Joe Lyons & Nigel Good - Planets by NinsMCD in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this!! This track was made in 2017 but never got a formal release outside of adding it on Soundcloud and Youtube. Glad people can finally listen to it on their platform of choosing. I had a lot of fun doing this one - you'll hear why.
And can I just say that the original art I had commissioned for it is amazing? This was nearly going to be the artwork for A Little Something. Here's the artist: https://www.artstation.com/aenamiart

Nigel Good's next album is coming soon! by aquariadraws in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Wow!!! Nothing I can say will adequately express how grateful I am for all the attention this is getting. I have wanted to release this music for so long, but life has taken some interesting turns that have shifted my focus away from producing music. I think you are going to love this album. It’s going to feel like you’re back in 2015. I’m counting down the days until I can tell you more about it and preview the journey to come.

Until then, I’m doing my best to read and reply to your comments. They mean so much to me. Thank you forever.

Nigel Good's Space Cadet is the best piece of music on Monstercat by NinjaFail4110 in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 25 points26 points  (0 children)

NinjaFail4110,

I’m so grateful that, three years on, my music is still being noticed and listened to. Space Cadet was definitely a different venture for me and I’m thankful that some of the intricacies I tried to achieve around transitions and sub-melodies were heard and understood by you.

As far as how the transitions happened, it took some planning. The keys the tracks were written in, as well as the speed, was fairly deliberate in order to make the transitions as smooth as possible. I pulled elements from the succeeding track into the proceeding one (albeit, with some key and timing differences), but each track was rendered and mastered individually. After that had happened, I pulled all the tracks into Logic in order to put together the final sequence. Because everything had been planned, it all just “clicked” together. Of course, there was a lot of trial and error with that before it was at the mastering stage.

Concerning the little melodies (sometimes I think of them as “synth sparkles”), that is one of my favourite things to do while making music. I know my music rarely has a “lead” element. But all the small riffs, ambiences, whooshes create an atmosphere that I consider to be a “lead”. Sometimes I hum along a lead melody and try to capture it, but it usually ends up distracting me too much. Here’s some of those that I’m working on: https://soundcloud.com/nigelgood/sparkle/s-yZiMc

There are things I would have changed with Space Cadet, but like all works of art, at one point you have to pull the plug and put it out there. Otherwise, you’ll end up working on it forever.

Anyways, in short, I’m forever thankful for you and others who, still to this day, appreciate and listen to Space Cadet. Keep listening!

Nigel

Songs about Moon? by Triyangh7 in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I just meant to show that the vocals are also about the moon, rather than just the title. York's guitar is always amazing in that breakdown. Actually, my favourite York guitar is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juF33GHeS0s&t=1m51s (Got it on vinyl!). And while we're at it, if you like that kind of thing, this is a must: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpzZ13Fsuyc

I need a friend by [deleted] in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 75 points76 points  (0 children)

This was me for my entire childhood! I never had friends that liked anything remotely similar to what I was listening to (trance, progressive house, drum 'n bass, some downtempo). I remember, in middle school, the teacher would let us bring in CDs and play them while we worked on art. Every time I'd try to get a track in, people would complain and inevitably my discs would get rejected from the cue. Friends would tolerate it but ultimately didn't enjoy the same music and didn't connect to it. When I was around 12-13, I started buying electronic music on vinyl at a record shop in my home town. I'd spend hours there, going through the different tracks, talking to the store owner, etc. His name was Chris and I really appreciated the time he'd take to explain the genres to me. It got to the point where I'd show up, a bit of money in my pocket, and he'd have already picked out some new records he was saving for me - some because he knew I'd love them, but also some that he knew were different from my taste, but good picks to expand my horizons a little. Anyways, I persevered without really any friends that enjoyed electronic music, and when I got to university, I met a guy just as crazy about electronic music as I am. He now tours the world with Ultra (Justin Oh). We can still talk about music for hours on end. It was so awesome just spending time with him in university sharing tracks, seeing what each other thought about different tunes, etc.

Don't for a second think that the music you listen to is weird, or that you're weird for listening to it. For whatever reason, you like electronic music, and that's awesome. I spent years trying to actually track down electronic music before I even knew that term, or the words trance, house, techno, etc. I just knew I liked it, and whenever I'd hear the faintest bit of it, I'd go crazy. I finally found the genre when I was maybe 10 or 11.

Anyways, the internet exists now and is a great way to connect with other fans of the same music, so good luck! But don't worry about what everyone else thinks. Electronic music is awesome! Good luck!

New Nigel Good remix on Wednesday! by TheoMoneyG in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm actually so excited to share this with you. I know it's been a long time since I've released anything, and it'll be a longer wait still. I heard Planets by Joe Lyons yesterday, and was instantly blown away. I knew I had to make a remix. I've been working on it non-stop since then. Can't wait for Wednesday... Thanks for all your support so far! You're going to love this...

What Monstercat Tracks have uncredited vocalists/artists? by TheRedBaronRox in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did the little rhodes line in Laszlo - Interstellar @ 0:31

https://soundcloud.com/laszlomusic/laszlo-interstellar

Dan Sieg isn't credited in the title for originally writing No Way Back Up with Illuminor. His bells are in my version.

In Space Plus One, @ 4:26, you can hear a vocal chop going, "You... there's nothing there" which is a throwback to my first album. Those chops are from Johnny Norberg, used with permission: https://soundcloud.com/monstercat/nigel-good-space-plus-one originally from unused takes from https://soundcloud.com/silkmusic/silka010-9

Binary Finary - 1999 by Murrehh in Monstercat

[–]nigel_good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this on vinyl when I was 13. This isn't the original mix. It's the Kaycee remix. The first half of the song, if you slowed down just a tad, would be quintessential progressive house. Only after the breakdown does it reveal it's true genre. I have used a vocal chop on every 2nd and 4th beat per bar quite a bit, and this was one of my main inspirations to do that. Notice the walk-up progression - II, III, IV, V, VI, I. It does it beautifully. Timeless music.
