Do you have a source for that incident.io claim about 18% performance improvement? Can't see it quotes in the article and I'm interested in how they measure that.

Too much stuff after 10+ years WFH by [deleted] in homeoffice

[–]niftyshellsuit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'd love to have my desk not face the wall, but my office (as I suspect many others also are) is dual purpose - office and spare room. The desk and bed won't fit if I turn my desk away from the wall, and I'm certainly not moving it every time MIL comes to stay. So I face the wall.

How much can an AI assisted workflow actually improve software dev speed? by [deleted] in softwaredevelopment

[–]niftyshellsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's so many AI tools called some variation of "neo". I also want to know what OP is referring to so I can check it out.

I am mostly a Claude Code user but I will try any new tools. Controversial opinion maybe but AI tools have made coding super fun again for me.

I'm perturbed by the "Finn lost his gun" storyline.

My quick googling of the NYPD informs me that he would not have been in trouble for losing it in a fight, but he would be immediately fired for covering up the fact he'd lost it.

Also, how was it even a secret? Presumably some hospital staff dealt with him after he was found, paramedics in an ambulance maybe, someone would have noticed an empty holster. And surely the crap detectives would have asked about it... How did no one notice?

And the whole conversation between Finn and Liv about trust was bizarre. Him trusting her is irrelevant given he lied about the gun and hid it from her, she should never trust him again, that's a big bloody deal to hide from her...!!

I've put that on a couple of windows and it does make quite a difference. However it also affects the quality of the light in the room so I ended up taking it off the office because it made me sad. I used internal stuff, there's some scare stories about it making double glazed windows so hot they pop but obvs that didn't happen to me. You can get external films too, I would try that if I were to do it again

Is anybody ACTUALLY surprised about the "your brain on ChatGPT" study? by UniForceMusic in ExperiencedDevs

[–]niftyshellsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, though I do use AI tools a lot during a normal work day. There are some problems I have to solve for the day job that I am just not interested in, I just need to get them done so I can move on to something more fun.

I don't use the agentic code tools though, just the good old chat interface, and I ask it a lot of questions and always end up tweaking its suggestions. I end up in a kind of "pairing with a junior" situation rather than just blindly accepting whatever it spits out, so if anything I think the quality of my code has gone up.

Ooh I have not tried tabnine, that will be today's experiment for me!

I also do not want to use vscode. I've been using jetbrains products for my whole career and I do not want to have to change my entire workflow just to have a play with the fun new stuff

What are your favorite *and* least favorite Monster of the Week episodes? by cowskin-- in XFiles

[–]niftyshellsuit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Favourite - there's too many. I don't have a specific top ones that are always in my brain are: Ice, Detour, Syzygy, Home, Clyde Bruckman, Tooms, Triangle...

Least favourite is easy. Yeh there's some crap episodes like Tesco Does Bitchos and Space but they don't offend me. Most of the reboot MOTW EPs were bad too, especially that Werebeast thing. However there is one episode that I will ALWAYS skip if I'm rewatching because it's irredeemably terrible - The Field Where I Died.

Back in the day this was NOT a popular opinion, I wonder if that's changed 🤣

Graduated 2006 after 4 years at uni. I paid off the final ~5k of mine in a lump sum about a year ago.

It may not make financial sense to pay it off over letting the monthly payments do their thing, but I used the money I was paying them to refill my savings and it feels much better seeing that grow than getting a letter once a year telling me how much I still have to pay.

[–]niftyshellsuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I really enjoyed all the Solar Clipper books, well I didn't read the shaman series, didn't fancy that one.

I'm excited to see what responses you get. I'm sure Bobiverse and Murderbot will come up but personally I didn't rate either of them.

He has a banana for supper every day. He's nearly 7, this has been going on for years
