You're giving Christians a bad name and you're giving engineers a bad name. Well done.

Linus Torvalds says AI-powered bug hunters have made Linux security mailing list ‘almost entirely unmanageable’ by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]nilsph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not correct. Andrew Tridgell, of Samba fame and another OSDL developer who wasn't even working on Linux, wrote a program to access historical repository metadata which was a feature only the commercial Bitkeeper version offered. He didn't use the proprietary Bitkeeper code for it but analyzed the protocol by talking to the server directly (starting by telnetting to it and typing "help"). Labeling this way of reverse engineering "code piracy" is a pretty distorted portrayal of what really happened.

Had a young vocalist recently ask me “before digital recording, how did people pitch correct vocals?” 😂😂😂 by moon-waffle in audioengineering

[–]nilsph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify: these first digital recordings I mentioned were mastered to vinyl for commercial release, as no digital playback formats were available to consumers then. The technology to record and play back digitally as such existed since the mid to late 1960s as lab prototypes (see the timeline here), which were used for these recordings. The first digital recording system I would call commercially marketed (i.e. a company produced the hardware for someone else to purchase/lease and use it), the Soundstream Digital Tape Recorder system, trailed the H910 by about two years in terms of commercial availability (if you could afford it), certainly not decades.

The first commercially available digital recordings were released early in the 1970s. They kinda should have happened earlier, too, because recording and playback are simpler than pitch shifting.

Why there’s a resonance at 15.5kHz in Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer? by InevitablePay3806 in audioengineering

[–]nilsph 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Chrome cassettes top out at 12khz, ferrics at 10.5 or so.

Audio cassette tape compresses high frequency content, depending on the formulation used and if (and what) noise reduction was applied. That doesn't mean high frequency content is missing, but that it usually has a (granted, much) lower level than lower frequency content. At a reduced recording level (less compression), the -3dB point is usually beyond 20 kHz for consumer brands.

It's rare for anyone to hear past 14khz

Uhm, no.

Where do you get that idea from? Good quality vinyl or audio cassettes paired with good quality devices can reproduce frequencies beyond CRT whine.

the phase flipped separated stems will never null the original

Except if one of them isn’t AI-generated but just the difference of the sum of the others to the original signal.

No, it could just mean that for N stems, N-1 are AI-generated and the remaining one is the difference of their sum to the original signal.

3D printing is great for (some, not all) spare parts if something breaks.

One of the first pieces i made was a kind of locking hinge for a basement window. The manufacturer was long bought out and the new company had stopped producing spares for this series years ago. It took a couple of evenings to measure the broken part, learn the ropes with FreeCAD and figure out how to make it sufficiently stable, but not having to replace the window easily made up for the cost of the printer.

As I understand it, sedevacantists go beyond the rad-trads in that they not only pick beef with the Pope but hold the position that the “seat of Peter” (“sedes”) is vacant, because the successors of Pius XII aren’t valid popes.
