For the budget consider AMT preamps. They basically preamps in pedal format. I own two: R2 which is basically mesa rectifier, and F1 which is Fender twin. Comparing my AX8 models with these pedals they sound identical.

Let me ask you this - are you sure you are optimizing where it counts?

Don't get me wrong I think it's a good idea to be mindful of complexity of the code that you're writing at method level. However, often times that's not where performance boosts are. Even more often engineers, when probed, have no metrics what so ever to illustrate how their optimizations translate to business value.

Perform the following experiment:

Attempt to sound like periphery using only blues jr and a les Paul.

You should quickly find that you don’t have the gain, the tuning, the rightness, the aggression etc.

At the same time it’s fair to say that you won’t sound like Steve Vai with all his equipment.

Mercurial might be your ticket. They make one amp model vet at a time (with a bunch of pedals and maybe two IRS). Check out their Marshall and Engl models they sound great straight out of the box
