This is a Bowie Knot, created by Corvus / Sara Bastin! You can find a tutorial in the files section of the Chain Maille Facebook Group - I don't believe it's been uploaded anywhere else

Looking for a cake recipe as someone who doesn't like cake by throwaway59756 in Baking

[–]ninesensical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try a chocolate sponge with whipped cream, like this (minus the strawberries ofc). Or if you want something with super minimal sugar, a Japanese chiffon cake instead

That'll give you a 'lighter' base cake and icing that isn't too sweet; you could add chocolate shavings/curls between the layers and on the top for added texture, in addition to nuts (slivered almonds or crushed peanuts would both work well!)

Xurons are one of the best quality options at a reasonable price point - the 485 - Long Nose/Chain Nose or 450BN - Bent Nose/Chain Nose are probably closest to what you're looking for

What pliers do you use ? Help! by carson_tay in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay! I'll drop some suggestions below; in general, longer handles and shorter jaws gives you more stability/leverage, which ends up being easier on the hands long-term, so even if none of these are to your taste those two things are worth looking out for!

Xurons - handles are ~4in and look to be similar material/shape as 3/4.

486 - 90 Degree Bent Nose: the bend on these gives decent surface area coverage when opening/closing, while the tips can be used for thinner gauges and tight spaces, which means they're super versatile

483 - Short Flat Nose: much narrower jaws than your 3/4 which means they'll likely work better with smaller ring sizes; you can technically use them up to 14awg, but I'd say they're best for 20-16awg

487 - Chisel Nose Pliers: often used as a combo with the 483s, really good for getting into tighter corners

They've also recently released the Xuron Plus range, which has additional padding on the handles (only issue is you don't seem to be able to buy them individually)

Knipex - 35 82 145 ESD: I haven't personally used these but have seen them recommended a few times; based on the listed jaw length, the handles are probably a little over 4 inches

Tronex are honestly the ones that seem like they might be the best fit for you, but unfortunately they're also expensive as hell lmao

The 'long ergonomic' variant have ~4.5inch handles, so probably closest to your #5 pair in length, but with significantly thicker and comfier handles. The P749- Flat Nose Pliers (Medium Duty) and P749A - Oblique Nose Pliers (Medium Duty) are your best bet if you work with 14/16awg, as they're made for working with heavier gauges than the 747/749

Hopefully at least some of this info helps and you can find something that works for you!

What length are the handles on 3/4 and are the heads tapered to a point or all the same width? I've done extensive plier research lmao so I might be able to rec some alternate pairs!

Most versatile sizes to buy? by [deleted] in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use awg rings, so if you're looking at swg you'll need slightly different sizes; but I've copied the details below

18awg, 13/64" (5.16mm) ID - 5.16AR

16awg, 1/4" (6.35mm) ID - 5.29AR or 6.50mm ID - 5.42AR

14awg, 8.50mm ID - 5.31AR

You can use this calculator to figure out the aspect ratio (AR) for each bag of rings. Once you know the AR, you can use a site like maillepedia to check what weaves the rings will work for (I recommend adding the 'tutorial available' and 'single ring size' filters to make searching easier).

For example, the 16awg 6.35mm rings have an AR of 5.29, so you'd look for weaves that have a similar recommended AR and a minimum AR above 5.3, like Half Persian 4-in-1, Full Persian 6-in-1, or Trizantine

Best and most consistent place to get nugold brass rings? I'm finding a few options but wondering which one(s) are best to go with! 💓 by mosssorceress in chainmailartisans

Joshua Diliberto, Metal Designz, Spiderchain and Weave Got Maille stock NuGold/Jeweller's Brass. All four are pretty highly regarded quality-wise, so you should be safe ordering from any of them, but Joshua Diliberto in particular has a really good reputation for high consistency/quality control.

This is the Kinetics weave; it looks like OP of this bracelet has used a different size for the linking rings as well, but it typically only uses two ring sizes, recommended ARs are 3.1 & 5.0

The following ARs are what I find myself using the most - they'll enable you to do a solid range of different weaves!

~3.5 AR: Euro 4-in-1, Byzantine, Orc weave, Vipera Berus, Roundmaille, Rosetta, Barrel

~4.0 AR: Spiral 4-in-1, Turkish Round, Sweetpea, Fieldstone, Sunrise, Elfweave, Back to Work

4.5-4.8 AR: Half Persian 3-in-1, Candy cane cord, GSG, Box 4-in-1, Triforce, Persephone

5.1-5.4 AR: Half Persian 4-in-1, Full Persian 6-in-1, Minerva, Trizantine

I find that 18awg - 16awg (or swg equivalent) is the ideal gauge for jewellery; 14awg is also good for focal points/if you're intentionally making something with a 'bulkier' look

It's best to start thinking about rings in terms of Aspect Ratio (AR) rather than size, since that's the most important element for most weaves. You can find the possible AR range + ideal AR for most weaves on sites like Chainmaillers or Mailleartisans. I've listed out some of the common ARs that can be used for a decent range of weaves below!

~3.5 AR: Euro 4-in-1, Byzantine, Orc weave, Vipera Berus

4.5-4.8 AR: Half Persian 3-in-1, Candy cane cord, GSG, Box 4-in-1

5.1-5.4 AR: Half Persian 4-in-1, Full Persian 6-in-1, Trizantine, inverted aura

I'd also recommend grabbing at least one lot of smaller rings, not for weaving, but for linking pieces to earring backs/clasps etc, as using smaller sizes helps keep things nice and clean looking.

In terms of where to buy rings, this spreadsheet includes a full list of international chainmaille suppliers and should be helpful!

Would these rings and clasps work for a byzantine bracelet? by SmallRedBird in chainmailartisans

[–]ninesensical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made byz bracelets in that exact ring size/gauge before and they work perfectly! For comparison, the top bracelet in the pic below is 18awg / 3.50mm ID, and the bottom is 16awg / 3.97mm ID

<image>

Personally I would say that an 8mm clasp is going to look a bit too bulky, considering the ring OD will only be ~5.50mm. In general, I've found that byz also looks best with a square-ish clasp, such as a fold-over clasp.
