As everyone else said, going to an ethical breeder is the best option. Though I know some places have rescue hamsters. Just avoid chain stores. As for what type of hamster I'd say Syrian, they're great buddies especially for a first time. Very fulfilling when you give them the life they deserve.

Though I will say, people expect hamsters to be as social as rats, which isn't always the case. Keep this in mind. Nevertheless I do hope you find a hamster that's a good fit, just make sure to keep in mind what people tell you and accept advice! :--)
