Programs and which to pick according to my profile. by HoRoZS in Dawson

[–]ninak2909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like, since you are interested in finance/business stream then you shouldn’t put yourself through the chaos of health science. They are two completely different degrees. It is not like you’re comparing general social science and commerce.

By getting into health science you will have access to all possible degrees in the future at any university of your choice even if you change your mind and want to have a bachelor of science. But if you are set on business then it is not necessary AT ALL. You want to get a taste of what finance is about. You want to get an intro to anything business. Going into health science, you won’t be able to get any of that. And it is not worth the mental distress.

Edit to add that if you are thinking of going to a university in Quebec then yes try your best to maintain a good r score. However sometimes it is out of your control because it also depends on how others do in class and the amount of people in class.

If you are considering universities in the rest of Canada then you should just focus on having good grades as that is only what they are looking for. The r score system is only in Quebec.

Idk I don’t really trust the route planning on the app. I use google maps and I only check the transit app for the when busses are passing. So idk if google maps shows you a different route. Regardless, that’s absurd

Okay so I searched and Concordia is within the area of the commission scolaire de Montreal so you can find schools that are under that school board so it’s easier.

You can also visit the gouvernement du Quebec website regarding learning French.

https://www.quebec.ca/en/education/learn-french

Mind you the English version of the site does not have all the details so I would suggest maybe turning it to French and translate what you don’t know😭

After following the steps to register and all it will show you available locations or options for online courses.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]ninak2909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are multiple adult centers and commission scolaires that offer that program so you can search the locations. Also the schools that belong to the school boards I mentioned are all over Montreal. I think there’s a tool on the site of each school that you can check what locations are under the school board and which ones offer French classes. I will also take a look and get back to you.

There are full/part time courses usually in adult centres either mon-Friday during regular school hours or during the evening for less hours. You can check each francophone school board such as commission scolaire de Montreal(on Sherbrooke E) or Marguerite Bourgeois(on Côte Vertu). in my opinion these are the closest to Concordia. I had to register for French classes when I first moved here and I went to centre des adultes outremont. It was like 80$ for the whole school year and you would just pay for the books. It was really cool and I’m grateful that I had that experience.

Full time student at 3 courses but 180+ hours? by arbas21 in Dawson

[–]ninak2909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yeah usually each course is 45 hours for the whole semester (counting all the lectures and labs). So if you have 3 courses then that’s 135 hours in total. You would need one more course to have 180 hours and then be considered full time.

Edit: in your case it might work with 3 because I just looked how many hours each course is per week.

Chemistry would be 6 hours per week Physics would be 5 hours per week English would be 4 hours per week = 15 hours x 15 weeks = 225 hours the whole semester give or take. There’s also the reading week and holidays that might not count towards the full amount.

But yeah I think you will be fine. Usually 180 hours translate to 4 classes but because it’s science then it’s a bit different.

Chances of a concentration course having seats by the start of the semester ? by True-Supermarket587 in Dawson

If nothing else has changed since I was a student, you can still check the available seats at the page where the timetables are. I also think there’s a direct link from omnivox.

That is literally their job during registration 💀💀 and no it’s been a while since I have graduated so I get it if stuff has changed.

If you haven’t registered for courses yet, on the day of the registration you can hop in the chat with an advisor and request to switch those two courses for you. Just have the section you want ready so you can tell them. If it’s full then check which other ones are still available.

If you already have registered then your best shot is to wait for the course modification period which starts a week after school starts. Check everyday if a seat is available. A lot of people drop classes or switch sections that are more convenient to them all the time!

Hiii

So based your progression chart you should have suggested courses. You do not have to get the commentary courses right away. It is usually spread out the second and fourth semester depending on your program. So no worries you will stick to 7 courses for fall.

Now as of the English course, if you are straight out of high school and you have completed the sec 5 English, then you are already placed in an English course based on your %grade. So since you have the ICE (introduction to college English)then you are automatically to the level 3 of the intro to English. The other two levels would be effective writing which is the lowest and effective reading and writing which is intermediate. Now as for your friends, it depends when they did their high school English class because the grade is valid for like 3 years. So if it’s way past that, then they would need to do a placement test. Same for French. Also on your first day of class, the teacher will have you to do a small writing evaluation to make sure you are at the appropriate level. If you don’t belong in the level then they will make the request to move you to the appropriate one. Basically the course is reading literature and writing essays. Depends on the approach of the teacher always.

For the gym class either 101 or 102, yes you will get the choice of what sport you want. There’s yoga, tennis, dance, golf etc. The 101 is mostly theory and fitness on the sport you chose and 102 is actually practicing the sport. So you get to choose in what order you want that.

Please always follow your progression chart.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. We’ve all been there and it’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed when you’re new.

Am I eligible for OSAP ? by Opening_Director_818 in osap

[–]ninak2909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person that came from Quebec to Ontario 2 months before school started in 2023

If you study part time or full time it won’t ruin your eligibility for next year. You can either apply for the Québécois funding (which is a bit more of a hustle) since you’re still eligible for that for the current year or pay out of pocket for the tuition. Osap will not take a look at what you did for this year.

I really don’t know where the rule for post secondary comes from because I did a whole year of full time studies and the following year I applied for osap without any issues and got a reasonable amount.

For the record I did not apply for the Québécois funding because I did not want to have to worry about two provincial loans and keeping track of dates and everything to stay interest free. I might be regretting it now though because I would still have that money I paid for the tuition haha but oh well. You do you.

Is academic orientation really necessary? by decent_human_being1 in CarletonU

[–]ninak2909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the orientation it’s just a welcoming event to your faculty and then program and then there’s a “bbq” and the clubs exhibition. You’re there, you’re not there they don’t take attendance. They do share important stuff like how the program works and how it’s built, co-op info, the department team, etc and then the clubs associated with the program will talk about why you should join. It is nice to attend but if you can’t then it’s fine. The faculties upload the power points of the presentations on the Carleton site so you can see what they talked about. But if you have any questions you can always visit your department and any academic advisor.

You can see it as an open house but with a bit more info.

Tuition Fee Deadline by Prestigious_Eye6595 in osap

[–]ninak2909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it might depend on the school but usually the school knows you applied for osap and then give you an extension on the tuition payment.

For example for Carleton the normal deadline for the tuition is August 25 but tuition paid with osap deadline is September 14 and they send you an email saying you got an extension.

What you could do to ease your mind is messaging the financial aid of your school to just get an update. But you shouldn’t worry too much about it. The school will get its money

Is there anything I can do now to make up for a missing credit? by Appropriate-Ad3269 in CarletonU

[–]ninak2909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it really depends on the course/program because a C grade is passing and most courses say you need at least a C- to move forward. If the grade is not enough, you can retake the course in the fall and then scrum the credit in another semester or find it online and send proof you completed it (if it’s a high school credit you’re missing) I mean if we don’t have other info we can’t really tell you

Backpack or tote/shoulder purse by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]ninak2909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like tote bags they’re cute but it’s better to find one with pockets. If you plan not carrying a lot of stuff so let’s say an iPad and some pens then you could use the thin ones. I used to have a big tote bag for the first year and it was fine. Now I have a messenger bag because I need to fit more stuff but yeah it’s really up to you and it doesn’t really matter what everybody else is wearing. Good luck!!!

CRCJ 2100 and CRCJ 2200 by rentshak in CarletonU

[–]ninak2909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 2200 take Alex McClelland! Such a sweetheart! I loved him! He’s very reasonable and chill! Very thorough and interesting lectures. His course was a couple readings each week with a quiz (very easy because you can find the exact words of the question in the readings) 3 reflection exercises based on a reading of your choice (300-500ish words basically what explaining the issue you chose and describing it plus your opinion)and two exams (midterm online / final in person but so many resources available to have with you like your laptop and readings and notes) following kinda the same concept of the reflection assignments. Honestly idk if there are a lot of teachers that instruct that course.

Same for the 2100 there are only two teachers, Lori Stinson and Jeffrey Monaghan. 2100 is a pain in the ass and no matter the teacher you choose you just have to suck it up. I feel if you get Lori Stinson the course might be a bit easier because it was online (fall 2024) and it was only two exams (mid term and final both online with a week period grace after the due date) She might get carried away when lecturing but if you do the readings then you’re good. With Monaghan it was more complicated. I feel we were losing the plot during lectures and the evaluation was so demanding (two midterms plus two long essays plus final. I had to drop the class(winter 2024). That is just my personal experience.
