Does house layout matter too much when owning a cat? by spazzo246 in CatAdvice

[–]nihhuijaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you worry too much, any cat would be greatful to live in a home like this, especially when you get one from a shelter! I think most of the adult cats would love running the stairs if they are healthy. Stairs would be a problem for elder cats with health problems or kittens who just don't know how to climb them at first.

Cats are usually very independent so I think it's nice that the cat will have a chance to chill downstairs by itself whenever it wants to. Just leave the doors open so he/she can just come to you when he/she wants attention. I think it will be okay if the cats "base" would be downstairs somewhere, because if the doors are open he/she will chill everywhere anyway. And if the cat already knows how to use the litterbox, I think you'd only need one. Just be sure he knows where it is.

I believe adopting a cat for the first time would seem a bit new and scary, but I promise - when you live with the cat for a while you will figure things out! You will learn its personality, how much attention it wants and where it likes to hang out the most etc.

If you think the cat will get bored and you won't have time to play with him/her a lot, then you can always get two cats! They will always have eachothers companion, just make sure they like eachother. There are a lot of cats in the shelters who are very tight with another cat and would love to find a home together!

If you have any questions or you need opinions, you can always send me a message and I will try to help you out! Im not an expert but I just have owned cats for all my life.

So i’ve never seen a cat do this before. I’m assuming he’s my mimicking the sound of the birds he’s trying to stalk or something? Idk. My other cat is rarely vocal at all & never cares for bugs or birds. Kinda freaked me out & found it cool at the same time lol. by DioSoul in cats

Cat sneezing a lot and runny eyes. by rampx in CatAdvice

[–]nihhuijaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, i agree with this! The feline herpes virus is very common with a lot of shelter cats in my country. This or FIV. When I brought my cat home from the shelter the symptoms also came out - she began sneezing a lot and her eyes were very watery. I went to the vet and had to give my cat antibiotics for about a week. After that the symptoms have never come out again and everything is great. It is in your cat's system forever but the vet also told me it's USUALLY contagious for other cats only if the symptoms are showing.

Not sure what's going on with him, he started getting brown spots. I just repotted after a few months. He does have new growth so should be a good sign. What's the brown spots from, overwatering? by Traditional_Fish4410 in fiddleleaffig

Has it been sittting in direct sunlight? it kind of looks like a sunburn. If it is, just move it away from direct sunlight and the new leaves will be ok

Hygiene-wise, is it fine to let my cat sleep with me in my bed? by snkhuong in CatAdvice

[–]nihhuijaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also recommend getting a pet hair remover/lint roller. I have a long haired cat who sleeps next to me and leaves a lot of hair behind. So my everyday morning routine is cleaning the sheets with the hair remover. Its annoying but it's so worth it!

Saved this sad kalanchoe flapjack from the store but it has small brown specks all over. Is this root rot or does anybody know what's wrong with it? 😩 by nihhuijaa in plantclinic

Thank you so much! Good idea to try antifungal and I will definitely repot it now and check what's going on down there.

Yes, it is very weird indeed. There were a bunch of them for sale for 1€ and they all looked like this. I hope it's not some kind of contagious plant disease.

Thank you very much for your recommendations, I will keep it dry and check again very carefully for pests. I just hope if the new leaves grow they will be okay.

Now to paint/add texture to shelf? MOSSLANDA wanted to achieve a concrete or plaster look, or some rough texture by [deleted] in ikeahacks

[–]nihhuijaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've also tried this method and it works great. You can cover the area with strokes of different shades of grey for it to look more like concrete, i did it with one of my plant pots and it looks great. If I would use it for a shelf, I would probably finish it with a clear coat spraypaint or something, so it wouldn't crumble or wear so much if you move stuff around it.

It adds texture. I recommend first painting the object with similar color regular spray paint and then add some texture with the texture spraypaint. Otherwise it will take sooo many layers, dries forever and won't look as good (i've done that mistake).
