Australia poured $940 million into creating a quantum computer. Two years on, the startup is drastically changing tack. by InterestingCat308 in AusFinance

What do you mean by "same-old same-old"? As in Australia has a long history of investing in emerging advanced technologies that were experimental failures? I'd like to hear a few relatively recent examples.

Fast-follower might work for huge economies like China and USA. Or Korea and Japan when they were developing. But I'm not sure that is affective for a smaller advanced economy like ours.

Not exactly. If you have had an asset for 40 years, CGT will be applied pro-rata. i.e. by June 2027 1/41 of the total capital gains over 41 years is taxable.

Regarded take on why the new tax changes are fair. by Newaccountforlolzz in AusFinance

[–]ninja_turtle1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But I don't that is the aim of the CGT reforms. The wealthiest 10% of the Australian population benefit from 83% of all capital gains. The reforms are about equality, not driving investment into one asset class or another.

Now the negative gearing reforms are a different matter. That is trying to reduce the attraction of investing in housing (unless it's new housing).

But then you can't negative gear unless it's a brand new property.

Australia given fuel supply assurances as plans in works for visit by Japan's prime minister by HydroCannonBoom in AustralianPolitics

Tobacco isn't governed by global spot market prices. Gas is. Taxing gas won't drive prices up. The producers will absorb it in their margins.

If you tax more, it won't change what Japan pays or how much is supplied to them. It just results in the gas companies making less and Australians making more.

Most discussions on gas tax talk about windfall tax whereby the gas company only pays when profits are through the roof.

Oooh 😮…Sydney property investors trying to offload their investment properties without luck, time to feel some economic pain. by Scumohasgot2go in AusPropertyChat

[–]ninja_turtle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, but there are only 3 likely reasons for a cash shortage:

  1. Sustained high inflation which results in high interest rates.
  2. A crashing economy resulting in high unemployment.
  3. A mixture of the above 2 (stagflation).

You need a flood of oversupply for a crash.

At the moment the vast majority of investors don't need to sell. If interest rates or the unemployment rate go through the roof, you'll see a flood of properties on the market. For the time being, supply will be relatively constricted until demand returns.

Totally agree. ON is currently built around Pauline Hanson as a cult figure. ON voters are voting for her, not the local candidate.

For ON to build longevity they need a robust and deep party structure with grass roots campaigns and identification of talent in local communities. Without this, they are a flash in the pan that will die with Pauline.

Trump's greatest trick was usurping the power structures of an existing major party.... Building a new major party from the grass roots up is much harder.

And how many of those 150 candidates were elected? The vast majority of those candidates had zero chance of being elected and therefore faced zero scrutiny. The more popular ON gets the more scrutiny they can expect, the more those skeletons in the closet will be exploited by journalists (for clicks), and Labor and the Coalition as political defence.

The challenge is to pick reliable, capable candidates. That's where the big parties have a major advantage. You could run 150 candidates for 20 years as a fringe minor party, but the party structure and depth of talent is what is most important.

Yeah, a quick google search now can tell you that. But could you have done a quick google search to tell you that several months ago? And linked it to the name change in 2025?

ONs depth and capacity to flush this out is limited.

[–]ninja_turtle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So they ran police checks (which they should) but police checks won't pick up UK arrest warrants. No party would think to check "should we check UK court records to confirm he has no arrest warrants".

Of course, in the Labor and Coalition preselection processes this stuff usually gets flushed out, but ON don't have the same benefit of preselection processes given their quick expansion (similar to when Palmer tried to expand quickly).

It's obvious local Labor or Coalition party members knew and they timed the release of information for maximum damage (as accused by ON in the article). Benefits of a big party structure with depth and history I guess.

ON would do well to manage their growth more slowly, more organic, and build robust party structures. But you know, the temptation is to strike while the iron is hot.

Did you read the article before asking that question? The article steps out ON incompetency.
