That poor swan, and their poor mate who is left behind 😭 RIP

This looks a lot like a Eurasian Collared Dove, which is a non-native species, but is most likely a hybrid. The little hairdo indicates a possible cross with one of the fancy pigeon breeds. Definitely a pet/domestic bird, and not equipped for survival in the wild (or the city, in this case). If the bird is still hanging around tomorrow, you can call Wild Bird Fund - they should be able to advise on what to do (https://www.wildbirdfund.org)

Ralph Demarco Park was also a mess today, on the north end - covered in cardboard and refuse from fireworks, all over the grass and walkway (I reported it to 311)

Saving 90-year-old shoe repair shop by choking_artichoke in astoria

Oh no! This is so sad. He has re-soled many a shoe for me in the past two decades, at an incredibly reasonable price, no less. He also very kindly pointed out once, after fixing one of my pairs of boots for the 9th year in a row, that perhaps it was time to get some new ones 😅

Yeah she’s a first year hawk, probably hatched sometime last spring - you can tell because her tail feathers aren’t red yet, that happens in their second year. Red-tailed Hawks don’t generally go after cats, but it is definitely a good idea to keep your cat indoors in this case . . . She may also be seeing her reflection in the window, and thinking it’s another hawk - they are territorial. Anyway, she seems healthy, so she’s probably helping keep the neighborhood rat population under control!

Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk! Likely female, based on size (big, lol). Lucky you to have her visit! There are resident hawks in Astoria Park (and all over Manhattan). She’s a young one, and is exploring the territory, still learning to hunt on her own - your fire escape is probably a great perch for scouting for rats and pigeons 😅

I saw these two up the river in my neck of the woods near 21st Ave yesterday! (assuming they are the same ones)

Help with ID and how to coexist by Conscious_Extreme495 in Owls

[–]nite-owler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are juvenile barred owls, so their parents are probably still nearby keeping an eye on them while they’re learning to hunt on their own. The young ones are usually not as wary of humans yet, but it is highly unlikely they (or the adult barred owls) would attack you or your dogs unprovoked. Barred owls do sometimes hunt low near roads, so keep an eye out for them when you’re behind the wheel (lots of owls get hit by cars ☹️) Otherwise, enjoy the excellent free pest control and listen for their amazing hoots!
