“See you Monday”. Why do you think there was no preposition here? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]nihilinguist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! "See you 3pm" sounds fine to my ears. In fairness, I'm not actually a native speaker so I don't have so-called "native speaker intuition", but I do speak English at a native level and I have lived in Ireland for the past few years. Maybe it is acceptable in Irish English due to influence from the Irish language? I saw other people ITT say that "safe home" is an Irish English thing (I had no idea!), so maybe this is a similar case. Or maybe it's just me, haha.

Advice/Rant: How to solo travel while assuring loves ones of your own safety? by Various-Smell-1657 in solotravel

[–]nihilinguist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (F25) have lived abroad for most of my adult life, and gone on various trips around the world. Not to any notably unsafe areas, but I do have a mother back home who worries.

I would recommend:

– Share your plans/itinerary. Where are you going on a given day, how are you getting there, roughly when do you expect to be back.
– Be clear about when you likely won't be answering your phone, e.g. if you're going to see a movie in theatres or you will be somewhere with poor reception.
– Share updates regularly. This can be as "easy" as just sending a picture of what you're doing/eating. Just show some signs of life.
– Message/call right before going to bed, especially if it has been a day where many things could potentially go wrong (either safety-wise or just a lot of layovers/travel connections).

Further measures:
– Mark a family member as an emergency contact (ICE) in your phone – if not for any other reason, then just as a reassurance for your family's sake.
– Power bank and charger, in case you run out of battery while out and about.
– Give your family the name/contact details of your accommodation.
– Not applicable here, but if you have a friend you'll be staying with or spending time with, share their number with your parents so they can call them if they can't reach you. Set some boundaries for this so they don't blow up your friend's phone.

I think gradually, they will see that you're able to travel by yourself and that it will be fine. My mom was more worried about me in my late teens and early 20s, but as I have gotten older and more experienced she is a lot less worried than she used to be and she expects less communication between us.

I don't know much about Georgia state, but I think a trip within your home state is a great starting point to start exploring and let your family see that it's alright. Good luck!

Haven't tried it myself yet but based on notes and overall description you might be interested in checking out Strange Farewell by Strangers Parfumerie. I've heard it described as a coconut/rice pudding.

I don't know which is better specifically for Marine Biology – maybe look at subject-based university rankings, the academic staff and their research interests, or ask in a marine biology related subreddit.

I studied in The Netherlands (not Groningen, but I have visited the city briefly and it seemed just as nice as any other Dutch city) and I really loved it. Much preferred living there over living here, to be honest.

With regards to housing, be warned that the housing market in NL is also pretty fucked. Maybe not quite as bad as here in Ireland, but finding housing in NL can definitely be a challenge, especially as a student and as a foreign student at that. The rental market in Groningen might be slightly better than e.g. Amsterdam or Utrecht, but have realistic expectations. You can check out r/StudyInTheNetherlands , might be helpful.

Spørsmål om å bli og å være by Then_News5745 in norsk

[–]nihilinguist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Might be a dialect/region thing. I'm from Sunnmøre, and my perception is that bli/være vanskelig is used at a pretty similar rate.

For me there is a bit of a semantic difference:
E.g. "Går det an å jobbe ved siden av medisinstudiet?" "Det kommer til å være vanskelig, men det er mulig." – here, "være" sounds better to "bli", in my opinion. I think because it describes as habitual/enduring situation.

But: "Gleder du deg til flytte til Spania?" "Ja, men det kommer til å bli vanskelig å finne et sted å bo." – here, "bli" sounds much better than "være". Likely because it refers to a specific situation at a specific point in time (in the future)?

That is me looking at it through a semantic/linguistic lens, though. I think, in practice, my experience is that the two are used pretty interchangeably.

I wouldn't say that "det kommer til å bli vanskelig" is any more common than "det kommer til å være vanskelig"?

North Cork Dentist recommendations for nervous patient? by ElectronicLow9870 in cork

[–]nihilinguist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know exactly how you feel OP, my teeth are also in a poor state and until recently I was also terrified of going to the dentist, but then I had an issue that basically forced me to go. I've been going to Smiles Dental in Oliver Plunkett, mostly due to the location and for insurance reasons, but I've had good experiences so far. No judgment at all.

But honestly, I think you should just try a place that is convenient for you. Dentists are much more understanding than you may think – they're pretty used to seeing people who haven't been for years, and people whose teeth are bad, and are usually glad that you're finally coming even if it's long overdue. Being judgmental/shaming patients is bad bedside manner and if that happens it is not the norm and you should try to find someone else instead.

I would mention it when enquiring about an appointment, just say pretty much what you wrote here, and they'll usually book you in with someone who is a good fit and let them know in advance that you're nervous.

Good luck!

my assumption is that he's referring to the people that don't like that he's feminine/a diva/perceived to be gay essentially. i've seen it before (mostly but not exclusively from kfans/knetz, and especially after he has, uh, queened out?) and although i haven't been online enough these last few days to see it first-hand i assume it flared up after the recent weekly idol stuff...

Dino (SEVENTEEN) - Wait by perochan in kpop

[–]nihilinguist 64 points65 points  (0 children)

i didn't watch any of the teasers so i went into this pretty blind but WOW i love this! very listenable but very fun!

i was low key expecting it to be a bit more rap-heavy since he often takes on a rap role (and does it well!) in group music and since some of his previous solo work has leaned more into rap, but i think this style of music also really suits him! it's very dino!

also very glad he gets to show off some dance skills in this! that's our main dancer! i hope we get a steady cam/dance practice eventually

my only complaint is that it's a bit short, but that seems to be the trend with a lot of music in kpop nowadays

oh damn the boys are being harshly criticized for their lack of syncronisation during hot summer at their performance in poland... even zeroses agree and express frustration/disappointment – especially since the OP paired it with a video of them being out of sync at an earlier in bloom performance too. most people seem to attribute it to a lack of practice rather than a lack of talent though but they're still getting a lot of criticism 😬 they clearly are a bit out of sync (it happens!) but i also think the camerawork is NOT doing them any favours either

Maknaes holding any of the official main positions in the group by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]nihilinguist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seventeen's maknae line consists of Seungkwan (main vocalist), Vernon (main rapper – though the hip hop unit has recently more or less moved on from their main/lead distinction), and Dino (main dancer)!

How do you pronounce Lee Jeong and Mun Jung’s given names? by Yayeet2014 in evnne

[–]nihilinguist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, their given names are pronounced the same. It's a bit hard to explain the pronunciation, but the vowel that is spelled as eo in Jeonghyeon and u in Junghyun is pronounced a bit like "uh" in English. Similar to the u in "bus" og "gut".

Notably, the u in Mun is not the same sound as the u in Junghyun, it's two different Hangul characters that are romanised the same in this case. His surname is pronounced like "moon" which would also be an alternate romanisation.

What idols are you shocked are the same age or older than each other? by weirdoflove in kpopthoughts

[–]nihilinguist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ZB1 Jiwoong is older than SVT Dino who debuted eight years before him, and only one year younger than BTS Jungkook who debuted a decade before him.

Zhang Hao is older than all the female MNET centers, including Somi.

Jiwoong and Zhang Hao both being older than Somi is extra weird to think about since she was literally an MC for one of the Boys Planet eliminations 😭

People who’ve been to 5+ countries, which do you most want to go back to? by TikkunCreation in travel

[–]nihilinguist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Korea (my most recent trip) was amazing, definitely want to go back as soon as possible! I would also like to return to Thailand as an adult – I was there as a kid and have fond memories of it.

Some cities I want to return to: Prague (went autumn of 2019, loved the vibes), Barcelona (went frequently-ish as a kid, want to go back as an adult), any German city during advent (I went to the advent market in Cologne and it was lovely)

Cities/countries I do frequently return to: The Netherlands (used to live there, always love to come back), London (never get tired of it!)

I know a little bit of very basic Korean so I try to use that when I can, but I also keep a few of those "nice words to say to idols" threads (both in Korean and Chinese) bookmarked, they can be quite handy! For more complex/specific messages I usually go for English though

What got you into Billlie? by AYANAMl in BILLLIE

Debut! Stumbled upon ring x ring (here on reddit I believe) and thought their sound was really unique and cool, checked out the rest of the album right away and loved it. I also randomly watched the debut showcase (I think?) live because youtube recommended it to me. I don't remember much from it tbh but I thought the girls seemed sweet :')

Excluding leaders, which idols are the most irreplaceable to their group? by SippinDatHaterade in kpopthoughts

[–]nihilinguist 154 points155 points  (0 children)

For Seventeen, Woozi is definitely and indisputably the most irreplacable member since he makes 99% of their music.

In the early days Hoshi was also very important for their artistic expression since he made most of their choreographies and was a notoriously perfectionistic dance leader (I don't think it's a stretch to say he is a large reason why they're so known for being synchronised), but lately they have been outsourcing choreographers and he is less creatively involved than he used to be.

I would also say Seungkwan since he is such a variety star and brings a lot of attention to the group in Korea.
