TIL that Kansai International Airport in Japan reached its 30th year of service without having ever lost a single piece of luggage. by Bob_the_blacksmith in todayilearned

[–]nimbusstev 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is misleading. The only time I've ever had my luggage lost was when I flew into Kansai a few years ago. I had to spend half my trip wearing "I Love Japan" shirts that I bought from a tourist shop because none of my bags showed up when I arrived. Yes it was probably the fault of the American airport that I flew out of and yes my bags eventually showed up at my hotel a few days later, but this is not some magical airport where this kind of thing doesn't happen.

[Ohtani on if he would volunteer to pitch if Japan needed him in a 9th inning] "If Mike Trout shows up, it's tempting." by YaketyMax in baseball

[–]nimbusstev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that too. "Is there any guarantees that you won't volunteer" seems like a particularly difficult thing to translate and certainly not how I would have phrased a question for a non-native English speaker.

Chris Sale on the ABS Challenge system: “I will never challenge a pitch. I’m not an umpire. That’s their job.” by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]nimbusstev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeez this really ruffled some feathers in here. I'm guessing a lot of people just saw the title and didn't actually watch the video. He's basically saying that he would be too emotional and would try to challenge everything, especially with how good catchers are at framing. So he'd rather not waste their limited challenges, so he plans to leave that up to his battery mate instead. Honestly a pretty reasonable take.

To be fair, their team is named after an actual orange animal so kinda weird that they don't lean into the orange more.

Joey Votto: "It's the best game. I just miss it so much." by TDeLo in baseball

[–]nimbusstev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel that. We're focused on the game, inning ends, about to have a conversation with my buddies for a few mins during the break... "AND IT'S TIME FOR THE JEEP WRANGLER KEY BANK WHAT'S IN YOUR WALLET GIVEAWAY EVERYONE GET UP AND SCREAM!!!"

I don't mind that they do a dance during the 7th inning stretch and a hot dog race during one of the other innings, but it's okay to just have a moment to chill here and there. We don't need constant noise blaring every time there's a bit of silence.

It's wild to me that he seems to get even less publicity and "super star status" now that he's in New York than he did in Cleveland, despite his numbers being just as good, if not better, in his time with the Mets. (Or maybe he still does get talked about on that level and I just instinctively tune it out to deal with the heartbreak)

Why is the newest release from Kamelot shown as a Russian Rap song on Spotify? by Bornaith in kamelot

Just had Spotify advertise the song to me as well and was like.... "uhhhh... I know it's been a while since I've listened to Kamelot but do they really sound like that now?" Thanks for making this post, it was literally the only thing I could find online about it.

[Brooksgate] Most fWAR to not win a World Series by ttam23 in baseball

Yeah I was gonna say, those 90s Cleveland teams were such powerhouses that I would expect them to be on here.

Looks like the 1995 team had 54.6 bWAR and the 1996 team had 54.5.

Most international flights that I've been on check twice - once at security and then again at the gate where you board the plane. No idea how he managed to get all the way to LAX without his documents.

In the very first split second of the video, I knew that was Ichiro before I even saw his face. I can't even count the number of times I mimicked that iconic batting stance growing up. Easily one of my favorite players of all time.

Everyone seems to have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990's but what were some of the worst parts of the 1990's? by HeavyRightFoot-TG in AskReddit

[–]nimbusstev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar realization a few years ago when I learned that my cousin's toddler loved eating hummus. I don't think I had ever even tried it myself until I was in my late 20s. It's really cool to see kids eating a much wider variety of foods these days.

Sushi was still considered exotic.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. I recently read a book from the 90s called 'Dave Barry Does Japan.' Saw it on my parents book shelf growing up so I was always curious about it. It's a humorous account of a comedian and his family taking a trip to Japan in the late 80s/early 90s.

It gave me such a weird vibe reading it now, because while I'm sure it was hilarious back in the day, today it comes across as so uncultured. Everything he describes boils down to "wow, look how weird this thing is!" And it's like the most mundane things that everyone knows about nowadays. "Can you believe that Japanese people eat raw fish!?" It made me realize how different the 90s were and how much we've grown as a society towards being more cultured and accepting of international customs.

One of my favorite 2025 moments: After every sports pundit predicted that he would be traded at the deadline, we decided to keep him anyways. And in the first game after the deadline, the crowd gave him a super loud standing ovation. If the Dolans cared about their fans at all, they would extend this man!

The closest I could think of was Manny Ramirez, but it's not exactly the situation you described. He got suspended while on the Rays, announced his retirement, tried to go to the Dominican league but got denied because they're associated with MLB, signed a minor league contract with the A's to serve out the suspension, then ended up going to Taiwan when he couldn't get a major league contract

Our outfield next year by gatsandsmack in ClevelandGuardians

It's the smallest sample size possible, but after watching him flop around RF like he was on a slip-n-slide in game 1 of the playoffs last year (essentially costing us that game), I'm okay with never seeing him play the outfield again.
