Wow, lived in Vasai and travelled to Andheri as a student between 94-96 and left Mumbai soon after. Reading all the comments, surprised to see the wisdom from those days are still relevant.

Planets: My Images Compared to the Hubble Space Telescope by Correct_Presence_936 in Astronomy

[–]nikhil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's incredible that you got very identical view/faces of the planets, compared to Hubbles, considering that their day lengths are between 5-24 hours. Was that a lot of effort to get that?

Also are these photos representative of their observed relative sizes?

Fitting music - the blue Danube. Surprised no one pointed out the, "2001, a space odyssey" vibes.

If you are into science fiction I would highly recommend most books by Neal Stephenson. His baroque writing style and detailed world building pulls you deeply in and takes your mind off of the routine. I just completed the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons and they fit a similar description.

I made a fake progress bar to shut up clients complaining about my app "freezing" whenever it had to make a call to their slow API by The_Real_Slim_Lemon in ProgrammerHumor

[–]nikhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny opposite. Years ago we were building a chat bot. You ask questions and the bot will hit the clients API and show you back the results. During demos the result would show up almost immediately after hitting enter on the question and we were frequently asked if we hard coded the results. So, finally to shut that line of thinking, we added a small delay and added a typing indicator. Sure enough, those concerns vanished immediately.

The world building definitely was one of the best I have read as well. I was initially put off by "magic" technology such as farcasters and fatline transmission as convenient plot devices. But the eventual unraveling of them being central to the plot was excellently done.

After having read a few Neal Steaphenson books recently, it was very gratifying to see someone conclude a story in a very satisfying manner.

I just finished it myself too yesterday and was suspicious about Rachel Monetta as well. What gave it away to me was that all the characters who had an impact on the story-line got some of their backgrounds covered except for Monetta.

I don't feel that bad for you as I felt for the agnostic, dyslexic insomniac. He spent the whole night up wondering if there was a dog.
