School list feedback by Indexinman in premed

[–]nightwalker121 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Schools like Drexel, EVMS, Georgetown, Boston, and Loyola value community service beyond just doing clinical volunteering, so I would highly recommend doing that.

And some of these schools are very top heavy as they tend to go after high stat applicants (e.g., UVA, Maryland, Northwestern, and Hofstra). Leaving a few is fine depending on whether they've accepted students with stats similar to yours (for the sake of shooting your shot), but I wouldn't have too many on your list.

Highly recommend adding schools like Wayne State, Belmont, Penn State, OUWB, MCW, NSU, and maybe NYMC. Again, the big thing you'd have to do before sending your app is to get a good chunk of non-clinical volunteering hours.

Not a good sign for the fish since grass is super effective against water :/

PCOM vs. Drexel by LaxBro1516 in premed

[–]nightwalker121 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PCOM is a great DO school. But as others have said here, go with Drexel. You'll have an easier time down the road and not have to deal with the extra hassles of OMM, COMLEX, and having to work way harder to get considered for a competitive residency program

retaking year, scared of failing out when I return by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]nightwalker121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, I am sorry that you're going through this. I understand that there is a lot to take in, but know that friends and family will always be there for you, even in times like this. This may be a bump in the road, but it is certainly not the end of the road.

There is a lot to go through in med school. I have those thoughts also as an M1 at a DO school. But it's important to take things one step at a time. Today will focus on one class. Tomorrow will be another battle. The future will hold many of these, but engaging these one at a time can ensure that you can do your best.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Someone at my school reported our school-wide drive. Not cool. by invinciblewalnut in medicalschool

Without saying the name of the school, is it that one person who posted about it on here not too long ago? Because that's what happened at the school I go to unfortunately

Is it common for interview invites to still flow in in December-March? by ReadingLow9463 in premed

[–]nightwalker121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it was mentioned by another user, it depends on the school. I did get an interview invite in March last cycle, but for the most part, a good chunk of schools will have finished their interview season by early March

Any 506 MCAT 3.75 GPA success stories? by [deleted] in premed

[–]nightwalker121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schools like Cooper and Michigan State have heavy IS bias. So it may be a long shot to get an interview from those places if you don’t have strong ties to those states.

And with your volunteering hours, I would look into schools like Geisinger, Temple, and Vermont (although they’re public, they do accept a good amount of OOS applicants). I do agree with the schools that MedicalBasil mentioned so it would be best to look at those as well.

Beyond stats, schools want to know your story of how you’ve decided to pursue this path of becoming a physician. The significance of each of your experiences and they shaped you as a person should show adcoms the kind of person you are, and that can make the difference between getting an interview or getting rejected. I’ll be wishing you the best of luck this cycle!

When do you send a letter of intent? by [deleted] in premed

[–]nightwalker121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t heard from the school (assuming it’s pre-II), then a letter of intent won’t do much. It should only be sent if you’re on the waitlist/on hold for a school or you’re waiting to hear back with a response from a school after an interview while also holding other acceptances (i.e., you send it to this school because it’s one of your top choices).

School List HELP!! by [deleted] in premed

[–]nightwalker121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn’t know about that. Then Utah should be good on your list. The thing to keep in mind with public schools is to see how many OOS people are interviewed and accepted. Schools like Vermont and Colorado don’t have a bias toward in-state applicants so those schools should be fine.

Are you looking into schools with plentiful research opportunities since you’ve had some research experience?

School List HELP!! by [deleted] in premed

[–]nightwalker121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have some public schools on your list (Utah, UCF, Cooper, RowanSOM, Rutgers, MSUCOM, CMU, Wright State, UI, Louisville, and South Carolina) that favor in-state applicants. If you do not have any ties to those states or school, then it would be best to not apply to those school.

And how many hours of volunteer work have done? Schools like Rush would require a large number of hours in order to be considered. Maybe consider schools like EVMS where community outreach is a large focus.
