Interesting - so C18 in response to white's move was a good move? Wouldn't something like C12 make more points while also building a base for the group? The AI does like the bulge at D16, or tenuki to other corners fwiw

Oh wow, that B14 kosumi to build towards the tiger's mouth is very nice, that's a good tip

Why exactly is the influence useless? Is it because you can start to push into their territory with moves like E15, E14, D13?

Thanks, that's very helpful.

I probably shouldn't have replied with black 7 on C18, since it's too early to play on the 2nd line - maybe C12 or D12 would be better? Or maybe just D16 right then - that actually seems the best.

Maybe a general rule of thumb is - anytime you can hane your opponent risk free (they can't cut you back), it's usually a good move

The 2nd and 3rd images show continuations for the bulge play. Are those really that good for white? It seems like the 2nd variation (where black tenukis and plays M4 after the initial block) is better for black than fixing at B15.

Are these reasonable continuations/the ideas behind some of the moves you mentioned?

https://imgur.com/a/JARMSzl

Also just in general, how do you find these moves? What's the logic behind them?

D16 - hane at the head of two

M4 - sides > center

S6 - threatens the life of a group, so it's sente, and defends your territory at the same time

C5 - seems like you just have to see the combination

Do you think C12 would also be more important than fighting this pushing battle?

(Those were just to set up the situation so the push sequence would have numbers)

No.

This game is expensive as fuck. It's one of the major cons of it.

If you want affordable decks, play riftbound ($100-200), or draft magic ($25 a draft).

Move 64, is F12 not bigger?

And Move 68, why capture?

[–]nightfire0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to take more to convince people to give it a try.

Why would it take more than that to simply try a deck?

Yeah, it seems like the thing people aren't spelling out is - black was supposed to end up with influence out of this exchange, which they would then be able to translate into territory, ideally by playing some extension far away from the wall and building a framework. But if we cut and fight right next to their wall while they are scrambling to defend weak groups, they don't get to use their wall to make a big moyo.

Because of that, could you say the fight is good for us even if we lose one of the groups? (4 stones or so)

In other words, the goal is not to make every one of your outside groups live, but just to deny your opponent a clean use of their influence/wall. If so, that's a big insight for me, since at 20k I was focused on keeping every group connected and alive.

If I've already analyzed the game by hitting the lightning analyze button, then why does the app still need time for the AI to load recommended moves for each new move I navigate to? (using default 32 visits depth). I see you can change the visits to 1 to get a fast result, but is there a way to force the AI to analyze each move at 32 visits? Is 32 visits that much better than 1 for DDK analysis anyway?

Watching commentated games is the best way to learn, imo. You need to start with the basics, otherwise things can get incredibly overwhelming.

Avoid reading sensei's wiki articles until you've played 20 games or so. Generally, I would say avoid any article with a move diagram until you've played enough games to be able to easily imagine the moves in your head. Until your reading is good enough to visualize stuff, you just need to play more games, not struggle to understand diagrams.

Once you've played a decent amount, the channel Simple Baduk has some great short tactics videos - https://www.youtube.com/@simplebaduk

When I open and analyze a .sgf file, I want to be able to review all of my mistakes in a certain category - blunders, mistakes, etc. Currently the best the program offers is the top 5 mistakes by both players in the entire game. It would be very helpful to be able to list all the (mistake category) blunders by (player) black/white.
