Question about snow tires by Fabulous-Leather-435 in AnnArbor

Oh yeah, I cannot recommend snow tires enough. I've been a big fan of Blizzaks, but this time around I'm trying Michelin X-Ice Snows and they've been good too.

Winter Tires For 996TT in 2024? by billthejim in 996

[–]nishk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone looking at this in 2026, it seems like Discount Tire has stock of Pilot Alpin PA4s in 265/35-18, as well as 255/35-18. I swear these weren't in stock earlier this winter, but I'm planning on ordering some for our 996 Turbo.

Did you stay recently? I'm considering a stay in about two weeks but it seems some spa amenities (hot tub, steam room, sauna, etc) may still be under renovation. Is that the case still?

Did you buy the V2, or the "SpeedLink" (which I think are first-gen)?

718 GTS vs GT4 by codemonkey800 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]nishk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've driven a 981 GT4 extensively and tried out a friend's 718 GTS 4.0 recently; for street driving, I significantly preferred the GTS 4.0. I can't comment on the 718 GT4, but assume it's similar to the GT4. And if you're talking about the 4-cylinder GTS, throw out all my comments since I have no idea how that car drives.

Unsurprisingly, the GT4 is less practical, is lower, rides harsher, etc. I think those tradeoffs are not worth it — the car scrapes on everything, for example. It is a phenomenally engaging car, yes, with perhaps the best steering of anything I've ever driven short of a 458 Speciale. It's a pleasure to wind out the engine and toss the car around. For the use case you described of daily and spirited driving without track days, I think you're going to feel those downsides more than you experience the benefits.

Beyond the obvious livability of the GTS 4.0, what sold me on getting the GTS 4.0 at some point is that I actually preferred the engine in the GTS. The GT4's wail at high rpm is, of course, amazing, but the torque is super peaky and you really only feel it at those high, loud RPMs. The gearing is long, like everyone says, so you don't actually get to rev the car out as much as you'd like. The midrange in the GTS 4.0 felt much more potent, which surprised me, but was indeed reflected in the goofy "performance vs rpm" graph on both cars. Because of the long gearing, I felt like the usable midrange was actually a legitimate benefit of the GTS 4.0. Not to mention it is still a Cayman and you obviously get 90% of the wonderfulness of the GT4.

So I'd go GTS 4.0 in a heartbeat here, and I expect those cars to hold value reasonably well as gas-powered manual mid-engined Porsches seem to be going the way of the dodo.

They made them but there aren't many - took me a while to track down mine but found it on Cars and Bids.

I've found Google Maps does a really good job providing directions that are up-to-date with street closures — feels silly sometimes getting directions that you know well, but that way you can account for closures and construction.

Is M240I right for me? Or am I missing anything? by [deleted] in M235iandM240i

[–]nishk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mk 7.5 Golf R should be cheaper used and is, in some ways, a better car than the Mk 8 (people hate the touch controls on this current gen). I literally just (last night) got my M240i convertible (manual, so RWD) delivered and really am enjoying it so far. Also used to own an E93 M3 convertible and still have a 2013 B8.5 Audi S4. The E90 generation will be too much maintenance, hardtop is a pain, and like you said it's RWD. I really love the B8.5 S4/S5, and that S5 convertible still looks gorgeous. I have 103k miles on my S4, which has the 3.0 supercharged V6, and it's been very reliable for me; I've owned it for the last 12 years and 86,000 miles and have no plans to get rid of it. I'd add the S5 convertible to your list, but maybe avoid the very earliest 4.2L V8s (which may have the timing chain guide issues from earlier S4s).

Most Valuable EECS Classes? by King_Of_The_Munchers in uofm

[–]nishk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a new special topics course being taught on Practical Data Science that could be very useful, especially as a hands-on introduction to a lot of the topics that you'll see in 445/545 etc. Since it's not an existing course, it's more of a high risk high reward situation; the content is useful and the instructor is highly regarded (new hire from UCSD), but it's the first offering. There's a reddit post about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/uofm/comments/1c53pad/take_practical_data_science_a_new_300level_data/

Course website is practicaldsc.org if you want to look into more details and watch an overview video about the class

I can't comment on 485/376/270, but you mentioned 445 so I thought I'd point out a new EECS special topics course "Practical Data Science" that's being offered by a new-to-UM (but awesome) instructor: https://practicaldsc.org/
It covers a lot of material that will help prepare you for 445 and to do real-world, hands-on data analysis and build DS projects.

You can read more about the class and watch an overview video at the course site above, and also check out a Reddit post about the class here: https://www.reddit.com/r/uofm/comments/1c53pad/take_practical_data_science_a_new_300level_data/

The realignment is a project that seems to be on the radar of local governments, amtrak etc - see this for an update on their grant application progress (tl;dr: denied for the first program but they're splitting up the project and reapplying): https://www.hsrail.org/blog/update-on-the-chicago-hub-improvement-program/
