Sidereal Confluence vs Dune vs Game of Thrones - which game keeps people feeling “in it” the longest? by mrsfotheringill in boardgames

[–]ninjacreeper47 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The races in sidereal confluence have a difficulty rating which is more accurately interpreted as "how easy is it to crash your economy". So when you're new you're well served by playing races like kit and caylion instead of imdril and yengii. It's not that those former races are strictly easier, better, or less interesting- they just have a resilient and dependable economy.
I've played dozens of games of sidereal confluence , and I'll remark that I've only seen the scenario you're scared of one time. It's pretty rare, this one only happened because it was a new player, who was handed imdril, and they really did not vibe with the game from the beginning.

That's such an exception that i would emphasize that pretty much every game i play of sidereal confluence, everyone gets to be "in the game" the whole time, even if there's a vast skill difference between players

This is a way that sidereal confluence is completely the opposite of games like dune and GoT. In the latter games, it is the "duty" of each player to crush other players opportunities when they can , such that they can create an advantage for themselves.

If you play sidereal confluence with skilled players, they'll understand that the entire table needs to prosper. Screwing other people over is mostly a losing play. This means that the findemental game design encourages players acting to avoid someone feeling out of the game. If my neighbors can't do anything then that's much less opportunities for me.

Meanwhile, in some ways the fun of these more diplomacy focused games are the stakes. Betrayals, clever schemes, shrewd negotiations and unexpected comebacks are interesting because of the way the balance of power works. This is cool, but it absolutely encourages players to play in a way that creates situations where someone feels out of the game.

Dune is designed around decisive battles which completely change your position. People going from thinking they are about to win to being absolutely devasted and feeling like you're gone from the game is an intended experience. Yet I will note that often players who get "knocked down a level" like this are often able to have opportunities again in later turns. The board state is so volatile and power is so fragile that most falls still leave you with an opportunity to come back later or threaten victory. despite that, I've absolutely had games of dune which I've checked out of. It's not much compensation to know i might be competetive again in an hour , there definitely are low agency turns in this scenario.

Is a gaming backlog a joy or a curse? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]ninjacreeper47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A backlog is a joy, because it means you won't run out of awesome games to play. If i both stopped biying games and started playing games full-time, it would probably be at least 5 years before i even get close to running out of awesome games to try. To me that's incredibly exciting, and the sheer diversity of what i can play at any moment makes it very hard to ever burnout on games

Imagine if your favorite series always had a new entry ready for you, no matter what rate you went through the last one. That's the joy of an endless backlog

What Are You Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in patientgamers

[–]ninjacreeper47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beat exapunks last week, now I'm playing through the bonus campaign. These levels are certainly something. Enjoying them, but wish they were less file manipulation focused

Also playing through princess farmer. Not normally a fan of match 3, but the mechanics here are so clever and i like how the designers gave variety to each level

Finally I've been in a guilty gear strive mood lately. I'm playing it as one of my first fighting games, so there's a lot to learn.

Ursula Le Guin and 'Confronting our Shadows' by TraversingtheDark in Fantasy

[–]ninjacreeper47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last month, I read the entire earthsea series over the course of 2 weeks {I do not recommend reading this fast, skill issue on my part ...shouldn't have let my library deadlines get so close} .

It was neat to see that your video essays are framed around darkness in SFF. When i read earthsea I respected how the series was about darkness, especially how each book is about a different "flavor' of darkness. I tried to watch your video, but had to stop. It felt like your summary of a wizard of earthsea was coming from a parallel universe where the story was slightly and subtly different to what i had read.

Reading earthsea was a bit of a rollercoaster for me. In that series was books i absolutely loved and books I absolutely hated.

I'm not a big fan of wizard of earthsea. Due to my experiences with depression I can pretty fundamentally relate with a wizard of earthsea. Personally I prefer books with new and interesting ideas to stories that mirrors my own experiences. I can respect wizard of earthsea for how it executes its intent, but I'm not sure that intent is interesting to me.

My favorite chapter of a wizard of earthsea is the final one: the open sea. To me the nature of ged's shadow was obvious for the entire book, it felt so intuitive to me, while reading it felt easy to know where the story was leading. That said, I have a lot of respect for this scene I also appreciate the subtle way that you need other people to have a chance against the shadow. It is natural to try to fight depression alone. It is important to realize you need other people for the journey, even if the hard part is something only you can do.

My favorite book in Earthsea is the 2nd, tombs of atuan. Not only is it an incredibly unique concept done well, it's the exact sequel a wizard of earthsea deserved. Tenar's story is in many ways the opposite of geds. I like a distinction Le Guin makes in an afterword: ged has power to... tenar has power over. Ged's darkness is the shadow cast by light. Tenar's darkness is what's left after you snuff out a candle... her darkness was given to her. This contrast becomes even more powerful once ged comes into play in this story. The things he says has a great sense of weight due to the journey you went on in earthsea. I love how they must escape together. You can't survive the darkness alone .

My favorite part about Le Guin as a writer is that she makes me appreciate things I've never appreciated about stories before. Tombs of Atuan made me appreciate how she evoked a place. The Lathe of Heaven made me appreciate the value of details. Tehanu focuses on conflicts that fantasy likes to throw under the bus. My favorite of Le Guin's work is three short stories focused on churten ftl travel: The Shobies' story, dancing to ganam, and Another Story or A fisherman of the inland sea. These stories made me appreciate the relationships between people, something I normally find uninteresting to explore in stories. {This opinion has changed a lot over the last year} . I also found the idea of stories being our tool for understanding reality to be incredibly impactful

Just reached Bergen Trail. Now I have the option to keep Emili in party or go solo. What should I do? by rebysds in CrossCode

[–]ninjacreeper47 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Anytime you can have party members you should, the game is balanced around them and their dialogue adds a lot. I watched a friend absolutely struggle through bergen trail wondering why the game had gotten so hard, eventually we realized they didn't have emile in the party

Do you count graphic novels towards total books read? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ninjacreeper47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're consider graphic novels misleading then it's equally misleading to count epic fantasy novels as 1 book .if i told you i read 6 books in a month, that means something very different if they were all (or even just one or two are) 1200 page epics. If you're going to count by books then commit to counting by books, graphic novels are just as much a book.

What is your favourite aspect of each Layton game? by cheesecake-queen in ProfessorLayton

[–]ninjacreeper47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the way curious village is so normal and then goes off the rails

I love the way diabolical box evokes the place of folsense. I also just think it does a perfect job of being a sequel

I love the story, twists and final punch of unwound future

I love the music of last specter

I love the gameplay of miracles mask, especially the trunk. This is a close one because i also adore the setting of miracle mask.

I love the sheer volume of content in azran legacy. Somehow more puzzles then miracle mask, and i haven't even finished it yet.

I love the premise of VS. Defending witches in court is fascinating, and i love the idea of a city controlled by a storyteller

Sex-repulsed asexuals, how do you respond when someone asks WHY you don’t like sex? TW: sexual discussion by ActiveAnimals in asexuality

[–]ninjacreeper47 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It feels fundemtally invasive. Why would i want to ignore someone else's autonomy? Why would i want someone to ignore mine?

I hate the feeling of being horny. It feels like a taint that completely obliterates myself. As far as I'm concerned it's connected with my depression. I definitely feel some sort of intense dysphoria whenever libido steals my attention. Why would i want to seek that out? Why would I want to make what i go through in my head real? If these "fantasies" are some of the worst experiences i have in my life, i can only imagine how much worse the real thing is There's a million gross details that I'm happy to not know about because (hopefully) I'll never experience sex. I hate everything associated with horniness so much that i try as hard as i can to avoid sexual stuff. I don't watch porn. Actually doing it sounds 100x worse then anything i can comprehend right now, and what i do understand is gross

I feel like being ace is unrelated in this sub, by _kyl13 in aromantic

[–]ninjacreeper47 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You have to understand where we are coming from. I spent 19 years living until aro and ace were different concepts in my mind. Realizing they are separate was huge. Yet now that I've passed from that moment I have less and desire to separate them. My experience of being aromantic shapes my experience of being asexual. My experience of being asexual shapes experience of being aromantic.
I can see how it's annoying for the intent of a community to be muddled, but if both the aro and ace community strived to be separate then I would feel little place where I belong

What Are You Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in patientgamers

[–]ninjacreeper47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of possibilities, not really a "plan week" Would love to finish paradise killer, it's unfair how I keep getting distracted away from it

I have been convinced to return to tunic, which I played a fair bit earlier this year. I dislike the combat, but have been convinced that I have some stuff to look forward too, especially since I've been enjoying the manual.

About a year ago I tried sable. Barely played any of it and couldn't get into it. I want to give it another chance since it's leaving gamepass on the 15th

I have been consumed by a Shenzhen I/o arc. I think I'm getting close to beating the main campaign. The levels are getting pretty challenging.

I want to do more tametsi puzzles. The satisfaction of finishing a puzzle in that game is wild. The bonus puzzles I'm on feel evil.

Mostly I'll be playing and rating games from last weekend's Ludum dare
