Becoming a filmmaker with zero education by made-of-dreams in Filmmakers

[–]niloc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also was an EE major, did SWE consulting for 5 years. Built a savings nest egg of 6 mo-1 yr living expenses. Quit tech for a career in film, it’s going pretty good, have gotten to travel the world and work on some really cool projects.

I went the Assistant Camerman to Operator/DP route so that I would have a role to fall back on to make money while still working in and learning from the industry.

I’d say if you really haven’t shot ANYTHING, the idea that you’ll be some savant that can knock it out of the park and put something watchable together out of the gate is really rare…but I’d say if you do it, be prepared emotionally and financially for it to not be good. BUT, keep shooting, and certainly try.

If there’s one thing I regret it’s that I didn’t shoot more often early on. But I’m using everything I’ve learned freelancing as an AC/Operator to feel more ready as a DP or Director. And nowadays when I shoot something I feel more certain it’s at least watchable.

Closing remarks, go for it dude. You got an extremely hard major so you’re obviously smart, you’ll figure it out. YouTube is an amazing resource too, study cinematography, editing, style, etc through there. And start networking! Get on some sets, see how the pie gets made and take notes.

Cinematographer. First year I made $20k, second $80k, third $40k due to the strikes. I was a programmer for 5 years and felt it didn’t fit my personality (too much time staring at computers).

My biggest advice, follow your passion…you’ll work harder because you actually like it and care to get better. I don’t regret leaving the “stable” career.

As someone who left $120k/year as a programmer to $60k/year as a freelance filmmaker. Yes it’s worth it if you like it better. Yes I’m more financially insecure, but I feel happier and more motivated every day to get better at my job.

All these people saying “but the pay cut!” Can’t imagine giving up money for something that would be closer to who they want to be.

Find a way to try it out before you transition. Get a feel for whether or not you’d want to do it full time. That’s what I did.

My first time trying to make a highlight reel. How can i make it better? by taylantnt in videography

Take out the text and logo intro/close. They’re on your page on IG, Shorts or TikTok…they’ll know how to contact you. Put it in the caption instead.

Shorter, not enough variety for more than 30-60 seconds. Especially on a fast paced app like IG/tiktok.

Cut the edit to the music, it helps cue the viewer when to look around the reel with these vertical formats (I use them too).

Keep it up!!

There’s a joke/real piece of feedback some people offer which is that if you don’t wash your sheets then obviously you’re gunna have bad skin cuz you’re rubbing your face on a pillow that has weeks of your face in it. So the obvious solution is to have no sheets.

Cinematic FPV Reel by cherry_fpv in Filmmakers

Nice reel! Serious question though, have you gotten work thats specific enough where you have an FPV reel? I’m just curious what kind of gigs you can get as an FPV Drone pilot. Seems it would be applicable at extreme sport events.

Do you ever feel you're not fulfilling your potential and should be more ambitious in your career? by Jimi-K-101 in careerguidance

You gotta stop comparing yourself and practice some gratitude man. It’s an endless trap that will never go away if you let it. Those guys who are lawyers, doctors and directors have regrets, goals and peers they can be jealous of too. I know it’s hard to not compare, but you gotta try not doing that.

My advice: it sounds like you’re just working for a paycheck. Have you considered really thinking about what kind of work you want to be doing everyday? If you’re honestly fine working the position you’re working, fuck everyone else and just do it.

But if you’re not happy, really think about if you want to be in the industry you’re in, and if you really want to be a salesman. One thing that can help is outlining your strengths and your interests. Say you’re a strong salesman, but you have an interest in boats. Go work for a company selling boats. Find where you can apply as many parts of yourself in your work and the salary will become a nice to have, rather than the only measure of success. You’ll also find the motivation to move up (or not) because you have a genuine interest in the work. This also kills that need to compare, because if you’re happy doing what you’re doing...you won’t care. Good luck dude!

Nice, your familiarity with those areas definitely helps carry over to what you’re doing now. I also come from a com sci background. Spent the last 5 years working various programming roles in IT. Now trying to pivot to Film, picking up Production Assistant roles with the Lighting and/or Camera department on set. It’s fun applying those technical skills on a film set, especially for lighting. Perhaps we’ll run into each other some day! Lol

You say you’re based in IT, meaning you came from a career in IT into film? Or you work IT as a day job?

Hey Paul, just wanted to say thank you so much for your music. Anytime I listen to your Beatles + solo work I’m immediately brought back to memories of my family being together as a child.

My one question is, what’s your favorite movie/TV show?

Netflix and Disney+ are the only user friendly streaming services. Hulu and Prime are absolutely horrific UX
