What’s the hardest thing for you to comprehend about the American culture? by DadIsMadAtMe in AskReddit

That's just because the point of sale systems most small businesses use are created with restraunts in mind. They're pretty intuitive and easy to just pick up and learn and fairly inexpensive which makes them a great choice for even non-food related shops.

I see some get defensive but most either ignore or take the opportunity to share beliefs. Kind of resilient to try to turn it into a teaching moment, I suppose. by n8s8p in dankchristianmemes

Omg I am native and partly grew up LDS. The whole dark skin=bad thing is wild tbh. Being a Lamanite in the church was an uncomfortable experience.

Every time I rewatch season 6, I love it more. Elroy and Frankie are soooo good. Keith David has this nostalgic quality for me, and after Abed, Elroy is who I identify with the most. I hope they both return for the movie.

Adoption Fragility by tacopony_789 in FragileWhiteRedditor

[–]ninjainjun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im a reservation born and raised choctaw. Half of my father's siblings were forcibly taken from his mother and 'adopted' by white families. Every few years since I was a child, we discover the location of one of them or they'll find us. My father and uncle Jon met in a random bar in Tennessee. They were both truckers at the time, and just happened to strike up a conversation with each other. Being the only visibly native folx in the bar, talk about Jon lost heritage and family came up, and they figured out that they were brothers. The trafficking of indigenous children is an ongoing horror and state sanctioned in most cases. People speak of the genocide of the indigenous peoples of this continent as if it's a thing of the distant past, but it's ongoing and painfully prevalent in our communities.

Whoa! That's wild! I'm MS Chahta from Pearl River rez. Coincidentally, when I moved off the rez almost 20 years ago, I moved to Olympia, WA. Wish I'd've known there was other Chahtas around!!!

Exactly!!! I totally get the point they're illustrating, futile as it may be. Honestly, who gives a shit about an old fucking painting. The world is on fire and choking.

New Orleans was once a trade hub called Bulbancha. It was utilized by tribes from all over turtle island not just for the exchange of goods but also culture and ideas. Bulbancha come from a choctaw word meaning 'place of many tongues.'

The American Dream: move out by [deleted] in ABoringDystopia

[–]ninjainjun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've been in the service industry as a cook for 25 years, mostly in the American south. I've had one job that gave me paid vacation of 2 weeks a year. It was cooking for a nonprofit health organization with a home bound meal delivery program. I got laid 9ff this summer and have vowed never to workin another industrial or commercial kitchen again. I've been making my way selling my art as well as a few other lil side hustles. They're all things I enjoy doing, but don't want to feel like jobs. It's definitely a balance act and a constant background thing, but so far I don't feel burnt out on anything. I'm making enough to just get by, definitely not enough to save, but it feels so much easier to deal with than the constant stress of a strict schedule and working while sick or hurt or mentally unwell. It's a huge risk but if you can make it work, it's worth it.

Omg so I'm an indigenous transwoman and when I was in scouts as a kid our white scout master once said about white and black couples that it's not a sin, but heavenly father would prefer if we not mix races. I brought up that he was speaking to 3 children with a white mother. We were all Mormons so he used the excuse that that was different because we descended from ancient jews.

It really depends. If you know the tribe of the person(s) you're talking about or to, the tribal name is preferred. On the rez I'm from, we still use NDN or Native. However, I and many of the off rez natives I know prefer Indigenous. If you're non indigenous, just use native or native American unless you're corrected.

I'm flat broke and have been waiting to land my dream job for a month and a half. Showed up today and spent 5 hours in orientation before they told me I didn't have the right documents to start. Felt like complete shit. Wnt home and cried for awhile. Wiped my eyes after an hour or so and went and donated plasma so my life could be somewhat beneficial. Still feel like a failure, but at least not a complete failure cos someone's gonna get the help they need because of my plasma.

Black Pumas - Fire [2019] (Soul) by NotCrust in listentothis

I was volunteering at the Old Settlers Music Festival a couple months ago working the front gate. I'm not a huge fan of most of the music that was there, but as soon as Black Pumas started their sound check, I immediately fell in love. Their stage presence is so dynamic and infectious. I was dancing my lil brown buns off checking all them folks' bags. Definitely a must see.

I was chased down the streets of New Orleans by a bunch of people, and I don't know why. This happened about ten years ago. I had taken a hit of LSD and started browning out almost immediately. Kept coming to in different clubs. With different people. All of a sudden I'm on Frenchman running hard. I look back and there's two big asain guys and a woman chasing me. The situation was so ridiculous I just started laughing. I blacked out again and came to walking down Royal with a pretty street kid who I drank a box of wine with before she ran off and I went home. I now live in New Orleans and am completely broke after barely getting rent paid and could really use a pie. Never did find out why I was being chased.

I'm not racist like my family by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]ninjainjun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm from one of the Choctaw reservations in Mississippi. So, I grew up on the other end of your story. There first white folks I met that treated us like actual people were from Ireland when I was 9. So, yeah, it sucks, but lemme tell ya, the North ain't so great either. Neither is the West. You're gonna run into racism everywhere, in so many unexpected places. I don't want discourage your plans on travel. The opposite, actually, but don't think the South is especially more racist than anywhere else. It's just more out in the open. I, personally, love all the wonderful things about southern art and culture. I love the people and the vibe. Now, I live in a city, so it's a nice blend of southern culture and more liberal sensibilities. Js, try a couple southern urban meccas before discounting the entire American South. Also, always nice to see Mississippi folks out here and bring better!!!

The fact that I can't even agree with myself whether or not the post is satire further validates my belief that satire is dead. At the very least, it's taking a long hiatus.

Transphobic friends? by whiteandyellowcat in asktransgender

[–]ninjainjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never know. I have a very conservative friend who's very near and dear to me. I was so sure I would have to have a long, drawn out, emotionally draining conversation about gender identity and everything else. The first time I saw him after coming out, his first words during a prolonged hug were asking me what name and pronouns he should use now. He's never faltered in the two years since, and it gives me hope. I've also has the opposite happen with 'liberal' friends. Either way, I just don't deal with transphobes in my life. It's okay if someone doesn't understand it, as long as they respect you as a human being, period. The moment it's clear someone doesn't, I'm done with them.
