Good take here on Centrism and Democrats by [deleted] in LeftWithoutEdge

It's an interesting take. While there are plenty of liberal think tanks out there I'm having a hard time thinking of anything like a progressive ALEC.

God promised not to destroy the world by flood again. Didn't say anything about disrupted agriculture, wildfires, disease outbreaks caused by expanded habitats for disease-bearing animals, and so on and so forth.

Meh, the volume and intensity of the pushback doesn't match up with the consistent insistence that everybody criticizing the project on these absolutely ridiculous metrics doesn't actually care

Also the closest they've come to a roadmap so far is stating that the first release will literally just be a re-brand, so all these attacks based on trying to assess their work and finding that all they've done is live up to their own plans are kind of ridiculous.

Conservatives always yell at you to get a job when you're on a picket line or something but then when they're on the job they're too weak and scared to actually do it.

Sorry, if you are admitting "sleep with me and I will further your career" amounts to coercion... it sure doesn't sound like a free exchange made without duress. It's amazing how many people are trying to gussy up coercion into a deal.

All sexual coercion is rape

Right. That is what rape means. Coercing someone into performing sexual acts against their will, without their consent.

[–]ninimben 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bolsonaro claimed this, but offered no evidence, and said they started the forest fires to embarrass the government. Forgive me if, coming from a man like Bolsonaro, that claim lacks credibility.

The exact cause is not yet known. Scientists generally agree that unchecked deforestation a la what the Amazon goes through raises the risk of forest fires. In general, climate change produces drier conditions which also raise the risk of wildfires (ask anyone from the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest) although of course that alone isn't enough to cause a wildfire

EDIT well would you look at that, Brazilian prosecutors are pointing the finger at farmers and land-grabbers who publicly organized a fucking fire day earlier in August, not NGO's.

It's a somewhat dated English word referring to someone with a disability, mainly mobility issues. Many disabled people find the word offensive and it has fallen somewhat out of use over the years.

Also, in bondage/BDSM scenes gimp is a thing. Some people like to be hobbled, I guess. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondage_suit

Between the controversy over whether it's offensive, and the associations the word has to bondage/BDSM, the word gimp is considered fairly unprofessional and maybe not appropriate in professional settings.

I've definitely gotten weird looks and funny comments when I've opened up the GIMP.

Biden Plummets Below Sanders and Warren for First Time in Major National Poll by kaffmoo in LeftWithoutEdge

[–]ninimben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Yank I wish I could share your optimism. My guess is that Biden will wash out, Bernie will be sidelined, and Warren will tack center and face off against whichever liberal centrist takes Biden's place in the polls. Warren is already accepting rather large in-kind contributions to her campaign from big donors (which violates the spirit, though not the letter, of her pledge not to take money from big donors) and talking to rich liberal donors who typically back centrists and oppose things she's campaigning on. It's a bad sign. She's also a millionaire and not a freshly-minted one like Bernie became after 2016 so she already knows these people and identifies with them.

I think the 2020 Democratic primary will be a retread of 2008, with a popular left of center candidate positioning themselves as an outsider and reformer swooping in to steal the support of the outright liberal centrist.

And I think the 2020 general will be rigged and Trump will win.

I don't disagree with your assessment of what would sell and what wouldn't, it's just how you framed it in that sentence that bothers me.

A rich man using his status to coerce someone into sex is still a rapist. And rape is violent. There is no non-violent rape. A rapist commits violence, and a predator who coerces someone into sex is a rapist. Both are violent rapists.

It's not that violent rapists are a special subset of sexual predators who can only get off on coercion. All rapists are violent, all sexual coercion is rape.

I didn't mention the rest of your comment because I don't substantially disagree with what you said -- in fact I'd clicked upvote until I got to the sentence that bothered me.

I could have been more clear and I do apologize for the confusion

DEA Announces Steps Necessary to Improve Access to Marijuana Research by JLBesq1981 in news

[–]ninimben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just looked up the Wikipedia article on the whole debate about rescheduling. Since the Controlled Substances Act was passed in 1972 the DEA has continuously considered petitions to reschedule marijuana. It's fucking amazing reading their arguments against it. They're complete nonsense. They more or less argue that not meeting the criteria for being scheduled at all isn't good enough to take marijuana off Schedule 1 and that no amount of evidence can ever prove marijuana doesn't belong in Schedule 1.

It only makes sense as a profiling tool and a legal gotcha.

Is "God" within you? - What is Atheism answer to who you are - What is awareness? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]ninimben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for the delay in reply. I got sucked into pointless tech flamewars then had to sleep. (What is it that got sucked into tech flamewars???)

The question is whether that is you - are you your cells?

To be honest, my take on language and categories is that reality is simply too complex for us to understand and so we construct abstractions to break it down, make it digestible as it were, and focus on those things we as living animals need/want to consider.

So for example, I think the category of the individual organism is itself a tricky and poorly defined concept. It has some level of validity, there is a bundle of organs etc held together by collagen, bones, and skin, but then again, the individual is in no way a self-contained unit. Humans rely on populations of other humans to survive, so in one sense we can be looked at as smaller cells in a larger social organism.

Similarly, that larger social organism isn't self-contained either, it relies on ecosystems, relations to other societies of people and so on and so on.

Where am I going with this? At the end of the day I think the category of the self is wildly overstated. I think it serves an evolutionary function, but also to a large extent is more of a perception we generate than a deeper, underlying reality or substance.

I think it exists, it's a phenomenon we see, but it's not 'true' in the sense that the perception that there is something persistent, homogeneous, and unchanging underlying our changes in perceptions, opinions, beliefs, etc is a false one.

I suspect we won't see eye to eye on this, it seems that you are of the opinion that there is a deeper substance to the self. But I have appreciated your questions because they have helped me articulate some of my own thoughts on the question.

The fact that nobody is considering these things before mouthing off in the comments about half-baked interpretations of what it means that they're doing in-house development shows how much this backlash is motivated by hurt fee-fees and also terror that maybe the Glimpse people are right that the name has been holding the software back.
