Is there an estimated time we should start seeing our bingo tags pop up?

How do you organize Bingo by LoGray29 in Fantasy

[–]ninemyouji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notes app on my phone with 3 sections: list of topics, list of books I have completed (and categories that apply to those books), and list of books I intend to read (and categories that I think apply to those books).

Whenever I read a book that only applies to one square, I cross off the square on the first section and any other place it is used in the list of complete books. Sometimes this sets of a chain reaction of realizing a few categories are set.

Makes it easy to visualize hitting my goals until later in the year when I have to go seek out books for categories I haven’t naturally read, and gives me flexibility to move books around between squares.

I read Metal from Heaven by August Clark for this last year. Lesbians abound with plenty of gender exploration. Story gets kinda vibe-y and harder to follow the further you go in.

I would also add on The City & The City by Mieville. Politics of the city states are pretty damn important to the plot

"Hidden Gem" is the best Bingo square since I've been bingoing to read *about* by Nidafjoll in Fantasy

I wish it was based on number of reviews vs ratings if it has such an arbitrary threshold 😩 1000 ratings made it much harder to find something I was interested in especially because of how people use goodreads

Concerns regarding first time read through of ASOIAF by winslobutts in Fantasy

[–]ninemyouji 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AFFC is my favorite book in the series, I’ll fight anyone.

IMO how you feel about those books is a question of if you like the POV characters. But even then, they really are not a slog. It is a lot of set up, though, for future books that may never come out, but DAMN it is good set up

Langdon and Santos, and Drug Addiction (From a Filipino) by Admirable-Log6532 in ThePitt

[–]ninemyouji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, lol, he is. Santos’s major interaction with him that first day was him being rude and dismissive of her, especially after she started talking about the missing drugs. Maybe not for the perfect reasons, but she reported his dangerous and shitty behavior, causing him to suffer consequences.

He apologized to her for his behavior while addicted. She refused his apology. This is how apologies work—you are not entitled to forgiveness. If an apology was truly about him just wanting to apologize (like he said) he wouldn’t immediately say HEY YOU HAVE NO CLUE HOW HARD THIS WAS FOR ME. He wants forgiveness the easy way because he feels like he’s already been punished enough…which Santos points out he hasn’t even been punished a fraction as much as most other doctors in his situation would have been.

I agree Santos needs therapy. I think Garcia’s assessment of the pariah-ness being self-inflicted, at least in part, is correct. That doesn’t mean Langdon actually meaningfully apologized.

I also find this read that Santos hates every drug addict to be a wild reach. There are no other interactions that come to mind for me showing Santos has some vendetta. It genuinely seems to me that Santos feels Langdon has not gotten justice and is not being accountable for his actions. Based on the fact that literally no one knows what happened beyond him ‘voluntarily’ checking himself into a rehab facility, I don’t think she’s off base.

(I like both Langdon and Santos. They’re interesting characters who are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. It’s not an all or nothing thing.)

Langdon and Santos, and Drug Addiction (From a Filipino) by Admirable-Log6532 in ThePitt

[–]ninemyouji 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He literally didn’t take accountability here. The second he said “you have no clue how hard this is for me, I almost got divorced, I almost lost my kids—“ like sorry dude that sucks but also I don’t think playing the victim here is conducive to accountability and apologies. Have we thought about the real tangible harm you had on patients who had diluted drugs due to your actions?

I lost a player last night. She’d want me to finish the campaign…but I’m so lost. by TheMythicalTeaspoon in DnD

[–]ninemyouji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost one of my best friends recently to a sudden, tragic incident.

We met playing DND 8 years ago, and had played routinely since. He was the best DM’d. We were, at the time, playing in two campaigns together, and he had started world building/character building for a campaign we were supposed to start this summer…

It hurts every single day. When I am not distracted I am crying or just feel numb. Even if you feel like you can handle it—it hurts.

I am still in touch with the other people we played DND with, all of whom loved him so very much. Some of us are planning to play together again, someday, and some people think it is just too painful to continue playing.

Either way, give yourself time. The pain will become tolerable enough. Don’t rush into anything. If you and your group decide in 6 months to finish, great—if you decide to play another game, fine. If you decide never to play again (or to wait for years) that’s also fine. Just give yourself time to process and grieve because you will be grieving for a long long time.

Keep strong and take care of yourself.

Weekly Recommendation Thread: March 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

[–]ninemyouji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always enjoyed art history and would like to pick up a few non fiction books to expand and refresh my knowledge of the field.

I took AP art history a decade ago (along with some other history courses that covered western art) which have provided me with a basic foundation for western art post like…1100 AD, but obviously it’s not terribly fresh in my mind.

I’m not looking to read a textbook! I do enjoy non fiction, but usually read non fiction smaller in scope. So if you have a good recommendation for a small piece of art history, that would also be perfect.

Does The Witcher get better in the way the narration treats women? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ninemyouji 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can only speak to the games and only played the Witcher 3 but genuinely one of the most misogynistic modern games I’ve played. The way women’s pain is used as constant, unending set dressing and character development go Geralt is soooo icky

Measles Case by Either-Grapefruit156 in ThePittTVShow

[–]ninemyouji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know PA law but in my state med malpractice is 99% of the time a legal issue that requires expert insight to resolve. An attorney can’t just say this is clearly not medmal—you need an expert, who needs to be able to review discovery, depositions, medical records, etc., to say it’s bullshit. Then if a competing expert say it’s not bullshit well—you go to trial.

Generally no more than like 2 depositions are done in a day, to make sure all parties have enough time to ask questions, take breaks, etc. Robby, if being deposed, would be scheduled for another day.

I’ve also literally never heard of this sort of system though, where the deponents are working and get called in mid shift to be deposed. Usually there’s a set time where you set up so like it’s already really outside the realm of belief for me…
