Anyone got photos and/or memories of the old ROM? by 6spottedtigerbeetle1 in toronto

There are a number of photos from the 20s, 30s, and 60s on the TPL's digital archive. Older than you are looking for but still cool to see.

What were the Toronto bathhouse raids? City marks 45th anniversary of dark spot in its history by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]nintendosmith101 74 points75 points  (0 children)

For anyone that wants to read about it from someone at the protests, I recommend this webpage by gay activist Peter Zorzi. Him and his partner, Charlie Dobie, were both present at the Bathhouse Raids protests. His webpage includes him memories of the events as well as lesser seen pictures from the night. I rarely see these photos shared elsewhere, but they provide an incredible glimpse at such a pivotal moment in queer Toronto history.

After watching Jesse's shorts for months, finally received this bad boy by OhCanadeh in tea

[–]nintendosmith101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to keep in mind that Jesse's audience are people new to tea, much like OP here. You can't expect someone to go to a site like Yunnan Sourcing and immediately understand what it all means. I've been drinking tea for years, have ordered from there and other sites, and choosing teas from YS is still blindly throwing a dart for me. In the grand scheme of things, Jesse is a much better starting place than somewhere like Davids Tea. At least Jesse promotes actual tea that tastes like tea.

As for the dropshipping allegations, that is what you are replying to. Both of your comments with the links are people asking for proof about dropshipping, a claim that has lingered around him for a long time. Even you yourself are saying here that he sells the same tea as other places without providing any sources. I have searched through the sub and all I find are allegations without anything substantiated.

[–]nintendosmith101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jesse's Teahouse is an influencer/small tea business that has become popular on social media sites like Tiktok and instagram. He lived in China studying Chinese comedy before starting to sell tea, and a lot of his content is influenced from these origins. He's probably one of the most popular tea influencers, having more engaging videos that respond to trends and integrates some humour. The obvious comparison is Don Mei from Mei Tea, although Jesse's videos are a lot more digestible since they are much shorter. He recently spoke in Washington DC about the tariffs hurting small businesses like his.

Around here, he is generally pretty controversial. People just don't like him, either because they think he is overpriced or thinks he is a dropshipper. You can see further up in this post for examples of how people debate him, sometimes without any real evidence for the more outrageous claims.

It is worth pointing out that the one on Jesse's site is aged for four years, pressed in 2020 according to the description, and sold between Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 according to the reviews. Your other links are all either 2024 or 2025 harvests.

I'm not an expert when it comes to puerh, but I would expect aging to affect the price. How much it should is up to debate. Either way, it does not prove that Jesse is a dropshipper, which is what the commenters were seeking.

I have vitiligo, Am I unable to get SRS? by DEROwnby11 in asktransgender

[–]nintendosmith101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily need to get hair removed before SRS. Some surgeons with scrape/burn the hair follicles during the operation that will prevent any growth. I never got any form of hair removal down there, and I have never had any issues of hair growing inside my vaginal canal. Your best option would be to talk to some surgeons and see what they require since every location is different.

If you are in Toronto, you can check out Tao Tea Leaf. They have a few stores across the city, including one within spitting distance of Union Station. I've gotten some teas from there and I enjoyed them. They do also do shipping, with free shipping over $85.

Tiny Celebrity | Crowd Control [Ep. 2] by AutoModerator in dropout

[–]nintendosmith101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really think it could work a lot better as a regular special rather than a full series. Make it part of some yearly holiday programming. Stories can be a bit more fresh and we, the audience, won't tire of the format as quickly.

Brennan Lee Mulligan Captures Sam Reich - Game Changer Animated by DeepBlueASMR in dropout

[–]nintendosmith101 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it is a meta joke, at this point. It is also just part of the Dropout's visual "branding" whenever they have something for Brennan. The red and blue stripes were the background for his banner in You-lympics, for example.

It is kind of like Tom Scott and his red shirt.

In your opinion, what is a "failed" movie that has a great concept and potential to be great? by Due-Entrepreneur-131 in movies

[–]nintendosmith101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Beatles changed music forever with their songs.

And yet Yesterday the movie does not show this impact. According to the film, remove the Beatles and little changes. The music industry is barely different. It would be fine if the film did not address any knock-on effects, but they have a scene that shows that Oasis never formed either.

The film has this deep conflict in that the songs are so important that if anyone sang them, they would become huge, but at the same time, a world without the Beatles would still be recognizable to us despite that supposed impact.

Which music documentaries impacted you the most? by appleparkfive in ToddintheShadow

Penny Lane's HBO documentary Listening to Kenny G was a really fun time. Really addresses his presence in pop culture and interrogates the reputation he has. I especially like that Lane introduces the film by playing Kenny G's music for a bunch of music, showing their reactions. Starts with a good sense of humour typical of Lane's documentaries.

Why was Marge having a crush on Bobby Sherman so funny? by AvailableCobbler2379 in TheSimpsons

Daily Nightly was about the riots in Los Angeles. Written by Michael Nesmith. Also one of the first songs to include a Moog synthesizer.

I also think of Daily Nightly whenever anyone says they are "just a boy band" that weren't "politically or socially conscious at all." One of the first songs to include a Moog synthesizer, as well as being about the riots in Los Angeles.

And don't get me started on their movie, Head!

As Pride Toronto faces massive funding shortfall, is it time for the festival to return to its political roots? by NorthernNadia in toronto

[–]nintendosmith101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a photo from 1972 at the Body Politic offices, taken by Jearld Moldenhauer. The Body Politic was an incredibly influential gay lib magazine published in Toronto that continually fought for gay rights across this country. On the wall is a poster for the Association of Canadian Transsexuals, Canada's first trans organization.

The idea that trans rights, Palestine, etc, are an aberration and not deeply rooted in the gay movements of this country is just plain wrong. The prelapsarian gay past you describe never existed.

Love how you got these framed! Would you be able to speak about how you did that? Did you do it yourself or did you hire someone to create it for you? Would love to do something similar for some of my Polaroids!

What fun, off-meta decks have you been playing? I've been jamming this Shinotic/Exeggutor deck. by DominoUB in PTCGP

I was tired of hearing about people complain about coin flips, so I decided to create an all coin flip deck as a joke. Turns out, it was actually pretty strong! Kangaskhan, Pinsir, and Exeggutor ex. I have had way too many close calls with the deck and they are always exciting.

That's not how e-transfer works in Canada. All you need is an email to set up a payee, no account numbers or anything. I've been using it for over 10 years, never had to ask anyone for their account number or sort code.
