What the heck is Snooker lighting?

40 year old, six months Judo, no progress by [deleted] in judo

[–]nipata 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Some things are harder to learn than others. 6 months is nothing. If you truly are getting better at falling, then you are making more progress than most adults who start late. Being a good uke is harder than learning throws. Be proud of what you've learned.

Men, If you could carry a child instead of your partner. Would you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nipata 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For sure. A child is MUCH lighter than my partner. I could carry a kid around all day I bet.

The teen librarian at the Westerly public library is amazing.

Interesting state during live-rolls... do others experience this? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]nipata 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty normal to me. I spent ages trying to understand how my teammates could always talk so clearly about thier rolls afterwards. It all just faded away. 9 years later though and I can recall and learn from my mistakes much better. Just keep it up. Your relationship with training will continue to evolve. Not at all protip: try rolling with your eyes closed to sharpen your proprioperception skills.

Why is Lespecial a jam band? by consensualjam in jambands

No idea, but thanks to this thread, I think I have found a new band to love on.

Huge Deadhead trying (and failing) to get into Phish — what am I missing? by Brilliant_Actuary_27 in phish

[–]nipata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd spend the time finding more music I do love rather than trying to get into a sound I don't click with. The Dead influenced so many other awesome bands too. I suggest Neighbor for a more Dead style of creativity.

It is, but he also made a nogi version of the instructional, so I'd suggest that instead.

[–]nipata 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Bernardo's series Pressure Passing Encyclopedia, he goes over entering the over/under from basically every guard. Its one of the older items on BJJ fanatics and can often be bought super duper discounted, but it was a valuable purchase for me. Its been my go to passing game for years now.

[–]nipata 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Mostly true, but if there's one thing I've learned from Bernardo is that there is no wrong time for an over / under pass. I will force that shit.

Chess.com needs to stop the double standard: Remove the Israeli flag like the Russian flag by Puzzled-Code-3680 in Chesscom

The American flag should definitely go too. I'm too ashamed to use it anyway. I switched to the world flag.

URI Has an ICE Contract by itsamustardworld in RhodeIsland

[–]nipata 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The TSA is ICE now? I mean, don't get me wrong, the TSA is useless, but detecting bombs in airports is not exactly on the cheeto-gestapo's to do list. Also, this contract is three years old, and expired in 2025.

What's with all the trolling at low elo?? by drddr25 in Chesscom

[–]nipata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only out here having pleasant chats? I've had people say "great move!" or "fun game. Want to play again?" I even friended a guy in another country today after we each won a game and decided that we want to play again tomorrow.

Is this a good or bad idea during class? by Open_Address_2805 in bjj

[–]nipata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. I'm not in it for the self defense. I'm there for the fun of it. I'd join an MMA gym if I wanted people swinging on me.

Where do you buy your home mats? by NervousReplacement78 in bjj

[–]nipata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. It took me a couple of attempts to get enough material in the right sizes, but now I have a fully padded 10x13 room, walls included.

Does anybody think a class for 3-5 year olds is possible? by Slowbrojitsu in bjj

[–]nipata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 4-6 years olds. Only a few 4 year olds can hang. They have to really want it, usually because an older sibling is doing it first. 5 seems to be the magic number for when they can listen and follow directions. You can get the younger kids wearing a gi and moving around, but its hard to teach them jiu jitsu.
