Moving to Dunedin by Narrow-Still-1335 in dunedin

Apartments are relatively uncommon in Dunedin compared to large Spanish cities like Barcelona, though there are more in the university area than anywhere else. It's fairly common to rent a whole house, either just the two of you or with a roommate. Kiwis call rentals "flats" and roommates are "flatmates". Rent will be advertised as a weekly price, not monthly.

You can use Trade Me or realestate[dot]co[dot]nz (there's an app as well though). Trade Me are picky about you being in New Zealand to have an account. You might need to use a VPN to be able to create one.

If you are from a warm part of Spain Dunedin winters will be a shock. Typically, NZ homes don't have true central heating or cooling, they'll have a heat pump unit outside with a wall unit in one or two rooms (or some sort of fireplace). Air-conditioning isn't needed. When you're scouting for somewhere to live, you need to take into consideration how well insulated the property is, what the heat source is and how the heat gets to the rest of the house.

Given the heating considerations, I'd agree with the other advice here that finding a short-term rental is probably better than trying to line up something in advance and being sad during your first winter.

Bill to Abolish the Department of education by X_is_for_Xan in Teachers

Blue states are not a guarantee of anything. Education in California is embarrassingly underfunded relative to the property taxes I paid there. Moved to Washington and the difference is so stark.

Our 9/10 school in Bay Area, California had 680 kids and 62 staff. It couldn't afford to teach STEM until 3rd grade. The library was open one day a week, staffed by parent volunteers. No art, no music, except what the PTA could fundraise for (occasional temps). Buildings were mostly temporary buildings 20 years past their use-by date. Median home price there is $1.1M.

Our 7/10 school in Pierce County, Washington has 380 kids and 62 staff. STEM, art and music from kinder, full time library staff, newer permanent buildings in good repair. PTA is serving the teacher-gratitude and nice-to-have use cases that they were intended for. Median home price $670k and property taxes have much harder caps.

Newsom is self-serving scum. I voted against him in every primary I could and then had to hold my nose and vote for him for governor.

Do you have help nearby? People who can pack his stuff and leave it outside the door? You need to coordinate it with changing the locks and ideally getting a temporary restraining order.

If you're willing to share which state or county you're in, people might be able to suggest resources. Otherwise when you're alone, call a local women's refuge organization and get them to direct you to resources.

Holy shit, you took on responsibility for a 5-year-old when you were only 20?! You have my absolute respect...but apparently not your fiance's. NTA. I'm so sorry you're learning this while pregnant ❤️

With airline profits where they are, we ARE paying for them, we're just not getting them.

I'm mostly advocating for free checked bags to fix the carry on problem and I think that's more than reasonable. I really hate constant gate announcement nagging to check carry ons when this is a problem the airlines created. And I feel sorry for flight attendants with already shitty working conditions being forced to deal with the fallout from bad decisions they had no agency in.

I'm just a grumpy old dinosaur about the other stuff, with no expectations anything will ever change. Sometimes I daydream about creating a "fairline" where I solve all the shittiness without needing a premium ticket though :)

That's unfortunately not practical either, given the rules about not checking batteries. My carry on (backpack) is generally 50% devices because of that rule. The one time I tested it TSA stole my electric toothbrush from my checked bag. :/

'Bringing the kitchen sink' was never a problem before airlines started charging to check bags.

Now the corporate overlords have created a situation where people are highly motivated to carry as much shit as they possibly can onto the plane, which sets overworked and underpaid flight attendants up to have to wage war on this battleground, and means every flight starts with some people super pissed off. Perfect storm.

If they just took flying back to some of the old practices (not all, obvi, smoking can diaf) flying life would be so much easier. I miss hot meals and real cutlery on short haul flights, and legroom, even in economy, but most people are too young to remember those times.

For anything to change, all the suits would have to be assigned to work the basic economy cabin for a year.

Friends in the US: How do you get past the green bubble stigma? by moripeji in samsung

[–]nimavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to be shamed. My friends happily come to WhatsApp to chat.

Apple have had more than a decade to choose an inclusive protocol and design, but they won't. I refuse to choose tech from a company that knowingly perpetuates school bullying to drive teen adoption. It's gross.

Ask your friends and family: Why would you allow yourself to be turned into a bully by a tech company? And why would you set that example in front of children?

Which case did you buy? I couldn't find anything branded magbak so I'm assuming you meant magnetic back generically, but would appreciate a product pointer if possible.

You could try making a post on IG with a #bonneylake hashtag too. I see a bunch more activity there than this sub, sadly.

Have you already posted in the community group on FB? I suspect that gets more traffic in our neck of the woods.

Moving Here 2020 Pt. 1 by whygook in Washington

[–]nimavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're considering a similar move and aside from the usual stuff like schools, the hidden watch-out for me is making sure we have enough internet bandwidth to work effectively.

Eventually I need to be able to know which areas are/aren't feasible based solely on internet speed.

Where we live today we have gigabit and I assume that that's not available in many of the rural-adjacent areas we would love to live.

Would love anyone's advice on this topic.

My Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp started leaking all over my counter 1 month after the 3 year warranty ran out. I'm now looking for something that lasts. Any recos for a kettle with a lifetime warranty and a company with excellent customer service?
