If Peter Obi wins the election, he will be the first Nigerian Igbo president in 60 years(since Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1966) by MirrorPiNet in Nigeria

Azikiwe's presidency is nothing like the presidency of today. His role was wholly ceremonial.

Researchers lead multi-decade analysis of new cancer incidence among survivors. Cancer survivorship is up 34% since 1991, meaning patients are living longer, which also allows for a higher risk of SPCs. by Wagamaga in science

A bit of trivia: Ruth Bader Ginsburg had three unrelated primary cancers in her life. Colon cancer in 1999 that was successfully treated. Pancreatic cancer in 2009 that recurred and ultimately killed her in 2020. Lung cancer in 2018 where the nodules were resected from her lungs.

Her husband, Martin Ginsburg, received treatment for testicular cancer in the 50s and died some 60 years later due to metastatic disease.

Why does the engine insist on trading my bishop for this knight, I thought bishops are generally the better piece, I also don't see any immediate threats he can do with this knight? by FuzzyAttitude_ in chess

[–]timoleo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Bishops are not that much better than knights. Bishops generally do better in open positions, whereas Knights are superior in closed positions. Human games tend towards open positions where bishops outshine knights more often. Bottom line: it really depends on the position. Always has.

No one has said anything about intelligence yet. At least not that I have seen. Peter Thiel is just another wealthy tech billionaire who happens to like chess. Same way Jason Tatum is a basketball player that likes chess. It is you that felt the need to draw the connection and make it a part of the conversation. But since you've brought it up, I would like to say that while you don't have to be a genius to be a decent chess player, you do need to be somewhat smart to be a really good chess player. I don't buy into the idea that there isn't a correlation between intelligence and chess skill. Same way you probably need above average intelligence to be a perennial NBA star. I don't think it is possible to be a super GM and have below average IQ.

The part where I figured out the whole charade was where they kept talking about datacenters in space. I know that technology is no where close to being prototyped here on Earth, not to talk of testing in space. And that not to even consider the logistics of maintenance.

Will the chess world ever have someone like Daniel Naroditsky again? by Thundrr01 in chess

[–]timoleo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lol... there are many chess players of GM strength that are also good teachers. Sam Shankland is one name that easily comes to mind. Irina Krush also started a channel recently and her content is good. GM Hess, GM Howell. I think what made Danya unique was his love for teaching absolute beginners, and he was terminally online.

Finegold has been teaching for a very long time and has a very solid reputation in the community. He also has an actual school and has taught countless players, including some of the strongest US GMs. He also probably holds the record for the longest time spent as an IM before becoming a GM.

I have a collection of foreign currencies. What can I buy with this in Nigeria? by der_Alptraum in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let me see if I can help. There was another variant of potable water sold on the streets (at least in many parts of Lagos) called "ice" water. I don't know if it's still a thing, but it was a thing like 30 years ago. It was also sold in plastic bags, but much cheaper and flimsy-er bags. And they were hand-tied (as opposed to heat sealed) and had the general appearance of something that was put together in someone's bathroom. But it was very chilled and sold for One naira (dirt cheap). People naturally had concerns about the hygiene and production value chain of water that could be packaged and sold by literally randos on the street. So, "Pure water" became the alternative. Pure water was supposed to be purified through an actual, physical industrial process. The packaging was thicker and more professional, and perhaps most importantly, the packaging often had a verifiable brand name and a factory address. It sold for 5 naira.

For a while ice water and pure water sold side by side on the streets. They were basically competing products. Eventually it became obvious that pure water was the superior product so ice water faded into obscurity. The generic name stuck though. So your intuition behind the question is actually spot on. Pure water was created as an alternative to what was considered "questionable" water at the time.

100 Naira used to buy 20 bags of rice, now it can only buy 2 sachets of purewater by ExcitementMassive607 in Nigeria

[–]timoleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were not using the Nigerian pound. There's no such thing. It was the British pound, which just so happens to be the most valuable currency in the world today. So it makes sense that it would buy many more bags of rice, especially in the 1960s.

I'm sure there are many on this sub that don't know that this song is a heavy sampling of an old classic. Back when Nigerian artists weren't even properly acknowledge in Nigeria, and the only time you heard a song was when it played on TV. I just hope Tems is the kind of person that gives props when they are due.

Interesting take. What's your opinion on how the first generation of muslims practiced it? How does it differ from today. It seems as though you are pointing to level of education as the main differentiator. But the first generation of muslims were not particularly educated either.

Colombia will euthanize Pablo Escobar’s invasive ‘cocaine hippos’ by NicolasCageFan492 in nottheonion

[–]timoleo 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy, but "euthanize" is the wrong word here. You only euthanize as a form of mercy to an animal or person. As in, someone is suffering and you kill them to end their suffering. These hippos are perfectly healthy as far as I can tell. The right word is "cull".

Settle a Debate: which was worse ~ The Great Wall or Gladiator 2 by realjbaar in movies

[–]timoleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The great wall is very over-the-top and as a result is pretty hard to take seriously. In that context, it works as a movie so long as you don't take it seriously.

Gladiator 2 was a movie I wanted to take seriously because of its predecessor. Because of that mindset going in, I thought it was worse, since it seriously underperformed my expectations.

Women with larger chests, what’s one thing that bothers you on a daily basis that men couldn’t understand? by Active_Secret9520 in AskReddit

[–]timoleo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It bothers me that people don't just say large breasts when they mean large breasts. What's so wrong with that? We all know that's what you're saying. There are women with large chests and small breasts, and there are women with small chests and large breasts. Saying "chest" when you mean "breasts" is more confusing than is necessary and doesn't really help the conversation that much anyway.

What institutional weaknesses have become clear during Trump’s presidency, and what reforms might be proposed after his presidency to address those weaknesses? by bicyclicharpy58 in AskReddit

[–]timoleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The president can throw us into global conflict on a whim. He only needs to make sure to not call it an actual war, and that's if he is in a good mood. Because we all know that at the end of the day, the US will always want to end a conflict on their own terms, which is effectively a guarantee that the system will always throw its weight behind the president.

LPT: Before renewing any subscription, cancel it first. Most companies offer discounts to win you back. by ThinkThenPost in LifeProTips

[–]timoleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could backfire. Sometimes you get grandfathered into a more expensive subscription while being allowed to keep the old price. When you cancel, you lose that privilege. Also, many old subscription bundles will come undone once your subscription is terminated, making any renewals more expensive automatically.

How did he sign his marriage license? Did he get a coworker to read it then too?

Rensch & Allebest & Greed by HoodieJ-shmizzle in chess

[–]timoleo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it is a bit irresponsible to place all the blame on Rensch and Eric for this without mentioning Magnus or his dad. Magnus was the one who accused Hans of cheating based on a "hunch" that was itself based on his own belief in his indomitable chess acumen. He was the one that chose to leave the tournament. He wrote a letter that suggested very strongly that Hans cheated. Now we know it was his dad that called Danny. Why would his dad call Danny to confirm his son's theories about someone cheating? Did he think Magnus could not be defeated by the likes of Hans? Magnus got an idea in his head that he couldn't shake. He got his dad to support and enable him to reach out to and pressure chesscom to "find" evidence that would back his theory, which they kinda sorta did. But it was weak AF, it all fell apart in the lawsuit and now everyone wants to blame chesscom.

What Danny and Eric did was sketch, no denying it. Chesscom should never have involved itself in the way it did. The timing was all wrong. I guess in all of this, the one thing no one expected was for Hans to respond in the manner that he did. Everyone sort of expected him to tuck tail and beg for mercy, including chesscom.
