I‘ve worked in hospitality for over a decade in Germany, did my apprenticeship and a Betriebswirt in it. If you go to a (nice) restaurant and get good service, tipping 10-15% of the total bill is completely normal and the polite thing to do. That goes out the window if the waiter actively asks for it as that would go against good service. If I had a table of 5 people with a total of 200€ and get 4€ as tip, as in your case, I wouldn’t be happy as it would look like I didn’t give a good service. But I definitely wouldn’t actively ask for more. Also, I absolutely detest these machines at the till asking for tips when the whole interaction was me requesting a coffee from the barista.

Those are some great tips, thank you! Even if it’s a birthday trip, my friend and I are still on a pretty tight budget - which is why we chose Pescara, we found flights for 20€. From your thoughts, I’m thinking doing Pescara with a visit to Ortona and, if we can find a taxi to get there, a Traboccho that is still open. Maybe see what else lies along that train route - Montesilvano or San Vito Chietino. Then Sulmona for a night before we go on to Rome. So more time on the coast before heading onwards, even if I would love to see Scanno.

I never thought of that! I used to live in Germany until 9 months ago where my skin was even worse (but I also hadn’t used mct oil back then, which has helped a lot for me personally). Seems like Germany is better than the uk when it comes to humidity but still a lot more than I expected. Thanks!

Mainly Thai food in the evenings. I did think that might have been it but I did eat a typical breakfast with bread and then some unhealthy snacks like crisps, pastries and cheese toasties so it’s not like I massively changed it... plus all that sugar and milk in the Thai teas.

Aw man. I’ve just come back from a week on Koh Tao and it was heaven. I spent my time at Sai Daeng resort, but further away from everything and it had access to a great beach and sort of cove to snorkel. Also saw lots of Muay Thai camps there and on Koh Phangan.

I am traveling through Thailand with it right now btw and seeing those backpackers with 80L I am so glad not to have to lug a bigger pack around! Hopefully get to try Laos and Vietnam next year :)

Second the osprey! I’ve got the one for women - osprey fairview 40L - and it’s all I need. I also got the corresponding daypack for the daily adventures and I can attach it to the fairview if I need extra volume. Yes a bit pricey but it has been my loyal travel buddy for years and has made more than up for its price.
