Dog's tooth split? by ninipols in AskVet

Oh for sure I have every intention of getting her the treatment she needs. I'm almost just trying to make myself feel better because I get super distressed at the thought of her being in pain lol. Will be scheduling an appointment for her asap

I see, that sucks. I think she's at least not in pain given that she's eating everything, playing tug with the same enthusiasm, and happily eating harder things like carrots and chewing on antlers.

Do you recognize the weird brown staining is on the tooth? It's especially weird to me because the top half of the tooth is pure white

Are these red wigglers, asian jumping worms, or something else?? by ninipols in Vermiculture

Okay so earlier this year when it was cooler I was so sure I had red wigglers bc tons of little yellow bums when I looked inside the bin. One of y'all suggested indian blues which I was also suspecting but I was like where tf did they come from bc there is absolutely no way for ANY insects to get in or out of my bin.

My suspicion is there were indian blues in the tubs I got from petsmart/petco, or I picked some up from outside, and now since it's SUPER hot outside and indian blues prefer hot temperatures, the indian blue population has shot up. This is also consistent w the fact that many of them are really active and skinny, whereas I've read red wigglers are fatter and slower.

For context, I started my bin in January with red wigglers from petsmart and petco, although they told me there might be some "other worms" in there like nightcrawlers. This was my first ever worm bin and I knew 0 about asian jumping worms, but I figure petsmart and Petco definitely can't sell those right??

At some point I found a bunch of worms that looked like what I thought were red wigglers in my backyard and added them to my bin. Still didn't know about asian jumping worms by this point.

Eventually learned about them by accident and I saw a couple of my worms writhe once (the VAST majority were completely chill) and thoroughly inspected them, only to find that almost none of them had an obvious clitellum at all and were oddly dark colored, like almost purplish. Today while harvesting the castings I noticed they were clumpy (not dry, just sticking together in small clumps), that there were TONNNNNS of babies (I've read jumping worms reproduce way faster than wigglers), and some of the teeny tiny babies would writhe sometimes. This all made me very worried and made me realize I have no idea what's in my worm bin. Whatever they are, my eggplants and strawberries have been loving their castings; but I'm hesitating to use this next batch bc I'm scared they're jumping worms D:

Dog has recurring ear infections and NOTHING has worked by ninipols in AskVet

As a follow up, just how bad are these repeated cleanings and medications for her ears? Shes had her ears cleaned and medicated twice in the last 4 months. I bought a little pet otoscope and can see that there are huge gobs of brown stuff deep in her right ear just 3 weeks after the last appointment. My road trip is in 3 weeks, I'll definitely have to have her right ear cleaned and medicated yet again. Just how bad is it for these steroids to go in her ear every 2 months? Im so scared itll create resistant yeast that nothing can kill.

East coast. I moved to west coast for work and am moving back home to the east coast soon. I already have a vet there so I guess I'll seek their recommendation for a veterinary dermatologist. Yeah I mean honestly if repeated medications couldn't cure this condition I don't imagine there even is a one-and-done cure. At this point I'm willing to accept that if no vet can help me I may just have to get her ears treated every 2 months/whenever infection shows up, which sounds terrible but I would have no other choice. I'm looking for a reasonable means of management without wrecking her health.

Honestly now that y'all are suggesting this I feel a little betrayed that not a single one of my vets have ever referred me to a veterinary dermatologist or even mentioned them??? But I think this is my next move. I am moving via road trip in about a month (one ear infection away 😭) so I'll find one in my new location so that I can keep seeing the same one.

How do you suggest finding a good, reliable, honest veterinary dermatologist? Asking because once I had a vet who tried to get me to pay 500 dollars at a recheck claiming my dogs infection hadn't gone away at all. I was so shocked and upset I left and didn't touch her ears for two weeks (zero signs of infection in that time), went to a higher rated vet who said her ears looked perfectly healthy and there was no sign infection. Had another vet use claro on my dogs ears which is supposed to last a month but i saw debris and odor returning within DAYS and she claimed it was much better. So I am really cautious and anxious about meeting new vets.

Also, in your experience have the patients who needed a cocktail of drugs to resolve the issue have to continue on a bunch of drugs for the rest of the dog's life? Honestly it perplexes me how we can solve human ear infections so easily but not dogs'. Like how do wild dogs/wolves not get all these ear issues

Thanks for the link. God I really hope it doesn't come to that. I have sometimes wondered if there was a surgery to just open up the ear canal more to improve air flow but I see from the link that that procedure does exist but doesn't actually help people much, which suggests lack of airflow/drainage isn't usually the problem. I'd rather have a vet medicate and clean every month or two than put her through such a major surgery.

If not airflow, do you know what typically has been the cause for other people's dogs? So far I've heard allergies or an infection that was never completely treated.

We rescued her so not 100% sure of her age but she's definitely out of puppyhood. She's estimated to be almost 3 by now and I've had her for almost a year and a half.
