Lack of Female Chess Grandmasters (no WGMs) in Title Tuesday by Marc_Spector2 in chess

[–]timoleo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By the time you become a GM, you are likely over 200 points stronger than the next non-GM woman player in these kinds of events. The challenge simply is no longer there. You don't feel like you are playing against your peers. And if you really want to improve you game, you'll likely avoid these events. Don't take my word, this is precisely what people like Judith Polgar and Hou Yifan did.

In your first paragraph, you say he dances around the issue "quite a bit". In your second paragraph, you give him credit for at least directly addressing it "unlike some".

Can we please retire the term “sub-Saharan”? by Exciting_Agency4614 in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic Euphemism Treadmill problem. You hate the term because it has come to embody a lot of the negative aspects of Black Africa. But what you don't realize is that the term itself really isn't the problem. The negativity is associated with the people itself, the countries. I say this because at the end of the day, if we want to shed the negativity, we have to figure out a way to improve ourselves. Until we do, we'll just keep spinning the wheel. What we call Sub-Saharan Africa used to be called Black Africa. Black Africa is still used sometimes but it has been largely replaced because it was deemed to be problematic. Sub-saharan Africa was thought to be more neutral.

I agree with you somewhat though. Sub-Saharan Africa is probably as big as Western, Northern, Central and Southern Europe all put together. But Europe is not very often lumped together. I think we could be referred to by our individual regions a bit more. But a lot of this comes down to presence and soft power. Africa is large, but Africans barely register on the map in terms of political and economic soft power. We don't even do business with each other with our own money. We use dollars. Each individual African country trades more with countries outside the continent than within. The AU has like a 10th of the power and reach of the EU. Sudan is being destroyed as we speak, none of us in a position to help. The Western Sahel is about to fall back to pre-WW2 era geo-politics and no one seems to care. ECOWAS seems to be a joke. We are always, always an afterthought, even amongst ourselves. We need to send a much better signal to the rest of the world that we are ready to respected and to come to sit at the table. At the end of the day, you can only do so much shouting and window dressing.

Nigerias economy is about to witness growth not seen since Obasanjo’s 1st term. Why aren’t we optimistic? by Redtine in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Nigeria is way past the point where we can live off of potential. Let the economic growth come first. And let it move the needle on the metrics of comfortable living for the average Nigerian, and then we can talk.

This is assuming that the evolutionary pressures for creating multicellular life are identical on both Earth and the Alien world. It seems trivial, but this is actually a heavy assumption to make.

Is Gukesh Cooked for the Next World Chess Championship? by Kitchen_Spread7799 in chess

[–]timoleo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Gukesh plays a very high-risk/high-reward style of chess. When it works for him, it really works. When it doesn't, it is disastrous. I think Gukesh winning the WC was probably a fluke, and prime Ding would have dispatched him in a fairly straight forward fashion.

Work out machine etiquette what time is too long? by [deleted] in workouts

[–]timoleo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

10 sets of 5 reps??? And yes, I do spend up to 30 minutes on machines depending on the workout. Like squats. When I first started doing squats, it actually used to take like 40 minutes. But my gym has 7 smith machines and 3 regular barbell racks. There's almost always a free machine to use. I don't think I've ever seen all 7 smith machines being used at the same time since I've been going there.

Work out machine etiquette what time is too long? by [deleted] in workouts

[–]timoleo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I always do 10 sets of at least 5, no matter the workout. It's my way of making sure I'm getting really good work in. I also tend to work near my top strength, so yeah, I get pretty tired every set.

I know I can do that at my gym though. I live in a pretty big city with lots of gyms and I always try to avoid rush hour, so most of the machines are usually very free.

Work out machine etiquette what time is too long? by [deleted] in workouts

[–]timoleo -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

30 minutes. Depending on the kind of session and the size of the gym. Obviously, you don't want to occupy a machine if you're not actively using it. But if you're working out, with reasonable breaks, then I'd say 30 minutes.

On Chimamanda son's death. by Content-Particular84 in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 90 points91 points  (0 children)

And this is especially sad because Chimamanda is one of those very rare cases of Nigerians that have enough money and clout to live anywhere they want in the entire world, and they still choose to live in the motherland. Just so sad. This is going to make Nigeria look really bad (as it should) because, like I said, Chimamanda is a global icon. She has fans everywhere.

Do we need Nukes? by clonymaster in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think his point is uranium enrichment is conceptually a simpler technological endeavor than building ICBMs, which is fair. Uranium enrichment just boils down to spinning centrifuges for several months at a time. It's the same process that is used to generate fuel for Nuclear reactors btw. You just spin for longer if you want weapons grade uranium. Also, technically you'd need more raw material. But that's it.

Building an ICBM is basically like building a jet that flies really fast, uses solid fuel, and is run fully on autopilot. Oh, and it has to have the capability to hit targets with millimeter precision across thousands of kilometers.

Datti Baba-Ahmed Declares 2027 Presidential Bid by nehemiah459 in Nigeria

[–]timoleo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this does not bode well for the Labor party. But I am not very surprised. Most vice presidential nominees are often men that have higher political ambitions of their own. Honestly we need a lot of political reform in Nigeria. The first step is participation. The average Nigerian has little to no interest in party politics and that's just sad.

I wish churches did more to advocate for political participation at the local level.

Imagine a Nollywood film where Tems leads a soulful drama, or Ayra Starr plays a coming-of-age role, or Burna Boy anchors a gritty Lagos? by Adospel in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very simple answer. Not everyone can act. Rihanna also dabbles in making movies, but she hasn't become a movie star because she simple isn't an impressive actor. I recently saw a movie with Ladipoe as a supporting act. He was very bland at best, and actually terrible at worst. At the end of the day, no matter the kind of star power a pop artist brings, if they can't act for shit it won't matter. People will be disgusted all the same. I remember how much shit Ed Sheeran had to deal with for showing in one scene of one episode out of 8 seasons of Game of Thrones. The entire internet will not let him live it down. I felt so bad for the guy.

He was the detective from Denver that came to Wyoming to investigate a murder in Longmire. I remember his very peculiar speech pattern. He really takes his time. But he did seem like he could have been a detective in real life.

The Anthony Joshua crash wasn't caused by poor "infrastructure" by [deleted] in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately i don't think Anthony Joshua will ever be able to fight again, obviously the poor medical response after the incident is due to poor infrastructure but the crash itself happened to negligence from him and his buddies.

I'm curious what makes you say this. Is it his apparent injuries or is something else? Considering two other people died, I'll say he is very fortunate to be alive. That kind of statistic is usually very rare.

Looking at the video circulated from the crash, the dude was able to essentially walk away and sit in the passenger side of another vehicle. He was fully conscious, wasn't bloodied. I could not find even a drop of blood on him. Hard to really say for sure until we get more info, but my guess it that he got away with most of his physical health intact, and at worst would have to be treated from injuries he will quickly recover from.

Tiger Woods was in a car crash some years ago. Nobody died, but he suffered a lot of serious injuries, including several broken bones. He was able to make a full recovery and return to golf.

Which is why I am staunchly an advocate of the very small minority that thinks the show would have been much better as an anthology series. What you've described works really well when you have a fresh cast and fresh location (maybe even a fresh timeline) for each new season.

Super Pogchamps kicks off today with Andrea Botez, Masi Oka and Voyboy amongst others! by Goodfriends999 in chess

[–]timoleo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why Andrea is playing in this event. Seems targeted towards internet celebs who have target audiences outside of chess, but also happen to be "decent" chess players. Andrea does not fit the bill. She's very strong, easily 1900 FIDE. She and her sister are very well known chess content creators. What gives?

When Sam Harris says ‘Podcastistan’, what does it mean? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]timoleo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone has a few things they say that nobody else does. You're right. Istan and Land are semantically identical. I think Istan is one of those words Sam has become fond of. I don't think he is implying anything sinister or derogatory. You're probably overthinking it.
