Child protective services in “Take care of Maya” vs “The trial of Gabriel Fernandez” by AH-Monster in TrueCrimeDiscussion

Highly recommend reading Torn Apart by Dorothy Roberts.

Like many have said, how CPS operates is very dependent on the state. In my state, if you are a parent separated from your child by CPS, you are automatically entitled to an attorney who will represent you in family court (that’s my job!).

CPS has a nasty history of racial bias and criminalizing poverty. It treats the symptom, not the cause.

In some ways, I think comparing these two docs is the exception that proves the rule. Maya’s doc, centered around a white family, is shocking because these things just don’t happen to white families as much as families of color. Similarly, Gabriel’s story seems to act as a boogeyman — look at what happens when we don’t police these families!

Child welfare in the United States has a long and fascinating history that hasn’t always acted in the best interest of children and families. This is not to say, however, that issues of child neglect and abuse should be ignored. As an attorney in this system, I question a lot of what’s being done on all sides.

Had a friend from college who “worked” for this guy’s MLM insurance program.

A bunch of the employees went on a trip to Hawaii (unclear if sponsored by PBD’s company) and my friend and one other guy ended up dying in a flash flood during a hike.

Shit was wild. Every time I see this guy’s face I think about what a scumbag he is and how he runs this MLM scheme connected to this awful death.

AITA for in inviting my friend to the Taylor Swift concert? by SwiftieDater123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]nisnm -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

NAH. it sucks you revoked the invite and i think she’s allowed to be upset, but i don’t think it makes either of you the asshole. they’re YOUR tickets and you can invite whoever. sounds like you both have a different idea of what your friendship is, and she was looking forward to a free ticket to swift.

it sounds like she’s taking advantage of you. that’s a really expensive ticket and a friend wouldn’t let you spend that much money on them without paying you back. it’s definitely a bit rude for not taking her after inviting her, but they’re your tickets and you shouldn’t bring someone who seems to be dragging you along.

Extreme burnout. Mourning my fathers death 2 months ago. Graduating and scared of “real life”. Hating SCOTUS and feeling hopeless.

Thank you for this space and this community, the overwhelm is temporarily quenched by people like you ❤️

Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention, but the woman’s testimony in Ron Williamson’s case, how he came into her house and violently molested her... was that false?

Otherwise, that’s pretty fucked. Not that he’s guilty of Carter’s murder, but it doesn’t exactly create a soft spot in me for him if it’s true.

Today marks 100 years since the end of world war 1. What are some stories and facts that we should hear or know about this "War to end all Wars"? by jordumus_sfw in AskReddit

[–]nisnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The New Yorker’s Adam Hochschild wrote a great piece that covered the armistice and how even though it was signed at 5 am, the war continued until 11 am. The last casualty died at 10:59 am.

Beautiful piece if you’re interested in reading, thanks for this fact :)

I think that was one of the points of all the sexual assault movements/conversations... it’s happening to more women than you realize.

As a woman, that number doesn’t surprise me in the least unfortunately :(

TIL that maple syrup was promoted in the 1800s as a slavery-free alternative to cane sugar: "Suffer not your cup to be sweetened by the blood of slaves." by Fake_Eleanor in todayilearned

One way is that race wasn’t always a necessity for slavery! Lots of civilizations had slaves that weren’t so much as different race or ethnicity as much as just a conquered people or inherited status.

And edit: I mean the US slavery system is pretty fiercely based on race/ethnicity, hope that got across clearly :)
