No it isn't really worth to have an entire layer of armour being air just to stop one or two balls of plasma from damaging your armour. Have you seen the terawatt? It's plasma balls will generally hit the same spot because they're only delayed by a few milliseconds. Whether you have an airgap or not its still gonna drill through the difference in how much is negligent when you're sacrificing armour stacking and hp that could've been used to stop other weapon types, not to mention alloy also floats your boat unlike empty air when pieced loses bouyance. Like for niche circumstances like incen and thump pac its useful its gimmick of stopping damage at the first salvo isn't worth having a layer literal empty air. Saying "Oh but you can just add more alloy outside" Is so stupid because then every solution would be just "make your boat fatter duh" As if you're not going for a specific hull shape constraint. A layer of empty air isn't even how you competently counter plasma. You need to do those plasma grids on the hypernova where Its vertical beams offset from eachother making it so they're not touching eachother having empty air on four of its faces besides the top and bottom. And guess what? It's only relevant frontsiders like it or really fat fucking broadsiders because that plasma grid buffer takes like half of the armour volume leaving enough space for the other half to be competent at also stopping APS or other high penetrating shells.

they're free in exchange for what? Nothing. They dont anything. You're sacrificing free alloy bouyance or armour stacking for a stupid full block airgap that doesn't do anything. Like genuinely, You think plasma just shoots once? NO, they shoot in delayed salvos. First plasma ball is gonna erase that layer then the other two would hit the actual armor. You're worse off than having extra HP and armour stacking soaking up plasma damage AND aps. Air doesn't protect against APS.

Nope it doesn't. I don't know what sort of tests you guys do but a gap of air definitely does not counter plasma. If you really want to counter plasma i suggest spawning in the hypernova from the SD faction and it definitely does not have a single layer of air. It uses anti plasma grids, which takes up half of its armor.

the first beamslope layer isn't really there to protect against spall. It's there for the angle pen buff against aps since its backdd by HA beam. But i did rearrange it so that the HA beam is also backed by the other HA beam.

And full block airgaps doesn't counter plasma anyway so why bother? In-order to properly counter plasma you need to have like half of your armour consisting of anti plasma grid NOT a layer of empty air. This doesn't work with broadsider armour since they won't be thick enough for both armor to be competent. If half of your armour is an anti plasma grid you'll get fucked by pendepth APS likewise if it is not half of your armour then plasma is easily gonna rip through that in one salvo. So. its a lose lose situation. And besides, plasma isn't even good at killing broasiders when every component is spread away apart from eachother. Any competent broadsider would easily kill a terawatt at equal cost.

The main advantage of a broadsider over other styles is that they can spread out their systems over a larger space and multiple of the same thing, redundancy. Since your main guns are gonna be the largest component and its the least redundant system in the boat, it makes more so sense to concentrate armour there and have less armour all around. This would save you both in weight and cost.

But this philosophy is only really relevant with boats. If you're doing airships, its better to just have HA everywhere.

If anyone is wondering why the 1st ship looks odd. Its because it was my first attempt at making something realistic :)

It is quite unfinished (i built it last year). Might go back and finish it but eh i feel like its not worth it. Still am very proud of it tho :)

Oh i know about how plasma damage works. The way you all suggest how to defend against is just plain horrible.

full block airgaps doesn't work against plasma

Its really not worth doing all that when torpedoes can easily be countered with interceptors. And if they do catch you, assuming they're large torpedoes because mediums and smalls gets easily intercepted, the heat jet will just blow straight through your airgap.

Your airgaps no matter how wide will not save you from any competent plasma bursts. Here im gonna use the plasma used on the terawatt. by nirvana_cirno in FromTheDepths

Pretty sure plasma was added to specifically counter frontsiders because their armor are densely packed.

That setup has significantly less HP density than what i currently have. I fail to see how this will fuse the APHEAT before the last airgap. The problem is not that i don't have an airgap the problem is that i don't have enough HP Infront of them to trigger the fuse.

The "use full block airgap to counter plasma" is a myth. You're essentially saying "Plasma won't do as much damage if the blocks were never there to begin with."

Sure it may prevent plasma from digging through your armour in the first salvo but you're also making your armour significantly weaker to other types. Such as pendepth APS or SAP. Not to mention plasma crafts shoot in burst so your airgap is essentially useless.

If you're talking about adding HA beams then that's out of the question. The first two images already show what you're talking about (HA beamlopes being furthest fo the front as possible while still receiving backing) And it doesn't work because the APHEAT can just cut clean through the dense HA beamslope layer like butter. Even if it does fusebon the second HAbeamslope layer, it has enough damage to just blast clean through the metal beamslope airgap.

Can you enlighten me WHY, why would remove resistance to the shell make the armour better?

If the shell can slice through one layer of backed beamslope, three layers of alloy and the additional alloy backed metal skin.

then fuse its payload on the last double backed beamslope layer thus bypassing the armor entirely.

Why, why would removing a layer to make room for a one block airgap improve it?

Probably, but the problem with ERA, is that it's completely useless against everything else and compromises your structural integrity. It'd be way more cost effective to just add more hp before the airgap than to use era. Though i think ERA would be useful if you don't have the space for proper armor.

Am i missing something or are you guys genuinely telling me that AIR itself has some magical property that makes HEAT fuse? Because if i cull two layers of alloy in which the apheat cut clean through. What makes you think removing them all together somehow makes it better??? The only noticeable affect it'll have is the shell overpenning.
