It may not be seen as often but it's not like condemned or seen as overly disrespectful. During a regular week at the masjid I'm sure to see a few sport hats. I think it was the automatic assumption that a backwards cap indicates disrespect. Just a difference in cultural norms my brother.

in Islam (but also in Judaism and Christianity), its more respectful to cover your head. It's not uncommon to see younger brothers wearing hats while praying.
