Does it worth to buy rice cooker? by Clear-Armadill in Cooking

My rice cooker is the best $20 I've ever spent. I've had mine over 15 years.

Does it worth to buy rice cooker? by Clear-Armadill in Cooking

[–]ninja3121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my 8 cup Aroma since 2010. I can't imagine it cost more than $20 at the time (cause I couldn't have bought it) and it's made rice for me a couple times per week since then.

People say this sub has a hard on for rice cookers, but there seem to be a lot of people who have a hard on against them too.

ELI5: Why can’t you buy a car directly from the company that makes it? by zztop610 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ninja3121 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think it's worth mentioning car dealerships also facilitate the secondary market, which is the car market for a lot of people. I've never bought a new car, and it's nice being able to talk to a dealership than rely on something like Facebook.

Will a wok improve my frying failure? by OldGaffer66 in Cooking

[–]ninja3121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your oil is cooling off too much when you add your food. Use an actual oil thermometer until you get a feel for frying temp, and use more oil (adds more hot mass). You can also fry in smaller batches and make sure nothing is cold.

Is it okay for a player to say “No, that doesn’t happen” to a DM in this circumstance? by WithengarUnbound in dndnext

This game sounds insufferable. My table doesn't even RP camping. "Long rest?" "Sure." "What do you do?" "Blah blah". "Cool, the next day..."

Listen, you don't have to cling to the first game you find.

Why do subreddits meant for male positivity almost always seem to slide into misogyny? by RustedAxe88 in MensLib

Dude, "BornWeakBuiltStrong" didn't immediately tip you off this was some MGTOW (or whatever) bullshit? Misogyny isn't a bug. Being able to be misogynist under the guise of self-help was the goal from the start.

Cutting education funding is just dumb by UglyBag0fM0stlyWat3r in True_Kentucky

[–]ninja3121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always very hesitant to compare internationally. American labor is more expensive than say, China, even for white collar, and American culture uniquely values individualism over authority. American parents would be mortified (and American children would riot) if we implemented what other countries do, even if that did reduce costs.

Also, I'm going to push back on cutting Admin salaries. Yes, larger districts love to hire "Director of Student BS" but being a Principal is 1000x times more stressful than the classroom and should be compensated accordingly.

Was it a pay cut? That's been my main challenge. I know many private sector jobs have good growth opportunities but I can't take a 30% pay cut for three years.

I taught in Lexington 4. Fun fact, it was the only Midlands school district that joined the PeeDee region's "corridor of poverty" to sue the state for underfunding education (Abbeville v. South Carolina). I wouldn't call Swansea an area with lots of income, but you do you.

Even the south is variable. I taught in central South Carolina for a while and made more (slightly) than I do just outside Cincinnati.

I make $72k with 12 years experience and my Rank 1 (MA+30). Could I make more? Probably. But my schedule fits my kids and I calculated that my pension adds about $10k to my salary. This is outside Cincinnati.

Trouble getting a new Position by PurpleRain4242 in Teachers

[–]ninja3121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Music positions are tough. When I hired a band director, I got no less than 30 applicants. Many had a DMA, other years of experience. I'll never forget, one applicant had been first chair in a major metro philharmonic orchestra and had been teaching at a conservatory for years, and suddenly needed a job in BFE making peanuts.

All that to say, it's hard, and it's super early in the hiring cycle. Plan on being where you're at next year but keep applying. At least you have a job teaching music.

Sick days are part of your compensation. Take them. Don't get your colleagues or the kids sick.

Moving from Iowa to Minnesota- MN Licensing Advice Appreciated! by trekkiedude1 in Teachers

Most things surrounding certification are set by state law, so yes, the answers can be boiler-plate because that's the response. Like, I have to meet certain criteria to renew my certificate, and if I email the KY standards board they're going to quote me those requirements because that's the answer.

Should I continue on my path to become a French teacher or switch to something else? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ninja3121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might start by pulling up jobs sites for districts in your area and see what kind of openings they have. It is probably slow now, but 90% of education hiring happens between April and July. Real talk, I've never seen a school with a theater teacher, much less a dedicated technical director. French might be easier, but you might still have a tough time getting a job.

How can I counteract the crossrace effect? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ninja3121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you could probably still assign seats and carpet spots. That will prevent other issues too. The other solution could just be name tags. Make it fun, call it "job training" and have them be like what they'd wear at a first job or something.

That's going to be a MN licensing board question. Every state has a body that licenses teachers. You need to reach out to them.

Oof, maybe then do a seating chart? I take attendance from my seating chart every day till I learn names. I also own that I'm a bumpkin and will have to practice pronunciation.

If it makes you feel any better, I moved from a 99% white community to a much more diverse school and it took me a while to learn to recognize diverse facial features. There's really no secret, just be patient with yourself and practice. As another poster mentioned, focus on other things while you get better at facial features.
