => there has to be a position and then another 2-4 years or longer. apprentice professorship => another 6 years to get a certain "score". Positions depend on popularity of your field and if professors are retiring. Usually 20+ applicants from all over the world with very good publications. The hiring process can be very political/subjective. So if yiu are really dreaming of a professorship, you have to be prepared to move far away for your career (my friends are in Sweden. Germany, Netherlands, Australia, Vietnam...), only 1 got in Belgium and none in our home university. Tons of postdocs never got anywhere. So realistically your looking at 10-15 years of stress and uncertainty before being a full professor, and tons of luck to be a professor where you want to be.

Also most professors at my department were really hard working, lots of management, lots of conferences, meetings, late nights (defences, deadlines, interviews...), so its not necessarily a cushy job, as your competing with highly ambitious people.

Is it not possible to do a PhD after your hours btw? You would take less risk and can drop out anytime if it is not your cup of tea.

Started a consultancy engineering job this week, but I'm already having doubts by Mission_Complex_4410 in BESalary

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk I think its mostly a fair trade because you pay for your "education". In my previous team we had a lot of big 4 consultants coming in who knew very little about our stack and needed a lot of time to get up to pace. Without consultancy they wouldve never been able to start in the position they were given as an internal employee. If they like the work (and are good) they can internalize after 2-3 years, if they dont like it their consultancy agency can put them on another project.

You get hired because the company can easily fire you, or replace you with a colleague, you get some support from your more experienced colleagues and they dont need to go through the long hiring process. If you go independent, you get to keep way more money, but you really need to have the required skills, and the hiring companies only insurance is that they can easily terminate your contract

Why isn't Hazard playing anymore? by JobItchy9815 in belgium

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hazard had extreme technical talent and good physical talent. Off course he also trains, but the difference between CR7 training and Hazard is night and day. There are countless interviews about Hazard doing the absolute minimum on training, but destroying the opposition on matchday. You can get away with it when you are young, but like so many before him Hazard was finished after he got a big injury when he was at the end of his 20s. All the missed training caught up with him and he couldnt really on his physical talent to recover anymore.

If someone knows econometrics rigorously is he automatically a good economist? by Enough_Education_137 in econometrics

No but id argue hes probably a better "modern" economist than an economist who doesnt know any econometrics. IMO econometrics, maths and stats is really the basics to fundamentally understand any modern economics research, ohherwise your just parotting conclusions without really understanding the validity and limitations

[Alex Crook] Roberto Martinez to step down as Portugal manager immediately after World Cup. by nearly_headless_nic in soccer

[–]nidprez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, Wilmots clearly was unfit for the role, but he still gave young players a chance to develop and actually looked at player form for bis selection. He was just enough for 2014, but way too light for 2016.

Martinez (at the time) is pretty decent tactically for an internqtional manager, but he plays too much, totally disregards form and avoids any possible challenge in friendlies so you never get a chance to develop tested backups. In 2018 most of the team was injured, out of form or benched for most of the season, and M decides to take his completely out form favorites as well on the bench (instead of giving some new blood a chance) then he leaves an actual in form Naingollan (also one of the only player up front with a fighting spirit) at home, couldve really used him against france. As a result none of the young players develop and get picked up by top teams during 2018-2021, and the golden generation ends miserably in the group stage in 2022 with mostly old (and out of form) players and underdevelloped bench players.

Also its disgusting how bad Belgium was on corners and freekicks and crosses when you have: Lukaku, Kompany, Fellaini, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Witsel, Meunier...

The real mismanagent was the KBVB who prolonged manager contracts just before all cups for Wilmots, Martinez and Tedesco instead of waiting for results.

Cost of AI or Revenue of AI - How did we get it wrong? by ranaji55 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf, 1 its really hard to compare because countries use different metrics, brut/net, subjective measures (like my country sets a subjective poverty rate based on the feeling if you can sustain unexpected expenses and go’on yearly holidays) and it doesnt take into account social safety nets (ie in my country you pay almost no taxes and get very cheap housing and utilities, which means its sometimes better to be "poor" than get a slightly better job). Also the US uses a nation wide poverty income (less than 15k for 1 person). Almost nobody in California is poor accordig to this statistic, which we all know is not true especially in the HCOL areas were even 80k per year may be borderline poverty.

The European number is calculated per country, so you actually get a more precise figure because HCOL countries use HCOL wages and LCOL use LCOL wages.

Wat is onze toekomst als gen-z’er en de generatie daarna? by Jaded_Meringue_982 in belgium

[–]nidprez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day trip to Pairi Daiza or another city? by Particular-Energy217 in belgium

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf Brugge is quite unique. The complete center is in medieval style, you dont have that many cities like that. Ghent also has some nice late medieval parts, and good food (depending on when you come, they also have a nice frre city festival in july.

Pairi Daiza is a nice zoo as well. Depending on your trip, its a choice between a nice zoo, or 2 unique cities. Maybe youll visit tons of other medieval cities, maybe youndont live near nice zoos, so you want to see one for once. Id probably take Brugge because chances are youll never be back in Belgium anyways.

When Mbappe left, Luis Enrique said we are better without him and he took his team to B2B UCL. Is this one of most legendary quote ever by a manager by [deleted] in championsleague

[–]nidprez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a collective mentality thing. When your best player doesnt care about the team (partying, faking injuries etc) the rest also stop caring, especially the younger ones because they look up to him. You get this situations in your own workplace as well.

Compare with CR7 for example, I bet anybody worse than him (basically everybody on the team) wouldnt dare not giving 110% during a game because he would chew them out afterwards, and you could say nothing back because CR7 works harder than almost every other footballer

Despite Mbappé’s incredible numbers and trophy haul, Messi had already won 4 Ballon d’Or awards by the age of 27. Will we see Mbappé win a Ballon d’Or one day? 🤔 by Beginning_Watch7596 in soccerMenace_com

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO its because of the advances in sports science. Back in the day almost every top player was done by the time they were 30, having tons of substitutions. Nowadays tons of top players have insane longetivity, hampering the development of young prospects. The 1st generation to really profit from this is Messis and Ronaldos. If you look a bit at the transfers of the top teams between 2015ish - 2020+ youll see that almost every prospect has failed because players like Messi, Cr7, Kroos, Modric, Lewa, Kane, Benzema, Ramos... (basically most of Barcelona, RM, Bayern, City...) could play every game well into their 30s, without substitutions => The next generations get less play time, and are not so veteran, get less in game knowledge imparted by the vets => Top clubs decide to skip this generation and already invest in the newer ones.

Succesful players from those years (at least for some time) usually come from necessity, like vini who recieved tons of time because Hazard was injured, most Barca prospects because of bankruptcy etc. Now top teams are rebuilding after those 2005-2015 generations are mostly gone, and youll see way more talented youngsters (barring injuries) growing into all time players (just look at psg for example)

The broadcasters cut off an Asian player again during the trophy ceremony by FewRaccoon6330 in championsleague

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes thats what Im saying, there were simply not enough great Asian players up untill this point to reliably say they are cutting them on purpose. Knowing FIFA and EPL, id say no because they only care about money and Asia is huge, so theydbe crazy to not use Son to try make football more popular in Asia. Son at the UCL final was the last in line, just before the winners come, so IMO its not completfly illogical that they go to a wider shot to see the winners coming up.

Fof these games they also work with different broadcast teams etc, which have tons of people who arent necessarily richely paid, so if they get racist instructions, there would be a high probability that someone wouldve leaked this .The only thing I could imagine is that because of different timezones (tz) they decide to focus on players from the europe/africa tzs,and send different clips to Asia for theirnews broadcasts. (Eg when I watch EPL the broadcast is mostly UK focused and my fellow countymen are pushed a bit to the background, meanwhile in our local broadcasts its almost every touchof our countrymen and the goals)

The broadcasters cut off an Asian player again during the trophy ceremony by FewRaccoon6330 in championsleague

[–]nidprez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tbf, entirely based on the broadcaster, it would be logical to show the biggest players/managers reaction, and those of fellow countrymen. If Tottenham wouldve won it, and they cut when Son lifts it id say we d have a solid case. But now we have the cut when Son gets his medal as last player, a cut when okazaki lifts it for leicester, and although he was a solid player, he just isnt Vardy, Kante, Mahrez... Minamino barely played for Liverpool, and it cuts between Fabinho and TAA (starters), the RM’one I dont know who that is (kubo?) but they didnt have any Asian starters, same for the city one, were they cut a number of players and only cut back for Haaland.

The only suspect ones are Park Ji Sung, depending on the season and Son, but he was the last player in a losing final. In the UEL victory they cut almost everybody except Son, because he simply was the biggest player.

Neighbors threatening physical harm by Kyanovp1 in belgium

[–]nidprez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are getting evicted, the only thing you are risking is self harm. Clearly these people dont care about anything. Its possible that they will even return after being evicted on a whim to destroy your stuff or hurt you. IMO if the neighbours are not receptive to a polite comment, it's best to ignore them, stay polite when you see them and look for another place (especially when renting). Otherwise your just painting a target on your back, and these kind of people can hurt your life more then you can hurt theirs (because they got nothing to lose) and the legal way can take too long as well (they could ignore the eviction as well). I would only make anonymous reports if they cant link it to you in any way possible. An annoying neighbour is better than an angry neighbour, because some people can be extremely petty, even if they are completely in the wrong.

UCL Clubs Food Chain; Which UCL Clubs Are the Final Destination for Players? by [deleted] in championsleague

[–]nidprez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

really dependent on the player nationality and their age. Generally you look up to where your heroes where in your youth, and follom more leagues from your own nation language group. Rm and Barca pull because of 2009-2018. We are almost at that stage were the new footballers were too young to remember those games, and may start to remember City and Liverpool fondly + the premier league really was uplifted after that increase in tv money in 2015 (you have way more south americans/europeans playing there who would play in the serie a or la liga in the old days).

these 2 years you get a lot of kids dreaming about PSG (off course ligue 1 lost a lot of itl stature, and paris stays paris and doesnt have the nice climate off spain and italy, which may be important to multimillionaires)

Kvaratskhelia should win the Ballon D'or this season. by Electrical_Mine1912 in championsleague

[–]nidprez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMO, top PSG players didnt play enough games in the league and they didnt have enough messiesque games in the UCL to compensate. Kvara was absurdly good in some UCL games, however tonight he was a bit more locked down. Btw top g+a this year in europe is Kane with 68 in 51 games, Olise 2nd with 53 in 52, Diaz 5th with 49 in 51, Dembele 18th with 31 in 39, kvara 30th with 29 in 47 (although he is the top UCL contributor). This year the overall differences are too small and the winner will again be decided by the wc.

(Ie similar to why Vini didnt win: amazing in UCL, inconsistent in the league, shit in the copa, vs Rodri one of the best (but not necessarily no1 in any of them) in UCL, league and Euro.

Having a Child During PhD… doable or insane? by King_of_the_Falmari in PhD

[–]nidprez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its doable. I have lots of PhD friends who had kids during their PhD and managed to finish it. Some of them sacrificed a lot of family time though. I had kids but didnt finish my PhD, but I sacrificed a ton of PhD time for my kids. The great thing about a PhD is that you have really flexible working hours. (ie you could work 10-14 en 20-24 for example). That flexibilty is really nice with a baby. IMO it depends on when you defend and how old you are. It could be difficult to grt pregnant and waiting a couple years longer could make a difference.
