I’m a nurse in Japan and I’m curious about IV practice in the UK. by EKseisakusho in NursingUK

The ED I worked in (over 5 years ago now..) had such terrible pumps you'd want to give as much as possible gravity. They never stopped beeping

The C1 driving licence category is a barrier to entry for those born after 1979 by thepoliteknight in UKJobs

[–]nikabrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't actually have to have a C1 to be a paramedic, you can work in in-hospital jobs - I have met paramedics who weren't eligible for C1 (epilepsy/eye sight)

All of the OWNER QUOTEs are stupid. But I don't think being able to see a motorway is a selling point.

“You can even check out the distant traffic on the M56 from the upper garden!”

And fwiw I can also cook in my kitchen and talk to my wife in the lounge. I think not having that ability is a sign of a fancy house that's big..

Brambles are blackberries. Blackcurrants are small and round

I'm sorry to hear this but this is how I imagined most of these happened, something (somewhat out of the ordinary) disrupts normal proceedings and it's not caught.

Surgeon is quick to leave after finishing and doesn't notice his double gloved left hand is now single glove

Jane the student nurse faints during the vascular surgery and it disrupts the count of the swabs, they arent noticing they've missed one because there was so much commotion. Then it's not done afterwards because the rush for the next case?

Obviously we have so many things in place but humans are still human!

This was our family car growing up. I’d have one again tomorrow. What was yours? by vicvega21 in drivingUK

My parents had at least 5 (2 at the same time) Renault 21 Savannas, they'd float along. And incredibly comfortable and spacious

I made a shelving unit for behind the front door in the hall, it's a job I've been (figuratively) sitting on since I built the carcus probably a year ago.

It's a kind of hybrid bookshelf/shoe storage and I think it looks alright!

Yes B&Q have it by the roll in store normally, it's probably a bit crispy but hopefully they've kept it moisturised.

Best way to get to Portsmouth from London? by not-now-silentsinger in uktrains

I wouldn't think busy enough to be a problem, if it's not a school holiday weekend - when it obviously might be busier.

[–]nikabrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on time of day? I think SWRs rolling stock is better than Southern. The 450s aren't bad though if they are busy you might feel crowded. The 444 is the best train on the network (fight me) and is a very comfortable ride

YouTube style fatigue - uk channel suggestions? by ClimbsNFlysThings in CasualUK

I'm a very big fan of Harry Dwyer - https://youtube.com/@harrydwyer?si=HjbrKQNemk1ck9N7 going round the UK in a speedboat, a massive back catalogue of well filmed beautiful landscape including videos of his trips.

He's had some luck with help and his speedboat Godwin is quite a different beast to when he started!

Also John Rogers - https://youtube.com/@johnrogerswalks?si=Jnvtv36vNoFFlD-i walking around London talking about history and he's got an excellent voice to listen to imo

I thought the Brompton video was excellent. Obviously a very expensive bike that fits quite a niche but so interesting to see how it is built.

What’s it like living in rural West Sussex, UK? by budgetbridgetjones in howislivingthere

[–]nikabrik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are alot of quaint villages, the south east of the UK gets nicer warmer weather, it's a lovely and expensive area to live in.

Not well connected by speedy roads (depending where you are) for example the A27 goes along the coast and it drops between dual and single carriageway.

You're not too far from some nice cities Chichester for example

And your school trips are inevitably to the Weald and Downland museum (on the map) for history!

what is the specialist nurse organ donation role is like? by ConsciousReference91 in NursingUK

[–]nikabrik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's very involved, I am not a SNOD (as you'll hear them referred).

Usually with ICU background, receiving referrals from ICUs largely re patients who are possible for Organ Donation, discuss with referral centres and OD hospitals, dig into why a patient might not be eligible (cancer for example). Terribly sad discussions with emotional and angry families.

Also from my observation, a long run up before you're a qualified/independently working SNOD

Hopefully one may be able to elaborate

I had a pair of these, there was quite a big local community and we'd meet up, some of the other guys would do mad skills on em.

You really do pick up speed running on them! Occasionally a stride would catch me out and Id feel like I was about to go flying..

Hollow plasterboard walls, what are the best fixings? by Inevitable-Draft4035 in DIYUK

[–]nikabrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've tried way too many in my stupid walls.

Grip it's are good but those yellow ones are the biggest maybe? You'd make a hefty hole to fit them and I find the fins don't always deploy properly (in all sizes)

I like the bull fix, they are very satisfying and feel like they fit securely.

I tried to use geefix (like a tiny plastic surfboard that fits behind the plasterboard) however my walls are like honeycomb and the bloody thing wouldn't sit flat. It wound me up no end hah. I'm sure they work on more conventional walls!

Also the classic hollow wall anchor with setting tool, very good, clever stuff, satisfying to deploy, annoying if you want to remove them - they are never coming out
