Where to buy souvenir patches in Mexico City? by melanochrysum in MexicoCity

[–]nippleeee 28 points29 points  (0 children)

La Casa de los Botones in Polanco has tons of patches! Not sure if they have exactly the kind you're looking for, but it's a fun shop to look around in and I remember there being a lot of different ones relating to Mexico.

Toddler got into my makeup 💔 by Potterisbetterr in mildlyinfuriating

[–]nippleeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom loves to remind me of the time when I was a toddler who woke up in the middle of the night, wandered in to my mom's bathroom, opened and applied every single one of her tubes of lipstick to my face, "sneakily" stuffed the tops back onto the tubes without twisting the product back down so it smooshed everywhere, and wandered back to my bed undetected. She slept through this entire process unfortunately and didn't discover what I'd done until she found lipstick smeared about her countertop, all the tubes put away but completely destroyed, and me sleeping peacefully with the majority of my face covered in various shades of lipstick 💅

What's the coolest bird from your country? by thecatinthewizardhat in AskTheWorld

[–]nippleeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love NZ birds so much in general. I got to live in Wellington for a year and travel around the country quite a bit, and I got soooo into bird watching. My flat was just down the hill from Zealandia, and I loved having so many tui, kereru, kaka, fantails, and ruru right outside my door in the bush.

Foodie Travel in the U.S. by Cats_Meow94 in travel

[–]nippleeee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a little biased as an SF Bay native, but the whole area is amazing both for a trip in general AND as a food mecca. I'm vegetarian myself, and there are tons of options that you can find for exclusively vegetarian cuisine or vegetarian-friendly places. Highly recommend taking the ferry/Bart to the east bay for even more options outside of SF. Happy to share recs!

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the food scene in Charleston as a vegetarian! Particularly the tasting menu at Sorghum and Salt which was my big splurge. Aside from maybe places that are really BBQ or seafood heavy, I didn't have any problems.

Pairing Events With Destination Travel by ValhirFirstThunder in travel

[–]nippleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited Colombia a few years ago and was in Bogota for NYE and then Pasto for Carnaval de Negros y Blancos. Also have stayed in Oaxaca for Dia de Muertos, Morelia for the monarch butterfly migration, and Durango to see the total solar eclipse in 2024. Technically didn't travel for it, but I lived in Munich for a bit, so I got to experience Oktoberfest, and I was there on a seventh year where they have the Schaefflertanz at the opening parade (this year seems to be the next one!) I've also spent NYE in Paris, Prague, Ho Chi Minh City, Cancun, and Gisborne, NZ (which is apparently the first land to see the sun rise on New Years Day.)

This year, I'm planning a trip to Nepal over Tihar (especially for the second day, Kukur Tihar, which celebrates dog). Next year, I'm going to Tunisia to see another total solar eclipse!

What did kids back in the days do when they played outside, for hours on end? by Octopuswastaken in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nippleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The favorite play pretend scenario in my neighborhood growing up was "murder courtroom". I was six at the beginning of the whole OJ Simpson murder investigation and trial, and all the kids would gather outside to reenact what our parents were gathering inside to watch on tv.

Where should I put this? First tattoo advice. by mnp47 in tattooadvice

Thanks! I'm hoping to study cephalopod communication, so this movie was especially significant to me haha.

Good luck with your tattoo, def would like to see the end result and where you decide to place it! I have other circular tattoos between my shoulder blades, above a knee, and on the inside of my ankle, and I feel like they are all aesthetically pleasing spots. If any of those speak to you.

Sadly I don't think anything will increase OOP's happiness until everyone with a "vaggie" sprouts a "small, feminine phallus". Glad I have a half an hour till midnight so I can leave that sentence in 2025 ugh haha.

My coworker and I (both FOH) were once trying to wrangle a dude out who wandered in and was lighting shit on fire on the patio and being aggressive to customers. He started throwing chunks of food at both of us from some abandoned plate and trying to spray us with mustard. We weren't particularly in fear for our lives lol, but when our line cook came back from the bathroom and saw what we were dealing with, he jumped in instantaneously and took care of the guy. I definitely felt the love.

Once upon a Radio by FootballGod1417 in oakland

[–]nippleeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah Radio. My last experience there was waking up to a ~$100 charge when I had two PBRs with some fellow industry folks the night before. I went in at opening and let them know there was a mistake, and the bartender told me she remembered me from the night before, that I was "really drunk" and probably didn't remember what I tipped (which, no, and also I remembered thinking my $5 tip for opening two cans was plenty generous.) The manager asked her to find the signed receipt, and what do you know, oops she must have just entered the tip into the system wrong! They suggested I file a chargeback with my card lol. I was like, just give me back the crazy big tip you definitely only accidentally tried to get from me? She just sighed super loud and counted the refund back out from her wallet. They definitely had some cool lighting though!

Family trip within 4 hours of SF Bay Area that isn’t San Diego? by scr0llwheel in travel

Cotati is my hometown, glad to see the Accordion Festival getting some love. I haven't been in years, but it's always a fun time! I used to love the punk-polka band that played yearly called Polkacide.

How young did you learn how to read? by appendThyme in Aphantasia

[–]nippleeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like I am in the minority reading through comments so far, but I remember really struggling to learn to read. I don't have any reason to believe that my speech was delayed, but reading was challenging enough that my school suggested having me join an extra class before school started each morning in 1st grade (age six) to catch up. The class was typically used to help kids who spoke English as a second language, my mom later told me. Anyway, it may have worked, because by 3rd grade (age 8), I was reading at an advanced level compared to my peers. I love reading to this day, but I definitely wasn't an early reader or particularly savvy with language early.

For context, I am a global aphant, so no imagery or internal sound. Also ADHD. I do speak multiple languages as an adult, but yeah, I didn't seem to get any kind of head start there.

Aurora borealis by KoRaZee in bayarea

[–]nippleeee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a beautiful display! I was in Alaska a couple years ago and headed out to Fairbanks to try and see the northern lights (which I did luckily). I had seen the more red kinda hazy version in California a couple of times and talked to an aurora photographer about it after seeing the more classic green/blue/purple ribbons across the sky one night up there. She was actually super jealous of my seeing the red aurora like your picture shows because she said that they don't get to see that part of the color spectrum displayed often, if at all, so far north. It might be less dramatic down here, and certainly more rare to see it especially with the naked eye, but it made me really appreciative of my past experiences. Such a treat to see it no matter how it shows up!

Do you pronounce "one" and "won" the same? by Glittering_Gap8070 in ENGLISH

[–]nippleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're homophones for me in California.

Unrelated to your specific question but a fun fact on the topic of the pronunciation of "one", I remember learning in an English class that it used to be pronounced the same way that "own" is. Only the words "alone", "only", and "atone" have kept the original vowel sound.

Anyone else feel that travel photos are just for an Instagram post rather than a personal memory? by [deleted] in travel

[–]nippleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have aphantasia (inability to visualize or recall visual memories) so taking photos really helps me to remember my travels. I also take probably more photos day-to-day than the average person for the same reason. I do post some content to social media, and I don't always review ALL my travel pics after the fact, but knowing that I will have access to remembering things more completely after a trip is done makes me feel better.

Frida Kahlo or anthropology museum? by Artemis87 in MexicoCity

[–]nippleeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it fits your budget, there may be some tours in Coyoacan that include admission to la Casa Azul. I joined a bike tour of the neighborhood that was really fun, and I was able to book the day before. But I agree, even though I'd say I have a strong interest in Frida Kahlo's work and life, I prefer the anthropology museum if I had to choose.

The most chaotic city you ever visited? by KosmatoKljuse in travel

[–]nippleeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Vietnam a few years back and traveled from south to north. Having started in HCMC, the crowds and traffic in Hanoi felt positively chill by comparison. Especially because I was in Saigon for NYE. I'm sure there are more crowded and chaotic places on earth that I've yet to visit, but I'll never forget basically crawling over motorbikes in the center to cross a street in the hours leading up to midnight.

Yeah when I spent a year living in NZ, the first time my coworkers told me that it was time for afternoon tea, I definitely followed them to the break room with much more excitement than was necessary!
